I read about this at the bookstore yesterday and wanted to see if it was up on here. I cannot believe Disney did this, and that the word "vagina" was used.
Okay my great grammy died in June and so they were cleaning out her books and they found a book from 1950 and gave it to me and said you'll need the soonest I was like -.- ~kill me~
this video should come on tv instead of those sexist bullshit pill commercials for menstrual women. just eat healthy, excersize and basically do EVERYTHING the video said. Even the foods, I became a vegetarian and guess what? my period shortened to 3 days, ZERO cramps, ZERO mood swings and its almost as if it isnt there, at times i'll completely forget about it :) this video made my day. this is what preteen girls SHOULD see.
Someone please explain to me how this is sexist. this was made in the1940's. In the 1940's, women still believed that you could not leave your house when you were menstruating, some believed you couldn't cook when you were menstruating, and people still believed that showering on your period meant a very painful adulthood filled with fibroids and migraines. They saw menstruation as a curse and a sickness back then. They NEEDED an accurate video like this.
@marler3 whoever thinks this video is sexist hasnt watched TV lately, and may have a brain tumor. this is not only dated and fitting to the time period (no pun intended), but it is extremely helpful and enlightening. it does not sell you pills or medications to ease dismenorrhea.
funny as hell, mainly due to the sexism inherent in it. For instance I learned that the stages of life for a women are 1) playing with blocks, 2) Dolls, 3)Books, 4)Marriage, 5)Having Children.
@TheKittyWonder Well, it's not sexist, because they had to appeal to the general audience. It's not like you could be like "Alright girls, everything you've ever been told is a lie, now play some action figures and I'll teach ya all about periods" no, you have to put it in terms that people during a certain time can understand. For example: today, you have to use rap music in order to get kids to listen to anything you tell them
Once I saw the part about how you may be a little down, but try to keep your mood up, because other people have to live with you, it became obvious that this was written by a man.
Don't feel sorry for yourself, you have to live with other people. After all, it's only an occasional twinge. Come, now. You can do almost anything you normally do!
@ThePianoPlayer93 Well, I have to say it was a nice idea at the time, but of course there are some opinions in that movie short that is kinda old-fashioned today.
The writing is actually excellent, from the first word to the last. It's really "mission accomplished" and timely guidance for young people who may have been harboring private worries and fears. Bravo to Disney, and its fine narrator, too.
Considering the era, this is really pretty good. These days we might think it didn't go far enough, but back then it was an unthinkable topic, and movies like these were the very first attempts to educate women away from the superstitions and negative connotations the topic held at the time.
Love the ablist "You'll just have to live with it!" addressed to people who experience spikes in anxiety and depression during menstruation. I also love the complete glossing over of fertilization: they just say "if it's fertilized," rather than saying HOW it gets fertilized. I'm not even talking about discussion of sex; I'm talking about discussion of "pregnancy happens when the egg is fertilized by a sperm cell and then implants in the uterine lining." Important info for a kid to know.
Wait only one egg passes during each period? A week of bleeding, cramps, and misery for that? This is actually a very factual and well done video especially for the 1940s! I'm glad it has none of those graphic or disturbing images.
btdubs mine sometimes lasts 10 days, not 3-7. "No matter how bad you feel you have to live with people." Hahaha
I was told by my mother that it was a curse and a plague that all women must suffer because the universe hates us. Once a month your own body betrays you and you feel like you've just been punched from the inside, but there's no sense in crying about it because it's going to be stuck with you for about 40+ years and if you think that's bad try going through labour. You'll be a terribly moody person, you're face will break out and just when you think it's over BAM! heavy rapid flow.
For some reason, I have a really hard time believing that this exists. I can't see Walt Disney creating something like this lol. Although, maybe he made it for his daughter
@SinnFein4ever I think it's for our own good. Without it, some of us beautiful young women may get too proud of ourselves. :) And a monthly cleansing of our blood system isn't a bad idea.
I'd rather avoid it by taking the pill every day, or getting the Norplant implant (a little tube for birth-control they implant in your upper-arm, that lasts for 5 years.).
Both cute and informative, very funny as well. I laughed when she said always looking good is important because you'll feel good too. Haha sounds like something my grandma would say to me :)
this is so much better than the shit they showed us in 5th grade. surpisingly good. and they avoid the subject of sex but totally hint at it at 7:48.
@noodlestrudeldoodle recycling the lining of the uterus is much more energy-efficient than maintaining ovulation all month. some animals' uteri are more diligent recyclers than humans: women still have to lose some essential iron in the process every time.
