Great morality movie, which you rarely see these days. The ditsy little girl of fluff you dismiss turns out to be the strongest character due to her strong moral center.Tyrone was great and courageous for tackling this unusual against type role. Anyway, Americans love films like this where there is final redemption but this one didn't do that well at the box; I guess it was just a little too much to see a big star like Power in such a mess.
@SatchmoSings I do not think wanting redemption is particularly American or any other country since I do not think any one person can speak for the entire population of a nation. I do think that most people want their hero or main character to have some redeeming quality or in the general pattern of a story they will be a villain if too negative a personality. So, thus, you are right. Tyrone was too much a clean hero to be accepted in this role. That is why I feel he was very courageous to try.

He made a mockery of God (in his wife's eyes), and he fell hard ... but the one pure thing in his life was his love for her, and her love for him. At the end he became like the man he mistakenly poisoned. A tragic tale. I recalled seeing this as a kid, over 30 years ago and it left a deep impression on me.
