This was the end of an era, toys were made to last and do what they claimed. My poor kids dont have shit to get thats worth a damn. Thanks for ,the post
Kids get the shaft from safety regulations today....these things were RAD. getting a bruise in the ankle or hit in the face and not crying earned serious respect on the playground.
When America still made toys and the chinesse were still living in the 12th century playing with sticks and plowing fields with oxen. Thanks to the traitors in the U.S they gave china everything they know including knowledge to make toys.
odd how something that cost five bucks then could keep a kid occupied for months ripping the thing down the sidewalks, driveways, thru obstacles yet today game system cost 400 then it neds a game 40 bucks, then kid wants to go online with it another 20 and maybe kids occupied half a week
@gamecheater11 Its cause the current decade has no creativity or originality and thus no style of its own so it has to steal styles from other decades.
@DailyBrusher I can relate - kids, especially boys, are weird! My friends and I used to put mice in those gasoline powered COX radio-controlled airplanes and kept records of how many flights they had each flown - until my friend crashed one into a tree and killed two of them. :( After that we stopped doing it. We felt so badly for our little friends as we'd never figured that any of them would ever die.
SSP Racers were distributed by Toltoys in Australia. I had the CanAm Racer and the Ski Baller (something like a cross between a snowmobile and a dragster). Some kids at my school used to hold SSP rallies, the finale of which was to jump a Smash-Up Derby car over as many kids as could lie side by side. Those were the days.
When I was 5 in 1971, the Citgo gas stations sold 6" SSP Laker specials and CanAms. I had a blue Laker Special from this promotion. I was the coolest GIRL in kindergarten when I went to school w/ this baby. All the annoying little boys wanted to be my friend, HA!
very cool i was 6 when this commercial was on and still have black jack, too much and even stole my 2 brothers ones long forgotten in the attic... Laker special ect..... anyone remember the TTPs? Only the original Verti Bird could beat these toys... SSPs Ruled
I always wanted one of these, but never got one. That's okay, I can still remember the ads, and how they were so cool looking! I used a centrifugal motor to build one up from scratch, but it wasn't the same. I also built a gravity engine, and only now there becoming known.
I used 2 inch dia. thin wall copper half-turn pipes. Each with a locking collar on one end and threads on the other. Fill 5/8 with water. Swirl it and toss into the air. The pipe will "gravity float" for a moment B4 dropping!
I had the green dragster type. I remember seeing the commercials and really wanting one. And somehow, my parents got it for me. We had a driveway that was at like a 45 degree angle, so we got lots of speed. I think sunny days, bright concrete driveway, and winding them up with the rigid pullcord with the teeth. Man, those commercials would stick with you and your friends and it became the reason for your day. Am I gonna get it? How can we all get our parents to buy us one? It seemed so important
I nearly screamed like a girl at work when I saw this commercial. OMG, I so remember these cars. I grew up in Cincinnati, Ohio and I remember the Kenner Toy Company when it was located downtown. It has the coolest artwork on the side of the building. Thanks a million for this one!
@honeycone71 I grew up in the N. Ky area. My friends Mom worked there and she brought home a grocery bag full of those. It was the models that the salespeople used . Great Times. Needless to say, his driveway was the hot spot to play at.

Probably my favorite toy from childhood! I got in a LOT of trouble, around '72, when I put the family goldfish in the car to drive it!
