@shymermaid1 my opinion: Field of Barley represents high summer. In relationship terms, when life is good. Within Celtic ethos barley represent "wealth" in many ways and is also a strong image. It seems to me this is an arc from youth through age. In the early verses its about them lying in the fields of gold, in the late verses it's about children playing (another generation). The critical verse is: " I never made promises lightly" - life isn't perfect, but can be good. Very dense lyrics

I remember a friend playing Eva Cassidy's version once and I was like "I prefer the original version" and she said "This IS the original version". I tried to tell her Sting wrote it and she was like "Who's Sting?" and she wouldn't believe that Cassidy's version wasn't the original. Needless to say, I was disgusted. Not only is this MOST DEFINITELY the original, but it is also MOST CERTAINLY the best! People these days have no musical education!
