@ Boseconsultants. Yeah i totally know what you mean. For example I put a permanenet fix on the safety lock so it doesen't engage by accident. However I never had a problem with the noisy lock release. As for the durability, I still cut kables and crack open my beer bottles. Hehe. Consealment was my primary choice.
I normally agree completely with Nutnfancy, but not in this case. The Sog Flash 1 feels fragile and unsubstantial in the hand - I can best describe it as feeling like a toy in one's hand. It is difficult to open confidently and I feel like it will come out of my hand at any moment. Very little traction via the zytel. The spyderco dragonfly is a much better (albeit more expensive) choice.
That's a killer little knife! My primary EDC. The pocket clip works miracles when you're wearing a suit and tie. Just pop it into your shirt pocket and it looks like a ballpoint pen.
@SmartEmployee This use is unique and your perspective is well taken. Indeed, the knife completely settles into the pocket. However, I simply can't get over how flimsy this knife feels in the hand. And the damn rattling from the lock release in closed position just drives me mad.
Just got one for Xmas from my dad...love it! It now sits amongst my growing collection (Kershaw skyline, Spyderco Delica 4 FFG and my prized posession Benchmade Triage 915 orange variety). Next purchase Ontario Rat 7. Nutn, you are killing me with all these backpacking, gun and knife reviews! BTW, it's interesting to see how much you have grown in your reviews over the years.
Nutnfancy..love your channel and respect your expertise! Is there any way that you could do a knife review on the SOG SAN MAI STEEL "VULCAN" KNIFE. I have the sog flash II based on your review but want to upgrade to the sog VULCAN but want to know is this a viable edc knife. Thanks!!...respectfully..
Hi Nutn. Finally after nearly two years. Two months ago I bought a used Sog Flash 1 . From this time it is in my front pocket every day. The perfect clip, good steel, nice blade shape and the minimum weight making him to a perfect "invisible" helper .Thanks to this review i bought a excelent knife. Good spent money.
Take the clip off of these little knives..They are more trouble than they there worth ..Who cares of the knife is at the bottom of your pocket..Plus side too...Thinner .And easier to grasp...Just my pinion...
I'm a total novice when it comes to knives, so my question might understandably be considered stupid by more experienced viewers. Is the SOG Flash 1 considered a switchblade? Thank you in advance to anyone who responds.
@shysterlicious no its assisted opening which means you have to push it open for the force of the spring like tension to be activated switchblades you just push a button to activate it hope that helps!
@tytig94 two totally diff knives. If you're looking for a dedicated EDC blade, get the flash 1. If you think you might need it for both EDC and defense, get the tenacious.
@TedOfNod Hmm... what knife would be good for defenses, edc, reliability, and sharpness that will stay, and something in the price range of this knife. Thanks
@tytig94 Personally id recommend this or a spyderco persistence instead of a tenacious for an edc blade. Just got my flash 1, so far im very impressed with it. Its razer sharp out of the package, small, light weight, assisted opening, and has a solid lockup whats not to love? I do think its a bit pricey for what you are getting though.
SOG has an "Unconditional Pocket Clip Replacement". Meaning if you lose it or break it, tell them the model and color and they send you a replacement clip, no questions. I have an Aegis tanto. I'm considering getting the Flash 1. Flash 2 is just a bit bigger. I like the fact that this is tiny lol. I used to like the Flash 2 more.
received my flash 1 yesterday.it had lots of side to side movement that i corrected.however it also has lots of up and down movement that i cant fix.very disapointing.gonna send it back and let them fix it the way it should have been to begin with.
Just wanted to say you do an outstanding job with your reviews and videos and general i find myself watching your videos than to watch regular TV, Keep up the good work, and thank you.
I got a Flash II partially serrated for EDC. Hasn't had an issue at all. It's beat up, and a little dull now (my mistake), and the only thing that happened was the clip was a little wiggly until I tightened the screw above it, and it's as good as it's ever been. Excellent knife, over all. Good review!
Great video! This is the knife I rely on for everyday use, I love it. I wish you could legally carry larger knives though, with the size of my hands it's hard to get an authoritative grip on it when the need arises.
@drummer12 I don't know, but it's where it needs to be when you need to use it, and that's what counts. If you were really curious, you could take your knife apart and find out! Hell, I'm bored.... might just do that.
Hey nutnfancy, so i was at my local knife store and i saw some jackass at the counter holding a sog flash 1 and saying to the clerk " you can tell this knife is cheap due to the lightweight" and i told him firmly grasp your ears firmly and pull your head out of your ass. just that and nothing more, no explination. then i left.
@MikeReiner u are a loser u just told us u lost ur job to a third world country buisness that means u suck and probebly were not that important to begin with so fuck u loser
lol "here are some competitors *pulls out five more similar high-end EDC knives*" It's just amazing to see your collection, even in a small slice like this one. I can't believe how much you must have spent on it. ;-P I'm planning a knife purchase--my first one really just for pleasure, even though it'll fill a gap in my collection (large knife, tactical knife, knife that's JUST a knife). I'm thinking of a Flash II. If the last condition surprises you, my last two knives: SAK, leatherman knife.
I just respect all american companies that dont send production jobs overseas to decrease cost and quality because 3rd world nations fuck workers over the hardest

@SoldierCyfix So basically, regardless of the quality of the product in question, if it's not made where you live, you will automatically assume it's a third world country sweat shop product?
As somebody who lost my job because it was outsourced to a third world country, I just want to make something clear: If you think everything made overseas is low quality, you are a fool that is in denial. Yes some stuff sucks, but that applies to any country of origin now, doesn't it?
@SoldierCyfix its true that not all overseas junk is junk of low quality [quality checked brand products are a good example] but i have grave disrespect for companies that send production jobs outside the US.
as you must have already realized, we pretty much lost all production capabilities.
so i try to buy as many USA made products as need be, and i try to minimize the amount of overseas products i must buy, do you find something wrong with that?
I just got this knife based on Nutn's review! My own personal opinion - my very first impression was that this knife was quite small, and I was wishing I had gotten a Flash 2. I carry a Cold Steel American Lawman on patrol, and the Flash 1 is a LOT smaller! But, after carrying it for a couple weeks, I love the size! I carry it off duty, and am able to put my hand in the pocket without the knife interfering.
The flash is one of the knives that I regret not buying but every time i go to get it, I end up not buying it for some crazy reason. I think I'm just not in love with the look.
i saw several of your reviews and they were so helpful. I really liked the others that compared in this category but I went with the flash 1. I appreciated that you take pride in your "fair and unbiased" descriptions to help us make better decisions with our money.
Just thought I'd bring attention to an "illegal" knife campaign being started by District Attorney Cy Vance in NY with the support of Bloomberg. I think it's important that the nutnfancy fans know about it and if nutnfancy has any ideas how we can all help to support our rights. Vance is also funding this by taking all the capital gained by distributors of these knives.
Hey Nutn, building up my SOG collection, trying to get a Falsh 1 non serrated but very difficult to find in Australia. Had to settle on a serrated model. Looking forward to its arrival.
i think this knife is too small and kinda junky and weak. it could never go beyond tasks like opening letters and cutting string. All the sogs I have, have terrible lockup and wiggle even when the pivot is too tight. Maybe i just got some bad pennies. Overall pretty weak knives - the 'flash' series.
Ancient tribies tell of "the motherload" a collection of knives so vast it can chop the moutains themselves. nutnfancy is in possession of "the motherload"
Hi, This size knife is about the biggest knife they allow at my college (University of California). I know this is not even close to a defensive knife. But with the restrictions in place, how would this knife fare in a life or death confrontation when all other options are exhausted?
@fake1009 welll uhhhh im sure if someone was stabbed by this they would defiantly back off and could be lethal force if they are stabbed in the stomach or chest but since it is so small and it is a folding design it might be hard to deploy also it could slip out of your hand cuz its so small and it doesn't have much reach. but trust me if you got stabbed by any blade you would back off... HOPE THIS HELPED :D
look into sog twitch 2 has steel liners but they did a good job at keeping it lightweight backlock but the clip is not at the top mine had no bladeplay and a bit larger than this knife and will look great dutacoated look into it
This is a great EDC. I have a small collection of folding knives, and carry daily, but I don't have a lot of use for a knife. Or so I thought. This knife is small enough to not appear threatening, and one can do all kinds of work with it! In just a matter of hours I had cut strings off of my work shirt, and several others work shirts, cut up a pizza, peeled an orange, removed a hang nail and dug out a splinter; all with the Flash I. Thanks Nutn, your review made me a believer in the TNP.
i always wondered what happens to those people that get good at carrying super heavy loads do they feel the same way i do after a cast is removed from a broken bone
why are you embarrassed by your knife collection, you do an amazing job at knife reviews, and after all, who doesn't like knives? Keep making videos man, love em.
Man needs no justification for his knives. A man owns what a man wants. If you work hard, support your family, and pay your bills, as nutn obviously does, you should have a decorative rock collection if you want one, needs no explanation. Keep the great vids coming
Just ordered this knife! and since I am cheap I know get to wait a week and a half for "super saver" shipping to get it to me! Thanks nutnfancy I appreciate the reviews they are awesome.
@1911Geezer They NEVER open without having ALOT of pressure put on the blade because the spring that gives it the assist opening puts back tension on the blade till its about 20% open when the spring switches and kicks in. You should be fine if thats your worry.
Flash 1 is nice but i prefer my Benchmade Osbourne 943. We have a couple Flash 1s in the hardware store i work in and i like em a lot tho:D. I have a SOG PowerAssist multitool that i looooooove:D
Thanks for all the great vids nutnfancy! What about the Benchmade Aphid? I don't see any vids on it...same POU as Flash I w/metal lining at only 1.65 oz. I just picked mine up for $35 on sale at local store, its awsome!
I bought it from brigadequartermasters about a year ago, no problems through customs. I've also seen other SOG knives in shops in Spain like the Trident. I think they ARE legal.
So this is how it all started

All the sogs I have, have terrible lockup and wiggle even when the pivot is too tight. Maybe i just got some bad pennies. Overall pretty weak knives - the 'flash' series.

What's the list of steel for typical edc blades, starting from low end to high? Thanks

Ancient tribies tell of "the motherload" a collection of knives so vast it can chop the moutains themselves. nutnfancy is in possession of "the motherload"

Hi, This size knife is about the biggest knife they allow at my college (University of California). I know this is not even close to a defensive knife. But with the restrictions in place, how would this knife fare in a life or death confrontation when all other options are exhausted?
fake1009 1 year ago
@fake1009 get some pepper spray.
seesundae1 1 year ago
@fake1009 welll uhhhh im sure if someone was stabbed by this they would defiantly back off and could be lethal force if they are stabbed in the stomach or chest but since it is so small and it is a folding design it might be hard to deploy also it could slip out of your hand cuz its so small and it doesn't have much reach. but trust me if you got stabbed by any blade you would back off... HOPE THIS HELPED :D

Mine arrived several days ago. I've been using it for pretty much all of the tasks mentioned in the video, It's working great!

Laughed at the tiny lanyard hole next to the clip, if that is what that is. Surprisingly light, lighter than I expected.
MaxPayne725 1 year ago
look into sog twitch 2 has steel liners but they did a good job at keeping it lightweight backlock but the clip is not at the top mine had no bladeplay and a bit larger than this knife and will look great dutacoated look into it

Man needs no justification for his knives. A man owns what a man wants. If you work hard, support your family, and pay your bills, as nutn obviously does, you should have a decorative rock collection if you want one, needs no explanation. Keep the great vids coming

Has anyone had a problem with assisted knives opening in the pocket?
1911Geezer 1 year ago
@1911Geezer No problem as long as you stick with the quality brands. Like those quoted in the video.
But no name brands or old models can be dangerous, opening into your backpack or else, reaching into your backpack to get cut.
Victortrotska 1 year ago
@1911Geezer They NEVER open without having ALOT of pressure put on the blade because the spring that gives it the assist opening puts back tension on the blade till its about 20% open when the spring switches and kicks in. You should be fine if thats your worry.

I just got my SOG Flash 1 from Amazon and it is very nice. For my large hands it seems a little small, however it is light and is very fast.

I bought it from brigadequartermasters about a year ago, no problems through customs. I've also seen other SOG knives in shops in Spain like the Trident. I think they ARE legal.

I love the Flash I. Its so small and light I always forget I have it on me. Mine came razor sharp and is perfect for little tasks here and there.
My only criticism is the sliding lock is small and a bit uncomfortable to use. Everything else is perfect imo.
