I power washed, then applied the deck prep after and brushed it in etc as recommended. Same situation.
Called Behr, "do you have the original receipt?" Nope. "That's fine buy new product and we will refund you" send the UPCs from the products you used., I sent upc from 2 cans of stain i had left. Tried the deck stripper doesn't work, what did stick WON'T COME OFF without sanding, called them and got a nope never got the letter, you're SOL. Garbage product & bad CS.
ok. I wasted a couple more minutes of my life and watched the video one last time. You only said you painted the deck a year prior to to application. You DID NOT state whether or not it was power washed nor did you state if it was a brand new deck. DID YOU BRUSH IT ON OR WHAT?
First of all, how was this product applied? Was it rolled on? Sprayed with an airless? Or was it brushed on? Also, did it get power washed before applying the stain? If it wasn't power washed and brushed on I would believe it probably would't hold up. Note to anyone with a complaint about anything. Explain your application techniques.
@brnikko if you had bothered to listen to the video or scroll down and read some of my comments, you would know how the product was applied. Note to anyone with a complaint about someone with a complaint-take the time to read.
I purchased this product for my front porch. Surfaces were properly prepped, product was properly applied. . It has been on five months, and I can literally rub my foot across it and see the stain rub off of the wood. BTW, I do work in the paint department at our local Home Depot. I am expected to promote Behr products, but after seeing how quickly this product failed, I cannot in good conscience recommend it to customers..
I like this video,,,,,,,,,,,,,my issue is with my labor,,,,,,,,,,,,,and Behr crap paints coverage,,,,,,,of alot of their products,,,,,,,,,a person could waste time putting coat after coat,,,,,,,the paint sags and runs,,,,,,,
(cont.) stain last longer? or do i just need to wait until the deck has lost its water-repelling abilities and restain? if i need to restain, do i have to strip off the old stain first, or can i just stain over the old stain. i thought i read or heard somewhere that you shouldn't put fresh stain over dry stain. thanks to anyone who can help with accurate answers.
can someone answer a simple question or two that i have been looking for an answer to for the past 3 hours? i have an at least 10 year old deck that my father stained shortly after the deck was built (incidentally, it was behr semi-transparent) but he hasn't done anything to it since. i've sanded it down and am going to stain it. i'd like to know if there is regular maintenance, like applying a waterproofing and uv-protecting sealer, that i can perform on a regular basis to make the (cont.)
This product works well. I myself have used it on dozens of decks. There are some prep work needed before applying a stain. If applying to a new deck, the product that is used to treat the wood will resist a stain and not allow it to absorb properly. In this case a deck wash and a stain primer is needed.
Im not in the mood for fooling around. Dont care who is right here Im not going to use it and find out the hard way. Thank you sir. Im sorry your deck looks like poop now, but mine wont.
I have had the same results and after telling 3 other deck owners to use it, they too also have had the same results. Was at Home Depot yesturday and talked with a young lady in the paint department which I had talked to last year about the product and she her self used it and is VERY Dis-Satisified with the product and has a hard time recommending it to customers. She did say if you call the number on the top of the can, they did reimburse her for the products with product of her choice.
Sure wish we had seen your video before we bought this same product two years ago. The Home Depot employee saw us with Thompsons in our cart and talked us into making the more costly switch because we should "do it right so it will last.". Unfortunately we had much the same experience as you. Even though we followed the directions precisely we were told we must have done something wrong putting the product on. Needless to say, we will NEVER buy Behr products again and will warn our friends.
Well I've used Behr Wood stain product with good results. Mine has been on there a year now and looks about the same as when i put it on. Check my channel for a link to my video for the steps i took to apply the stain and the results that i got.
why is anyone even considering an Acrylic stain ???? it wouldnt matter what brand it is, if its not oil based it wont last. stop bashing Behr because you used the wrong product around a hot tub. Behr #4430,Valspar, Messmers,Cabot, Ben Moore, any of those could have been used here.
I have done professional painting for 10 years and I would never use Behr because of the price and the lack of difference in quality of something that costs 1/3 the ammount. Of course there is that little warranty, they never back it up. For that product you have there to work as claimed your deck has to be treated and fully dried and new with future maintenance.
I had the same results on my deck, but using Behr's latex paint. Same long warranty, same 1-year disaster. Can't buy the stuff anymore, either, so maybe they realize it's junk, too.
Had a little peeling? Sounds like the product was starting to fail there usmelly. It would have been nice to see the befores on your deck rather than you recoating it and THEN shooting the video. As a contractor that refinishes around 500 decks a year I can tell you EVERY deck I see with BEHR on it looks exactly the same. All the horizontals are peeling and faded while the rails look fine. This is usually after only 1 season of their 4 to 7 year warranty.
I used this product on my new pressure treated deck and on cedar railings. The deck and railing were different colours it didn't make a diference. Both had aged a year before applied. The railing started to fail the first spring and by summer so did the deck. I refinished it again since I had some left and bought some prep products to make sure I did it right for sure this time. By the next spring it was failing again, Product looked good but is too expensive to use yearly. It's garbage
I too had an issue with Behr...brutal product to work with and it lasts less that 6 months before it started to peel up again.
Had to use a belt sander to sand down the whole deck again and start with another product. I ended up using Sikkens and absolutely love it. Looks great, easy to use and I have talked to many people who use it and all are happy with the results.
My deck did the exact same thing after one winter. I too followed directions for pre prep and application... This stuff is junk! I am not putting down Cabots Australian Timber Oil...
I also had a bad result with this product. But I complained, submitted photographic evidence, and got a prompt refund of the purchase price (though not of my time and labor). So, in my case, they stood by their warranty. The manufacturer's representative noted that I had applied it to a previously stained deck without complete removal of the previous finish and that was likely the reason for the poor result. This is mentioned in another post above. So, this might be OK for some applications.
This product is crap! Home Depot recommended as their best deck stain/sealer. This stuff is advertised to last at least 6 years. It was applied according to the instructions and it didn't last 2 years. The manufacturer doesn't even stand behind its warranty. Don't waste your money or time on this crap.
i am a painting contractor in Tampa. I have used this product on my own fence as well as customers with no problem. Its been on my fence for over a year.
I used the Behr Semi Transparent oil based stain on my deck also due to the advertising hype I guess. The coverage is terrible and in just one year it looks like I never stained the deck! I reapplied this year hoping that a second coat would do the trick but after a rain storm the puddles of water, which I thought were a good indicator, left light bleached out areas. I'll never use Behr again!
Well, 2 years in and my two-tone Behr Premium Solid deck got a quick refresh. NONE of the white railing required any touch up. The dark-chocolate deck stain had little peeling, and still looked fine, if not new. This surface heats up to 130 deg F and gets down to sub- zero deg. F temps in the winter. Total time to paint my 15x15 deck floor? 1.5 hrs. 1.5 hrs in 2 years for upkeep. That aint bad. Consumer Reports ranks this product #1.
@usmelly Really? that is unbelievable. Literally un believable. Although a guess anything is possible. A stopped clock still has the correct time twice a day. I noticed this is at least the second time you have posted a comment touting how wonderful this product is. Are you sure you don't work at the paint department at Home Depot?
Semi-transparent stains are notoriously weak. Over 20 years in the business ought to make one aware of that. It's hard to use a solid stain on beautiful wood but it's the best way to get longer life. I wonder what their warranty covers!?
@UsagiTsunami That is the point! Their warranty was for 7 years. There was no disclaimer saying if you use the semi-transparent instead of the solid it will look like hell after 6 months.
Your exactly right. This product is CRAP. I did the same thing you did and the product literally pealed off the deck after less than one year. I know what Im doing. I just finished resanding the entire deck and putting on two coats of Benjamin Moore Arborcoat and the results were spectacular. Six hours of sanding and 3-4 hrs. of staining. DON EVEN THINK OF USING THIS PRODUCT ON YOUR DECK.
Oh, great. I just bought the little 7.5 oz can of this stuff to do my wooden porch stairs. I got it home and there are not any instructions on the label at all. Just warning labels and limited warranty stuff. It says to refer to the 1 gallon can or online to see use instructions. That's not too great if you are already home without a computer. I came online to see how to use it and came across this. I doubt I'll use it now at least not for my front steps.I don't want to do it over every year.
Is it not because your deck is too low to the ground? They won't refund you because your deck does not meet their requirements in order for the product to work properly. you need approx 24" of clearance in order to allow moisture to escape. It is going to push up. Try any other product, you WILL get the same result.
@JYPD1 Interesting, but I have not found this to be true. The Behr product failed just as bad on the top of my arbor which is 7 feet off the ground. Also when I removed this product and switched to Olympic last year, I had much better results.
Agree. Applied this product to a brand new cedar deck. Following second winter 80% of stain peeled similar to video. Currently, taking deck apart to rebuild and restain with Cabot or a similar high quality penetrating stain. Be advised, Behr deck stain WILL damage your investment.
It worked great for me. I'm going to buy more and do my other deck. I think the folks on this page probably didn't notice that is a water based product, and as such it wont work well on pressure treated wood, or wood that has been previously stained with an oil based stain.
@clarklandis I would hold off doing that other deck until you see how that first deck looks after a year. It might change your mind. Also, if this stain won't work well on pressure treated wood, then they should mention that on the can, since many decks are made with this product.
@behrpremium I've had great luck with latex-based stain on old cracked wood (some of it PT) that no longer held paint. I touched it up as whatever paint was left peeled under it and eventually it stabilized to a solid color, needing very little maintenance. But I've seen the stuff fall right off decks which had been oil-stained a year earlier. Could it be that it works on any wood that has weathered sufficiently, but not either PT or oil-stained wood that still has a "sticky" or "wet" finish?
I forgot to add in, HD employee told me NOT to pressure wash the deck with any powerful settings, it will cause pores to tighten up, just deck prep, brush and either pressure washer on low low power or garden hose to clean it up. And I DID pressure wash my deck to remove grim etc prior to using deck prep etc.(it doesn't say this anywhere on behr product) but I did use PW on power mode and sure enough deck stripped in spots and I did get close to wood on a few spots...coincidence maybe?
I just called behr warranty on this same product; I only was able to apply 1 coat(around 2 gallons) before weather wouldn't cooperate(Calgary, AB) it kept raining off and on etc and then got too cold so we only had the 1 coat on and never used the deck all winter, looked at deck this summer and a few spots were peeling. Went to HD, called Behr; They will give me stripper, deck prep and 4 gallons for free to redo entire deck, so they do stand behind it. Also the solid stain is 10 year warranty ;)
they suck behr is crap and so are their products I even told them I could try and help them improve by doing a few things they denied even wanting to listen
I used this product 4 years ago. I did not read the instructions, and very soon afterward - it looked bad. I assumed it was my fault, so I sanded the whole deck off and reapplied the same product, this time following instructions. Same result - less than a year later it was awful!
So 2 years ago I used another product and got better results. After two years it actually looks better than the Behr stuff did after only one summer. Consumer Reports screwed up if they said this is the best.
@behrpremium I used the semi transparent 501 cedar stain in the Premium line yesterday. I'm a professional painter and in 25 years I've never seen a product apply so poorly. Where I used a 4 inch brush on the deck in the shade it still looked streaked and lapped... Beware! and stay away from this miserable product. I must say CWF did the same thing to me recently. I had used it for years with success. I believe the government changes (very STUPID) have made many finishes unworkable...
Just a couple of questions, Clean the deck and then a brightener and rinsing both off prior to applying the stain? Also what method did you use to apply the stain. im getting ready to do my own fence and hace considered this exact product ..
totally believable you can tell that it was in fact properally applied, I know some cans do say reapply after a year or 2 esp high traffic, wood looks fine better than most decks I have seen every ahole tries to half ass the prep on a deck thats shot and then slather some stain on and complain the product is at fault. This guy is good. Glad I didnt buy this stuff, Nice post.
Ha, when they say you only waited 9 months and you should have waited a year, you can tell they are full of it. That lumber was probably sitting in Home Depot or wherever for months before you picked it up. Besides that's after only One year. It don't trust Behr products either. They could have been good at one time. More than likely early on.
@syyenergy7 Thank you...good point. I forgot to say earlier that I also used this product on a 10 year old wood trellis and got the same results. This year I sanded everything back off and switched to olympic decking stain and so far its holding up much better
@syyenergy7 um, yes. There are these things called "the sun" and "the rain" and strange white stuff called "snow" that comes around when its cold. Strangely, appearances of these things are rarely reported inside warehouses.
@Oddmanout84 Yeah right tell me another. He also tried it on wood aged 10 years,, same garbage results. Do Whatever You want. You like the junk, use it and have 'fun'.
I'd like to know two things; what type of wood is that and how new was the wood when you applied the product. Since you say you followed the cleaning instructions exactly I'll leave that one out.
If its mahogany, you're doing it wrong. Mahogany requires special stains since its a very dense wood, NOT Behr water based stains.
If its NEW pressure treated, you're doing it wrong. That needs to weather at least a season before staining or it will reject the stain.
The wood I used was pressure treated purchased 9 months earlier. So, I wasn't doing it wrong. I'm a believer of following all the directions before using a product!
@behrpremium 9 months does not equal AT LEAST one year, as recommended for pressure treated wood. The wood rejected the stain because the stain was applied too early. Sorry, but it looks like its not the product's fault, but the end user.
@behrpremium Actually, You did. Pressure treated wood needs AT LEAST one YEAR before it is stained. 9 months is NOT the minimum. I can tell from the video that the wood rejected the stain, most likely because it was applied too early, and did not soak into the wood as it normally would have. As always, preparation is the most important step in any project.
@Oddmanout84 you sound like a spokesman for Behr. A little too eager to find fault with the consumer. If the 1 year theory were true, Behr should say so on the product. They do not. A year later, I sanded and bought all the appropriate Behr deck brightner/contitioner, being careful to follow all directions and foolishly tried the product again with the same results.
@behrpremium Actually, I'm no spokesperson, I use the products and have always had great results. I've also heard the same from every other person who has properly applied the product. Though the products are sold at my workplace, I garner no interest or pleasure in selling a crap product (like America's Finest paint), and will send customers directly to our competitors if they have the better item.
@Oddmanout84 So maybe you are not a spokesperson, but you do sell this product at your "workplace." One can only assume you work at HomeDepot, since no reputable paint store, in my opinion, would sell this crap product. And they would not be able to sell it for less than Home
i am having the same issue with my deck, sanded the ENTIRE deck down last summer took ~2 months, all the way to bare wood. Bought behr stain, and now 1 year latter all the knots and hard wood areas of my deck are all now bare wood again. Ill never use behr stain again.
I had a similar problem with regular behr stain but when I went to Home Depot to buy new stain the associate called Behr. The Behr rep said that if I would give Behr another chance they would reimburse me for the premium stain and all the equipment I need to strip the old deck and refinish. The bill came to $500 and I was reimbursed. Hopefully the stain will take this time
@leafs4ever94 sounds too good to be true! not the experience I had. I even had to file a complaint with the Better Business Bureau and still wait a year before getting a refund and that was just for the product. Good work on you part. Would love to know more about how you were able to get that to happen.
Was this a new deck? I've heard that pre-treated lumber will reject the stain due to the treating process. BTW - Companies know they can guarantee and not deliver - it's part of Capitalism...
Thanks for the insight. I was looking at this product, but decided to go with the new Benjamin Moore's Arborcoat stain and clear coat system. You just reapply the clear coat once a year as maintenance. Have to wait a few years to see how it fairs.
I experienced similar results. Refinished cedar deck summer of 08. By summer of 09 there was already significant peeling. I live in the Northwest. Rain all winter and hot dry sun all summer. The places that look bad are where there is constant sun exposure. Places that get some shade still look great 2 years later. I refinished a cedar bench at the same time with Inwood stain. It sits out in the sun and rain all year round too and 2 years later still looks great.
I couldn't agree with you more. My deck is five years old and I've had to redo the staining twice so far. This will be the third time and I refuse to use Behr again; no matter what what the rating services say. This was the worst of all the years and I've had to actually sand the deck down so that I could start from scratch. To give you some idea, this year you could peel the Behr off with your nail and it looked like my deck was twenty years old. Never again!
Thanks for posting this. I had the same problem. It looked great the first year then awful the next year. Certainly does not last their warranted claim period. I didn't take any short cuts and followed their instruction step by step. I no longer use or recommend their products.
Im a Behr employee in the Technical Service Department, we stand behind our products 100% and if you would have called the number thats on the top of the can we can diagnose what happened that made the application peal prematurely, if you have not resolved your issue please give us a call at 800-854-0133, we will be more than happy to assist you and anyone with a similar issue. Peeling is cause mainly for improper surface preparation that doesn't mean pressure washing!
Behr does not stand behind their product. If they did, I wouldn't have posted this video and filed a complaint with the Better Business Bureau. Even after all of that it took a year to get a refund for the product, which does not cover having to remove the product and start over with a better one.
I am really worried now. I did half my deck a few days ago, and was happpy with the way it looked and the way it went on (with a brush). Now I'm worried about finishing it with this. Is there another semi transparent that will match the color of "redwood?" If I can finish it with a matching color, when this fails, at least I will only have to redo the Behr section. I'm hoping against hope that the problem could have been with prep.
I have been very happy with Behr interior premium paints.
@PHL427 If you prpare the deck properly by cleaning the deck first you should not have an issue. Most people do not want to go through the time of cleaning first then the stain will not work properly. Just powerwashing does not totally do the job.
Your posting confirms the "User Reviews" on Consumer Reports own website rating this product, only a mere 1.5 stars our of 5 possible, total 16 reviews! With this many votes, something must be wrong with this stain. I have used Cabots and Penofin over the years, on a 1000 sf mountain home deck (6000 ft elev), and am always looking for a better product. Thank you for posting this video, and saving me hours and hours of wasted money and time!
Darn, I wish I'd seen this yesterday before I did the first coat of Behr wood-toned deck stain on my deck. I need to buy another gallon to do the second coat- can I switch to a different product for the second coat or am I committed to finishing the job with more Behr stain?
unfortunately , the damage is already done. I would stay with the same product. Keep your proof of purchase and receipt so in the spring when it starts peeling you can at least get your money back. Then be sure to get all the Behr off before switching to a better product.
use a semitransparent when ever possible either oil or waterborne. penafin makes great oil stains for decking. some oils dont dry like cabots timberoil? they turn black over time then you have to strip it off. i use sherwin williams deckscapes in oil or waterborne. best stuff.. dont use a solid latex on pressure treated wood. it will peel over time.
I purchased this same product to stain two Adirondack chairs that I made. The chairs were never used, yet the stain has worn off in many places and little black moldy spots are appearing all over. This is one of the absolute worst products I have ever purchased, and it in no way works as indicated on the packaging.
Same happened to me. I bought 3 gallons of it. It looked really good in July of last year after I did it. Now it is all worn off. I only used the deck maybe 5 times in the last year. I'm going to try and find some better stain at home depot today. I dont want to stain every 9 months with this product.
Wish I would have seen this before I did my deck. Used the same stain. And its awful. It looks like crap!! Behr is on my *hit list for a long time. It will be a lot of work getting it fixed.
also worth mentioning....many times deck stains fail because no one ever coats the whole deck. who ever stains underneath and all the way around every board? NOONE. thats usually the root of peeling
for the same price, you can get deckscapes from sherwin williams and it will last for about 5 years. no gimmicks, no warranties. just a good product. i dont know what kind of testing consumer reports does, but their all wrong. deckscapes survives cold northeast winters, shoveling, and dogs running all over it.
I agree! Our deck looks identical! I can put up a video to show! half way through the season last year it began to wear off! We are trying to decide what product to use this time round. Thank you Behrpremium, we fully agree!
I agree! Our deck looks identical! I can put up a video to show! half way through the season last year it began to wear off! We are trying to decide what product to use this time round. Thank you Behrpremium, we fully agree!
Watch the YouTube video on Woodrich cleaning/preping & staining your fence/deck. It looks like that product does wonders, I almost want to try it myself. Thank you for your video, it always helps other consumers who were thinking of buying that particular brand.
I've been in the restoration and refinishing business for 14 years restoring on average 350 to 500 decks and fences a year. I can tell you that in the time these companies have introduced their acrylic / latex finishes have have seen very few hold up to the elements. Word to the wise: Don't use anything other than an oil based finish on decks and other horizontal surfaces. The acrylics look good for about 6 months to a year and then begin peeling.
I don't work for Behr or Home Depot. I read the Consumer Reports review on the Behr premium stains for decks (they called it the best) and stained my deck "Castle Grey" (really a chocolate color), with white railings. My deck was new, and exposed unfinished from Dec 2008-July 2009. My prep was a quick power wash. Ten months and one seriously cold midwest later it looks like I stained it yesterday, and water still beads. Go with Consumer Reports, my video reply will be up in 2 months.
well i suppose anything is possible. Even a stopped clock has the correct time twice a day. I have found that the majority of people including myself find this product to not hold up as advertised. I was foolish enough to try it twice, even sanding with 80 grit and then using all the behr products advised. The outcome was the same. coming soon......a new video of that second attempt
i personally havent used behr paint but if you pretty much want to buy similar stuff, go to walmart and buy the colorplace paint, behr makes it at there facilities
I work at behr in manufacturing in chicago heights, the people we have working in our qc lab a pretty much idiots that approve stuff to be made when the grind is not right. some of the ingridents like some of the powders get on the floor, they have us sweep it up and use it so im sure dirt mixture doesnt help anything
I wanted to say thank you to the Lady who saw this video and who works for Behr. She was finally able to get me a refund for the product I purchased.
Since then I sanded off all the old stain with 80 grit and used the Behr deck conditioner that opens the grain, then re stained. This resulted in a very flat sheen that holds the dirt, but at least the stain is holding up a little longer, but certainly not for 5 to 7 years.
What you might not know is that this product is not gonna last 6 years i doubt that u can find any semi that will this will work properly if you prep your surface corectly
What do you expect when you buy OOPS paint? When you see the bar code torn off the side on any can from Home Depot that means that it was tinted incorrectly and they sold it for 5 bucks!!!
I had the exact same results with this product. It didn't last an entire year. And who cares about the warranty anyway? All that gets you is your money back or another can of crappy stain You still have to back and do all the labor again. Run from this product!!!
well, i dont think painting on a humid day would be such a good idea, specialy if the day is humid.... also rain wont help to stick the paint well... and I defenitly DO NOT recomend to paint your walls and than water them with a waterhouse, that is not going to help eather, specialy on a humid day. UNLEASE u want the paint to come off and than do the hole proses again, only than I would recomend to water the fresh paint with a waterhouse... "specialy on a humid day"
My friend used to work for Behr's call center in Santa Ana, and he would constantly talk about all the calls they would get about their deck stains (he said they amounted to the vast majority of their calls). Oh, and the so called 'experts' that answer the phone, he say they're actually temps that are only trained on how to navigate their computer system for about a week. And don't bother on buying Kilz or Color Place when you get angry at Behr- he admitted the same company makes them all.
Behr deck stains were #1 in a Consumer Reports side by side comparison comparing 1, 2 and 3 year durability. Solid color stains were "fair" at 3 years, with no semi-transparent stain by any maker lasing more than 2 years, no transparent stain did well after 1 year. The fact is all paint and staints need to be re-applied regularly, you just buy more time with a solid-color option.
100% true. I had the same experience. Flat surfaces need to be stained every year (not 6 years as the product claims) and vertical surfaces last about 2 years. I originally just assumed that all stains were the same, equally as bad. Perhaps I should try switching brands.
I wish I had seen this video before I stained my deck. My video "Behr Home Depot Paint Problems" is under my ID "gkn08215" and I had the same problem WITHIN 3 MONTHS!
I used this same product, cedar semitransparent, last june. I followed all instructions including using behr cleaner and prep. I used the proper amount of stain. I had to do it again this june because it was completely worn. My deck looked much like the one in the video.
I stained my 1500 sq ft, brand new deck with Behr weatherproofing stain. It failed after one winter. I contacted Behr and they gave me all "new", specially formulated stain as well as all the prep products. I followed the instructions to the letter and re-stained the deck. It looked awesome. Well, winter is over, 7 months have passed and the stain is all failed again. I would not use this product!!!
i used the same behr stain on my deck a few years ago-brand new deck btw-and i got much the same results. this was with light traffic, and the stain simply washes off in the rain and sun very quickly.
Use either Sikkens or Cabot. Those two I have had extensive experience with and they are nothing but the best products money can buy. Behr is garbage.
Hello just thought I'd send you a quick note. First, I'm sorry to see your product fail. I'm wondering why your test board stayed looking good and your deck didn't. Also, I noticed that you deck is under a spa. The chemicals from the spa splashing over time with wet feet can't be good for that product. As far as the warranty goes the product is covered and you can get either your money back or reimbursed for more product. You may have also been pressure washing the deck which is no good.
thanks for your comments. I may have not been clear about some details. The test board was stored in the garage and not exposed to the sun and rain. The decking looks just as bad where no spa water could splash on it. This company said they reimburse me, but they have not... even after filing a complaint with the Better Business Bureau!
For starters, I wouldn't use paint or stain from Home Depot even if they were giving it away. Home Depot's specs for paints and stains are deliberately sub par, and Behr is a glaring example of this. Among most professional painters, Behr is regarded as crap; plain and simple. And since Home Depot is like the Wal-Mart of paint (and home improvement in general), none of this comes as any big surprise.
I used a similar Behr Premium weatherproofing product on my deck last summer. Despite following the directions I am left with results similar to those shown in this video. I will be contacting Behr and looking for a better product. Thanks for taking the time to post this.
I think someone is trying to tell this company something. Instead of voting negative they should make a product that works and save a lot of heartache.
I'll say it again. I followed the instructions precisely with terrible results. Behr will not stand behind the warranty. So I have filed a complaint with the Better Business Bureau and would encourage other customers with similar results to do the same
I use grey primer underneath all mid to dark tones including red, dark green and blue and have not had any issues. I have used a red primer and it sucked because like you said the pigments are translucent and the end result was a watered down red primer that required more than 1 coat.
I used Behr red paint. The home dep. people who sold this to me also failed to tell us to prime with grey primer. The result was thick streaking which was a first in 25 years of painting. On complaining to HD,they stated 4 coats are to be applied before red paint has a good look. Will never use this shit paint or use HD for paint again.Sherwin Williams is my new resource and they are very good.
I have tried this stain for a client with the same results, it came off within months, not lasting one year. It all flaking off and NOT a good product. The client picked it out and is not happy with Behr. They will only pay for new Behr products, but I will never use it! I have done home remodel work for many years and this is the worst stain I have ever used!! I RECOMMEND OTHERS TO AVOID IT ALSO!!

Just finished stripping my deck. The prior owner used Behr with sillycone. It was an SOB to get off. BEHR does suck!!!! Use Ready Seal stain. Great stuff.
NEVER USE BEHR.
shad0w4life2 1 month ago
ok. I wasted a couple more minutes of my life and watched the video one last time. You only said you painted the deck a year prior to to application. You DID NOT state whether or not it was power washed nor did you state if it was a brand new deck. DID YOU BRUSH IT ON OR WHAT?
brnikko 1 month ago
First of all, how was this product applied? Was it rolled on? Sprayed with an airless? Or was it brushed on? Also, did it get power washed before applying the stain? If it wasn't power washed and brushed on I would believe it probably would't hold up. Note to anyone with a complaint about anything. Explain your application techniques.
brnikko 1 month ago
@brnikko if you had bothered to listen to the video or scroll down and read some of my comments, you would know how the product was applied. Note to anyone with a complaint about someone with a complaint-take the time to read.

I purchased this product for my front porch. Surfaces were properly prepped, product was properly applied. . It has been on five months, and I can literally rub my foot across it and see the stain rub off of the wood. BTW, I do work in the paint department at our local Home Depot. I am expected to promote Behr products, but after seeing how quickly this product failed, I cannot in good conscience recommend it to customers..

can someone answer a simple question or two that i have been looking for an answer to for the past 3 hours? i have an at least 10 year old deck that my father stained shortly after the deck was built (incidentally, it was behr semi-transparent) but he hasn't done anything to it since. i've sanded it down and am going to stain it. i'd like to know if there is regular maintenance, like applying a waterproofing and uv-protecting sealer, that i can perform on a regular basis to make the (cont.)

This product works well. I myself have used it on dozens of decks. There are some prep work needed before applying a stain. If applying to a new deck, the product that is used to treat the wood will resist a stain and not allow it to absorb properly. In this case a deck wash and a stain primer is needed.
WARFOX101 4 months ago
Im not in the mood for fooling around. Dont care who is right here Im not going to use it and find out the hard way. Thank you sir. Im sorry your deck looks like poop now, but mine wont.
AceVenturaXii 5 months ago
I have had the same results and after telling 3 other deck owners to use it, they too also have had the same results. Was at Home Depot yesturday and talked with a young lady in the paint department which I had talked to last year about the product and she her self used it and is VERY Dis-Satisified with the product and has a hard time recommending it to customers. She did say if you call the number on the top of the can, they did reimburse her for the products with product of her choice.
Lisazatutube 5 months ago

1MtnBoy 6 months ago
I have done professional painting for 10 years and I would never use Behr because of the price and the lack of difference in quality of something that costs 1/3 the ammount. Of course there is that little warranty, they never back it up. For that product you have there to work as claimed your deck has to be treated and fully dried and new with future maintenance.
BrianWarner1996 6 months ago
I had the same results on my deck, but using Behr's latex paint. Same long warranty, same 1-year disaster. Can't buy the stuff anymore, either, so maybe they realize it's junk, too.
oodoodanoo 6 months ago
Wow I almost bought this product. I am glad I checked, I was going to spray my new PT fence with a pump sprayer.
Thanks for letting us know. Did you find a better product?
vadodarya 6 months ago
Had a little peeling? Sounds like the product was starting to fail there usmelly. It would have been nice to see the befores on your deck rather than you recoating it and THEN shooting the video. As a contractor that refinishes around 500 decks a year I can tell you EVERY deck I see with BEHR on it looks exactly the same. All the horizontals are peeling and faded while the rails look fine. This is usually after only 1 season of their 4 to 7 year warranty.
timberseal 6 months ago
I used this product on my new pressure treated deck and on cedar railings. The deck and railing were different colours it didn't make a diference. Both had aged a year before applied. The railing started to fail the first spring and by summer so did the deck. I refinished it again since I had some left and bought some prep products to make sure I did it right for sure this time. By the next spring it was failing again, Product looked good but is too expensive to use yearly. It's garbage
Garth556 7 months ago
I too had an issue with Behr...brutal product to work with and it lasts less that 6 months before it started to peel up again.
Had to use a belt sander to sand down the whole deck again and start with another product. I ended up using Sikkens and absolutely love it. Looks great, easy to use and I have talked to many people who use it and all are happy with the results.

speedlineproducts1 7 months ago
I also had a bad result with this product. But I complained, submitted photographic evidence, and got a prompt refund of the purchase price (though not of my time and labor). So, in my case, they stood by their warranty. The manufacturer's representative noted that I had applied it to a previously stained deck without complete removal of the previous finish and that was likely the reason for the poor result. This is mentioned in another post above. So, this might be OK for some applications.
Lwayte 7 months ago

I'll never use Behr again!
totallyjones1 8 months ago
Well, 2 years in and my two-tone Behr Premium Solid deck got a quick refresh. NONE of the white railing required any touch up. The dark-chocolate deck stain had little peeling, and still looked fine, if not new. This surface heats up to 130 deg F and gets down to sub- zero deg. F temps in the winter. Total time to paint my 15x15 deck floor? 1.5 hrs. 1.5 hrs in 2 years for upkeep. That aint bad. Consumer Reports ranks this product #1.
usmelly 8 months ago
@usmelly Really? that is unbelievable. Literally un believable. Although a guess anything is possible. A stopped clock still has the correct time twice a day. I noticed this is at least the second time you have posted a comment touting how wonderful this product is. Are you sure you don't work at the paint department at Home Depot?
behrpremium 8 months ago
@usmelly Right, everyone knows behr makes the best coatings on the planet. Well everyone but professionals who apply coatings every day.
Not only do I know its not the best product on the market, I have no faith in Consumer Reports
ThePainterforyou 2 months ago
Semi-transparent stains are notoriously weak. Over 20 years in the business ought to make one aware of that. It's hard to use a solid stain on beautiful wood but it's the best way to get longer life. I wonder what their warranty covers!?
UsagiTsunami 8 months ago
@UsagiTsunami That is the point! Their warranty was for 7 years. There was no disclaimer saying if you use the semi-transparent instead of the solid it will look like hell after 6 months.
behrpremium 8 months ago
@behrpremium actually, the can in the video says 6 years and you say 6 years.
No1KCfan6 4 months ago
Your exactly right. This product is CRAP. I did the same thing you did and the product literally pealed off the deck after less than one year. I know what Im doing. I just finished resanding the entire deck and putting on two coats of Benjamin Moore Arborcoat and the results were spectacular. Six hours of sanding and 3-4 hrs. of staining. DON EVEN THINK OF USING THIS PRODUCT ON YOUR DECK.
donbos60 8 months ago
ThisOldErieHouse 8 months ago
Is it not because your deck is too low to the ground? They won't refund you because your deck does not meet their requirements in order for the product to work properly. you need approx 24" of clearance in order to allow moisture to escape. It is going to push up. Try any other product, you WILL get the same result.
JYPD1 8 months ago
@JYPD1 Interesting, but I have not found this to be true. The Behr product failed just as bad on the top of my arbor which is 7 feet off the ground. Also when I removed this product and switched to Olympic last year, I had much better results.
behrpremium 8 months ago
Agree. Applied this product to a brand new cedar deck. Following second winter 80% of stain peeled similar to video. Currently, taking deck apart to rebuild and restain with Cabot or a similar high quality penetrating stain. Be advised, Behr deck stain WILL damage your investment.
BuffaloRedhawk 9 months ago
thanks for the heads up, i will stick away from behr products after seeing this..
Sethjxl 9 months ago
It worked great for me. I'm going to buy more and do my other deck. I think the folks on this page probably didn't notice that is a water based product, and as such it wont work well on pressure treated wood, or wood that has been previously stained with an oil based stain.
clarklandis 9 months ago
@clarklandis I would hold off doing that other deck until you see how that first deck looks after a year. It might change your mind. Also, if this stain won't work well on pressure treated wood, then they should mention that on the can, since many decks are made with this product.
behrpremium 9 months ago
@behrpremium I've had great luck with latex-based stain on old cracked wood (some of it PT) that no longer held paint. I touched it up as whatever paint was left peeled under it and eventually it stabilized to a solid color, needing very little maintenance. But I've seen the stuff fall right off decks which had been oil-stained a year earlier. Could it be that it works on any wood that has weathered sufficiently, but not either PT or oil-stained wood that still has a "sticky" or "wet" finish?
lrd9999 7 months ago
Sadly thats why Professional Painters refer to Behr Paint as " Behrly Paint" and will not use it !
Next time try Cabot or Deck Scapes.

I forgot to add in, HD employee told me NOT to pressure wash the deck with any powerful settings, it will cause pores to tighten up, just deck prep, brush and either pressure washer on low low power or garden hose to clean it up. And I DID pressure wash my deck to remove grim etc prior to using deck prep etc.(it doesn't say this anywhere on behr product) but I did use PW on power mode and sure enough deck stripped in spots and I did get close to wood on a few spots...coincidence maybe?
shad0w4life2 9 months ago
I just called behr warranty on this same product; I only was able to apply 1 coat(around 2 gallons) before weather wouldn't cooperate(Calgary, AB) it kept raining off and on etc and then got too cold so we only had the 1 coat on and never used the deck all winter, looked at deck this summer and a few spots were peeling. Went to HD, called Behr; They will give me stripper, deck prep and 4 gallons for free to redo entire deck, so they do stand behind it. Also the solid stain is 10 year warranty ;)

I must say CWF did the same thing to me recently. totally believable you can tell that it was in fact properally applied, I know some cans do say reapply after a year or 2 esp high traffic, wood looks fine better than most decks I have seen every ahole tries to half ass the prep on a deck thats shot and then slather some stain on and complain the product is at fault.

More than likely early on.

behrpremium 1 year ago
I'd like to know two things; what type of wood is that and how new was the wood when you applied the product. Since you say you followed the cleaning instructions exactly I'll leave that one out.
If its mahogany, you're doing it wrong. Mahogany requires special stains since its a very dense wood, NOT Behr water based stains.
If its NEW pressure treated, you're doing it wrong. That needs to weather at least a season before staining or it will reject the stain.
Oddmanout84 1 year ago
The wood I used was pressure treated purchased 9 months earlier. So, I wasn't doing it wrong. I'm a believer of following all the directions before using a product!
behrpremium 1 year ago
@behrpremium 9 months does not equal AT LEAST one year, as recommended for pressure treated wood. The wood rejected the stain because the stain was applied too early. Sorry, but it looks like its not the product's fault, but the end user.
Oddmanout84 1 year ago
@behrpremium Actually, You did. Pressure treated wood needs AT LEAST one YEAR before it is stained. 9 months is NOT the minimum. I can tell from the video that the wood rejected the stain, most likely because it was applied too early, and did not soak into the wood as it normally would have. As always, preparation is the most important step in any project.
Oddmanout84 1 year ago
@Oddmanout84 you sound like a spokesman for Behr. A little too eager to find fault with the consumer. If the 1 year theory were true, Behr should say so on the product. They do not. A year later, I sanded and bought all the appropriate Behr deck brightner/contitioner, being careful to follow all directions and foolishly tried the product again with the same results.
behrpremium 1 year ago
@behrpremium Actually, I'm no spokesperson, I use the products and have always had great results. I've also heard the same from every other person who has properly applied the product. Though the products are sold at my workplace, I garner no interest or pleasure in selling a crap product (like America's Finest paint), and will send customers directly to our competitors if they have the better item.
Oddmanout84 1 year ago
@Oddmanout84 So maybe you are not a spokesperson, but you do sell this product at your "workplace." One can only assume you work at HomeDepot, since no reputable paint store, in my opinion, would sell this crap product. And they would not be able to sell it for less than Home
depot

I had a similar problem with regular behr stain but when I went to Home Depot to buy new stain the associate called Behr. The Behr rep said that if I would give Behr another chance they would reimburse me for the premium stain and all the equipment I need to strip the old deck and refinish. The bill came to $500 and I was reimbursed. Hopefully the stain will take this time
leafs4ever94 1 year ago

PHL427 1 year ago
@PHL427 If you prpare the deck properly by cleaning the deck first you should not have an issue. Most people do not want to go through the time of cleaning first then the stain will not work properly. Just powerwashing does not totally do the job.

unfortunately , the damage is already done.

I only used the deck maybe 5 times in the last year. also worth mentioning....many times deck stains fail because no one ever coats the whole deck. who ever stains underneath and all the way around every board? NOONE. thats usually the root of peeling

for the same price, you can get deckscapes from sherwin williams and it will last for about 5 years. no gimmicks, no warranties. just a good product. i dont know what kind of testing consumer reports does, but their all wrong. deckscapes survives cold northeast winters, shoveling, and dogs running all over it.

What do you expect when you buy OOPS paint? When you see the bar code torn off the side on any can from Home Depot that means that it was tinted incorrectly and they sold it for 5 bucks!!!

what did you expect! you bought BEHR! thompsons sucks too. even worse.

I had the exact same results with this product. It didn't last an entire year. And who cares about the warranty anyway? All that gets you is your money back or another can of crappy stain You still have to back and do all the labor again. Run from this product!!!

Behr paint is crap. It runs down the wall if the weather is humid. It's too thick and it won't dry property.
theannapolisman 2 years ago
well, i dont think painting on a humid day would be such a good idea, specialy if the day is humid.... also rain wont help to stick the paint well... and I defenitly DO NOT recomend to paint your walls and than water them with a waterhouse, that is not going to help eather, specialy on a humid day.

The fact is all paint and staints need to be re-applied regularly, you just buy more time with a solid-color option.
usmelly 2 years ago

My video "Behr Home Depot Paint Problems" is under my ID "gkn08215" and I had the same problem WITHIN 3 MONTHS!
gkn08215 2 years ago
I used this same product, cedar semitransparent, last june. I followed all instructions including using behr cleaner and prep. I used the proper amount of stain. I had to do it again this june because it was completely worn. My deck looked much like the one in the video.

Thank you for this video. I'm ready to stain my fence and this convinces me to stick with Thompson's

I would not use this product!!!

i used the same behr stain on my deck a few years ago-brand new deck btw-and i got much the same results. this was with light traffic, and the stain simply washes off in the rain and sun very quickly.
simply a garbage product, buyer beware indeed!
jamima69 2 years ago
Use either Sikkens or Cabot. Those two I have had extensive experience with and they are nothing but the best products money can buy. Behr is garbage.

Hello just thought I'd send you a quick note. First, I'm sorry to see your product fail. I'm wondering why your test board stayed looking good and your deck didn't. Also, I noticed that you deck is under a spa. The chemicals from the spa splashing over time with wet feet can't be good for that product. As far as the warranty goes the product is covered and you can get either your money back or reimbursed for more product. You may have also been pressure washing the deck which is no good.
superbowltexan 3 years ago
thanks for your comments.

Instead of voting negative they should make a product that works and save a lot of heartache.
austpom333 3 years ago
I'll say it again. I followed the instructions precisely with terrible results. Behr will not stand behind the warranty. So I have filed a complaint with the Better Business Bureau and would encourage other customers with similar results to do the same

I use grey primer underneath all mid to dark tones including red, dark green and blue and have not had any issues. I have used a red primer and it sucked because like you said the pigments are translucent and the end result was a watered down red primer that required more than 1 coat.

behr sucks!
andrew4766 3 years ago
