Awesome song. It tells the story of women who are physically or/and emotionally maltreated by husbands. I reckon it will be sung and enjoyed by generations to come.
My dad's better than your dad! LOL Come on (adults?) the whole music scene is subjective.....Personally, I reckon my version of this - in the bath on a Friday night - is the best. But I may be biased.......
This is an incredible song. BOTH versions are amazing. I do not think they can compete with eachother. Dolly wrote the song, but Emmylou recorded and released it first. Both versions are stellar. Both versions will bring a tear to your eye. And all you Dolly fans? Dolly wouldn't like you being mean to Emmylou's fans. Or trashing Emmylou. She herself loves Emmylou and obviously thinks highly of her and her music... otherwise Emmylou wouldnt have been able to record this song.
Perhaps Joplin copied EmmyLou...who was a young legend already! but Emmy has such a voice and delivery that she is revered by top country stars and has been for most of my 70 years.
@SeattleTennisPlayer for you, but not for me! She has grey hair now and that is not attractive! Also, she has an old face! In this performance from 1980, she's damn hot!
Thank you for posting this. This was taken from an old VHS tape, right? I can tell by the distortion at the bottom of the frame. That would not be seen on an old TV because it is in the over-scan area beyond the viewable portion of the tube. Check to see if your software has settings to crop the edges before encoding. That would be the thing to do. Peace.
Dolly Parton wrote this song for Emmylou, and she also sings a version of it, but sometimes a song can only be done justice by one artist. In this case, that artist is Emmylou. She masters it, and only the plaintive tones of her unique sound can evoke the emotion embedded in this sad tale.
I saw Emmylou Harris &her great band in NYC in 1982, but I misplaced the film! I'd love to find it because I went as close to the stage as I could get, and took some wonderful close-ups of EmmyLou! It was at the Doctor Pepper Music Festival! I know they're somewhere possibly--I do hope I find them someday downstairs! BobbyK
@Ruthy1952 I agree with you--but I'd place singers like Alison Krauss, etc, in that class, too, especially concerning a country-bluegrass-rock genre! Sincerely, BobbyK P.S. I have most of Emmylou's albums that were reissued as CD's!!!
@joepilot48 They all consider themselves descendants of the Cherokee, Wichita and all that rubbish. What I see, it's an unnatural shape of the nose - an obvious result of plastic surgery. In addition, Dolly Parton sings this song much better, although she also did a lot of plastic surgery.
@Pujardoff1 This may be the most mean-spirited and stupidest comment ever seen on YouTube-- which is an amazing feat considering the competition.
Without addressing your other childish and inane comments, EmmyLou's stellar cover is clearly right up there with Dolly's classic original. Of course, the 368 "likes" as of today may not share the superb judgment of you and the four others who disliked this rendition.
First of all, EmmyLou's is the original version. Dolly had not recorded or released this song until AFTER Emmylou did. Believe me, I did the research. Most people know Emmylou's version, because hers is the one that was released as a single. Not many people know Dolly wrote it.
Second of all, I think its really childish of everyone to fight over whos version is better. Emmylou and Dolly... they are both amazing. I personally love both version

Yes a great dolly song. I'm gonna look for one they sang together now.How lucky we are to live in the era where a blond with big boobs is our best poet!!!!
There are many people (especially today) who long to be and work towards being a great singer songwriter. Emmylou was born to do it and was handed down to us from the heavens!
Emmy must have lived next door to my house. To wake up and find that mommy has left. More than half a century has come and gone and still there is a scar that will never heal. Mom? Where did you go? I look for you still.
I became a fan of her when I knew her. "The Ballad of Sally Rose". Loved her because she is genuine. A very personnal voice, unique interpretations. This song ("To daddy") sung by her does not sound "rebellious" as sung by Dolly Parton : just the story of the true love of a woman to her children, and who. when she was not necessary anymore, chose it was her turn to live happiness. Deeply touching.
"being took for granted, was a thing she she accepted" ... sadly, the story of my mom's relationship with my father.
