  • "being took for granted, was a thing she she accepted" ... sadly, the story of my mom's relationship with my father.

  • This song was designed to make you cry. If it doesnt, youre not human.

  • Just beautiful - what more can you say -

  • Emmylou is great, whether backed by a band or performing solo. Another super performance!

  • Just listen, how can you argue after hearing this beautiful song ?

  • Awesome song. It tells the story of women who are physically or/and emotionally maltreated by husbands. I reckon it will be sung and enjoyed by generations to come.

  • My dad's better than your dad! LOL Come on (adults?) the whole music scene is subjective.....Personally, I reckon my version of this - in the bath on a Friday night - is the best. But I may be biased.......

  • This is an incredible song. BOTH versions are amazing. I do not think they can compete with eachother. Dolly wrote the song, but Emmylou recorded and released it first. Both versions are stellar. Both versions will bring a tear to your eye. And all you Dolly fans? Dolly wouldn't like you being mean to Emmylou's fans. Or trashing Emmylou. She herself loves Emmylou and obviously thinks highly of her and her music... otherwise Emmylou wouldnt have been able to record this song.

  • fuck u and your add

  • although, i'm 30 years old, but when i first heard her songs, i feel charming, and the her voice let me memoriesed my childhood

  • @476RIGEL Nope sorry, that title goes to the one and only Dolly Parton, who incidentally wrote this song.

Emmylou is good but not quite as good as Dolly.

  • Perhaps Joplin copied EmmyLou...who was a young legend already! but Emmy has such a voice and delivery that she is revered by top country stars and has been for most of my 70 years.

  • Does it not remind you to Me and Bobby McGee from Janis Joplin, or does it?

  • she was a very beautiful woman to that time.

  • @SuperstarX

She's pretty damn hot right now.

  • @SeattleTennisPlayer for you, but not for me! She has grey hair now and that is not attractive! Also, she has an old face! In this performance from 1980, she's damn hot!

  • This song is an Anthem to my parents...Mom left and never came home...

  • Yes I am

  • Thank you for posting this. This was taken from an old VHS tape, right? I can tell by the distortion at the bottom of the frame. That would not be seen on an old TV because it is in the over-scan area beyond the viewable portion of the tube. Check to see if your software has settings to crop the edges before encoding. That would be the thing to do. Peace.

  • Dolly Parton wrote this song for Emmylou, and she also sings a version of it, but sometimes a song can only be done justice by one artist. In this case, that artist is Emmylou. She masters it, and only the plaintive tones of her unique sound can evoke the emotion embedded in this sad tale.

  • Nobody brings a lump in your throat or a tear to your eye like Emmylou does.

  • para o meu pai que esta nas pradarias eternas e que gosto muito..

  • EMMY COULD SING TWINKLE-TWINKLE LITTLE STAR AND MY KNEES WOULD STILL TURN TO JELLY

  • wow just a great singer, a guitar and a microphone how fantastic, guess somewhere along the way we lost it

  • @motney555 Its still there - we just need to look harder, thats all.....

  • Im sorry but Dolly verison is better!

  • @couponinganddolly You typed your opinion up as if it were fact... shitbird.

  • @UntilWeMeetAgainVic

It is... I'm just kidding. I'm sorry apologize I didn't mean to sound that way! that is just my opinion.

  • @couponinganddolly Are you some sort of Dolly nut-job?

  • I saw Emmylou Harris &her great band in NYC in 1982, but I misplaced the film! I'd love to find it because I went as close to the stage as I could get, and took some wonderful close-ups of EmmyLou! It was at the Doctor Pepper Music Festival! I know they're somewhere possibly--I do hope I find them someday downstairs! BobbyK

  • If there is a finer Female Country music singer, please do tell.

Been a fan since 1970, I still have the "Gliding Bird" vinyl.

  • Sadly, I've lived this song. It turns me into a bucket of tears every time...

  • @morgaffi *hugs*

  • Written by Dolly Parton and performed by EmmyLou,what more could you ask for?

  • @TheLayla420 Ummm, for it to be sang by Dolly Parton as well ?

I do like both versions i have to admit.

  • 6 dislikes, I guess they hate puppies too

  • @u4getit Pretty funny, they hate puppies, too. Right on!!

  • Wonderful performance from a most beautiful woman; inside and out.

  • great music by a great artist. Life is good. Thanks Emmylou.

    The Sovereign Bohemian

  • Classic.

  • Emmylou has the most beautiful female voice I have ever heard.

  • @Ruthy1952 I agree with you--but I'd place singers like Alison Krauss, etc, in that class, too, especially concerning a country-bluegrass-rock genre! Sincerely, BobbyK P.S. I have most of Emmylou's albums that were reissued as CD's!!!

  • Emmylou Harris singing a Dolly Parton song. Things don't get much better than that.

  • I`ve heard this song before a hundred times or so, but it still makes me cry and I can`t hold it. Thanks EMMYLOU for this masterpiece

  • Guarantee you... there's some Cherokee in her background somewhere. What a classic beauty.

  • @joepilot48 They all consider themselves descendants of the Cherokee, Wichita and all that rubbish. What I see, it's an unnatural shape of the nose - an obvious result of plastic surgery. In addition, Dolly Parton sings this song much better, although she also did a lot of plastic surgery.

  • @Pujardoff1 Thats because she didn't want to grow old as ugly as you I guess, The truth hurts- sorry.

  • @Pujardoff1 What are you talking about? Nobody is that stupid.

  • @Pujardoff1 This may be the most mean-spirited and stupidest comment ever seen on YouTube-- which is an amazing feat considering the competition.

Without addressing your other childish and inane comments, EmmyLou's stellar cover is clearly right up there with Dolly's classic original. Of course, the 368 "likes" as of today may not share the superb judgment of you and the four others who disliked this rendition.

  • @SupremelyHip Okay this is to everyone on here.

First of all, EmmyLou's is the original version. Dolly had not recorded or released this song until AFTER Emmylou did. Believe me, I did the research. Most people know Emmylou's version, because hers is the one that was released as a single. Not many people know Dolly wrote it.

Second of all, I think its really childish of everyone to fight over whos version is better. Emmylou and Dolly... they are both amazing. I personally love both version

  • @SupremelyHip Sorry about the double post.

  • My Whitedove once Lived this same said Story....Lonewolf....Cheer's Emmy!

  • where did music like this go?

  • How can anyone give this a “Don’t like”?

  • A good Woman is Whitedove...Lonewolf love's you!

  • She brings tears to my eyes with all her beauty and love.

    old texas guy

  • thank,you,hony,for,this,music,never,heard,angel

  • @ wakeboardbob: Better late than never! Emmylou has the voice of an angel.

  • Im 42 and just discovered Emmylou :-)

  • @wakeboardbob So glad you found her...she's been my hero since I was 40! (64 now....she just gets better with time!)

  • Amazing Woman ,

    Amazing Voice . :)

  • dont get music like this any more, pity

  • Oh my word.! How many of us can relate to this song. I sure can. My Dad never showed my Mom or any of us kids any kind of love.

  • Yes a great dolly song. I'm gonna look for one they sang together now.How lucky we are to live in the era where a blond with big boobs is our best poet!!!!

  • Dedicato a chi e' lassu' nel cielo .......e amava tanto questa canzone ...la tua chitarra c'e' ancora .....ma io non la so suonare

  • The biggest "tearjerker" ever.

  • Emmy's perfect here.. Beautiful!! BREATH TAKING!!!

  • Thanks Momma, love ya always.

  • a beautiful Dolly Parton song.....made even more angelic by the Voice of Emmylou Harris......Emmylou is a treasure to us all

  • Die Frau ist toll ♥

  • This is a song written by Dolly, about the mistreatment she saw as a child.

  • this reminds me of my momma and daddy

  • @Ellianaist

And me... it reminds me on myself. Shame!

  • This reminds me of my Daddy and momma!!!

  • There are many people (especially today) who long to be and work towards being a great singer songwriter. Emmylou was born to do it and was handed down to us from the heavens!

  • OMG! This song takes me back. I love it!

  • Amazing i heard this when i was a kid and now i have kids of my own and love it!!!

  • My mom stuck with my daddy. She had that kind of grace .

  • Emmy must have lived next door to my house. To wake up and find that mommy has left. More than half a century has come and gone and still there is a scar that will never heal. Mom? Where did you go? I look for you still.

  • Emmylou sure was a pretty lady back then. Come to think of it she hasn't lost much thorugh the years. And what a voice, like an angel.

  • @mondo78 dang I should check my spelling better before I post "thorugh" LOL

  • My life

  • One of my favourites...

Da werden Jugenderinnergungen wach. "Quartermoon in a Ten Cent Town" war die zweite LP, die ich mir gekauft habe.

Meine erste LP war von Status Quo ;)

  • I became a fan of her when I knew her. "The Ballad of Sally Rose". Loved her because she is genuine. A very personnal voice, unique interpretations. This song ("To daddy") sung by her does not sound "rebellious" as sung by Dolly Parton : just the story of the true love of a woman to her children, and who. when she was not necessary anymore, chose it was her turn to live happiness. Deeply touching.

  • Emmylou, the best.

  • one of my favorites and love Emmylou Harris,s voice

    thanks for sharing

    cheers

  • When I was little, this song made me think of my Momma. When Daddy died years later, I realized just how strong she had been over the years.

  • @sixinabag it always reminded me of my mom..she

stayed & they are still hangin on! thank God, dad

    changed his awful ways!!

  • @sixinabag I'll bet you passed that strength on to your children.. Stay strong, partner..

  • Wow - takes me back. Just in case anyone forgets how good she really is......just listen to this.

  • rightly said i lived this...funny and still to this day i still do

  • since more than 30 years for me the best musican in the world!

  • Beautiful woman and an even more beautiful voice.
