After the success of our Free Fallin' cover MartonMusic has now tried covering one of our absolute favorite songs which is "Slow Dancing In A Burning Room", scootch on over to our channel to listen to us trying to make our childhood dream come true. All views / comments / ratings / subscribtions would make such a contribution it's unreal, thank you for even reading this!
He's got a great sound on this track! Soulful...melts my heart...Johnny just so you know I could never forget about you! I loved battle studies..was totally waiting for it to come out! Bring on more music excited to see what's in store!
The guy's a brilliant musician but I just can't get into him. I just find his voice really annoying. Can't really put my finger on it but he does write some fantastic music.
Guys i think you're reading into this a little too deeply. I really don't think he made this album to try to be different or challenge the public to think diffently of him. I just think he writes what he feels and these songs on Battle Studies just so happened to be what he was feeling from 2006 to 2009...
I still listen to Continuum after 4yrs and BS i quited listening to it after 6 mths. It's a different album for sure. Insipid and deslexic. Who Says is pretentiously rebel while Edge of Desire (1 of his best songs ever) is full of emotional depth. Crossroads presence is a futile link tribute to his blues background. Assassin's solo; an oasis in a guitar desert. Heartbreak Warfare: the tuning fork in his new aesthetics but not accomplished in other songs. He got lost in trying to be different
There are changes for the better or changes for the worst. BS isn't questioned due to the lack of continuity. Continuum had nothing to do with his previous albuns, yet his best, while BS is his worst album. There's expectation over his quality, not over his music variations. JM was becoming THE pioneer of a blues comeback, he was being more credited for his lyrics and MOSTLY for his guitar skills (a genius). But w/ BS he blew it for Change/Originality sake. However he's still a superhero for me.
this song and "do you know me", i'ld say are the best songs on the album. who says was pretty good to. I really didn't like a lot of the electric guitar on battle studies.
Ok i love john mayer even i've got a tattoo of slow dancing in a burning room in my neck. But You have to recognize that this is the worst album that he have ever done.
Too comercial. Truly it's not GOOD music like continuum
@dizzack I know he knows that singing is his weakness so if he tuned down the guitar it would make the voice better so he could concentrate on guitar even more.
Whatever people say about his private life, there's absolutely no denying that he's a musical jewel, through and through. This version is breathtaking.
I don't want to be THAT guy who brings this up but... listen to this song and Taylor Swift's, 'Dear John'. The songs are like two bookends, although Edge of Desire was probably written long before John even met Taylor.
Totally agree with Middsyuwe... I hated it... at first, second... but then in a random moment my boyfriend put assassin playing, and "it all clicked". But Edge of Desire totally killed me, its so amazing, it fulfills so many emotions of mine, whether im happy or not. and shows exactly how i felt some time ago...I love it. Love this man. He's amazing, awesome, super. Fantastic. Keep on doing that JM!!
john tweeted this when the album came out... it was recorded in his apartment and he said "look for the iphone ring"... its around 0:21 if you litson closely... i love this song... keep rockin JM
A lot of people dont like battle studies cause its not like his previous stuff. Well, your right, its not like his previous stuff at all. He has never come out with back to back similar albums yet in his career. Why would he do it now. He keeps changing to challenge what people categorize him as. Thats why i love his music
@robertsfootball74 With that said, he admits himself he is not proud of this album and feels as though he hasnt done what he set out to do in the first place. Im only slightly obsessed with his music and talent. Regardless of what people say. They need to stop calling him a dbag and being jealous, and realize the man is one of the best guitarists to walk this earth.
@robertsfootball74 Some people don't like Battle Studies because it's not as good as Continuum, which was a brilliant record. Battle Studies (I'll just call it "B.S.") was written when John was more concerned with sleeping with celebrities and tweeting something clever every 5 minutes. He wasn't focused on the music - and he's pretty much acknowledged that at this point. B. S. has some pleasant tracks, but, overall, it's shallow compared to earlier work. Looking forward to the next one.
@gegloff1 Continuum is my favorite album of all time, and doesn't have a bad song on it. BS isn't the same, but Edge of Desire and War of My Life are 2 of my favorite songs of his, period. I'm agreeing with you just in case I come off hostile? I do think Battle Studies is better than most people give credit, though.
@IThinkThereforeIAm I've seen some really critical John Mayer haters over the years. Most people seem to either love him or hate him. I saw him at the Hollywood Bowl last year and loved the show. He played your 2 favorites and it sounded great.
@IThinkThereforeIAm That sucks for you, BUT to JMs credit, it shows that he changes his set list and keeps it interesting (for himself, the band, and the audience who follows him around like Phish fans)
@robertsfootball74 i disagree that he changes to "challenge" what people categorize him as. he's an artist, and he's a person. people change... and an artist's method of self expression will change as they change. i'm an artist, and i've noticed a significant change within my own expression in just a few years' time. i see your point, but i disagree as to why his music has change; clearly it is not to defend his "genre."
I LOVE this version! I love the other one too, but it's just something about the way he plays the acoustic and the patterns of the notes it just kind of puts me in a trance, if that makes sence? Idk but I fall in love with his voice, it just makes me so smitten :) haha I swear I'm not this weird, I just love this song and the mood it puts me in...
Love it. Love the album. (errrr..CD) This is my favorite song on the album. And listening to Mr. Mayer play crossroads is amazing! You know, it took me forever to even listen to his songs/music. Finally I thought, Ok, lets see what all the hoopla surrounding John Mayer is about. I'm totally hooked. Not a day goes by that I don't listen to his music.Thank you for your songs :-)
why does everyone say that they don't like battle studies??!!...it's so amazing..! really... i just love it...though have to say that nothing tops the Continuum record...but this is one of his best albums along with Room for squares... ! and what i really love is how his sound progressed... he started of with some popish acoustic stuff in his first album and gradually he turned more serious to a more blues sound/ acoustic.... love it
very sweet and played correctly. search youtube for "edge of desire ariemma" considering the work you put into this you will appreciate the recommendation. Keep playing dude you sound great.
Oh man, when I hear the acoustic versions I always go "Ahhhh, there's the John Mayer we all remember. He's just twisting things up a little." Thanks John for the memories.
I heard this version of Edge of Desire when JM posted it on his onefortyplus page. I have been wishing that I could have it! Thank you so much for posting this one! This is my favorite song from Battle Studies.
Check out my channel to see a great moment from the 2010 Winter Tour in Philly!
Damn, John.......your lyrics can just talk to my heart and make me feel like you were walking in my shoes when you wrote the song........not just this one, but quite a few others also!
well the interviews are one obvious place to look at. But i had the unfortunate privilege of meeting him at VIP room in st Tropez where all the rich douchebags go.
@bjhMus1C you are making the biggest judgmental assumptions by not even knowing who the fuck he is and by assuming I am making judgmental assumptions. great musician no doubt, big dickhead nonetheless. Hitler, great military commander, big war criminal nonetheless.
@nutcrakerz i didn't make any assumptions about him.. and im not "assuming" you're making judgmental assumptions. look down in the comments below, i saw you fucking make them. it's not an "assumption", more so a fact.
This is a great version. I missed my window to dwnld this version from John's site. anyone out there have it that can email it to me or kno where I can. Thnx so much
There´s a program that turns youtube vids into mp3s. You can google it. And in this case, I think it´s perfectly okay to use, because John wrote he wanted it to be a present. And this version, in my ears, is even a lot sweeter than the album version.
he published an article on one of his blogs and said he wanted to broadcast this as a present to his fans. look for 'Fourty Plus John Mayer blog' to find the said message board.
I didn't like this album AT ALL when I first heard it, but I really wanted to like it. So, I played the album again, and again, and again. Then, at one point (can't remember the point exactly) it all clicked. It might have been this song that completed it for me. The only issue, if I have one, is his version of 'Crossroads.' Why, oh why is it on the album? Come to Thailand JM. You're awesome.
Totally agree, Crossroads is a pointless song on the album. He should have gone with "Taking On Water" it's fantastic and would have worked perfectly on the album.
I disagree, though I understand where you're coming from. The taste with which he covered an amazing Cream song is just unbelievable. Of course, I'm biased, it's one of my favorite Clapton songs.
I didnt mean the song itself is pointless. I think its a great tune I meant on this album it sort of sounds pointless and to be honest I persoanlly dont think his interpretation is that good...just my opinion and trust me im a huge fan. Listen to Taking On Water - would have been perfect in Crossroads position.
Couldn't agree more. I didn't find any reason for "all we ever do is say goodbye". nothing about that song seemed relevant. Taking on Water a million times better.
All I can figure is that he plans for Taking On Water to be one of his Live only songs. Who knows, maybe we will see it in a DVD soon. I did like "All We Ever Do Is Say Goodbye" though. I find it very relevant to something Ive went through.
@Middsyuwe I totally felt the same way. I was disappointed when I first listened, and after like 4 or 5 plays I still felt let down. But I go back and really listen to it and try to like it, and it clicked, like you said. Now love the album, everything about it.
I actually enjoy that cover because its actually different than the original crossroads. Im tired of hearing the same old cover of that song by every band out there. Johns was actually unique.
@Middsyuwe I totally forgot crossroads was even on the album until I read your comment! Wow! Apparently he regrets that choice now, did he ever even play it on tour?? yuck.
@Middsyuwe I watched a concert put on by Eric Clapton and John played this song with him and you could tell by the look on John's face he was in complete awe that he was playing with Clapton (and rightly so!), who is one of the greatest guitarists of all time, IMO, and John's bluesy sound reminds me of Clapton and George Harrison, who is another great. I think he wanted it on an album so he put it on there. I loved this album from start to end 1st time I heard it! This is THE song...
@Middsyuwe that is EXACTLY how I felt about the album.. I put it in my car and listened to it over and over and at some point I just couldn't stop listening to it. ^ months later and it's still the only cd in my car. I'm still not tired of it..
@Middsyuwe Same thing happened to me! I had to listen over and over and it just grew on me... And I feel the same way about crossroads. I still skip it. hehe I got to see him live here in Vancouver in the front row and it was the best show ever! He actually gave me the setlist at the end of the concert. He´s awesome!
My special title for this song is the panty dropper...

@bjhMus1C
well the interviews are one obvious place to look at. But i had the unfortunate privilege of meeting him at VIP room in st Tropez where all the rich douchebags go.
nutcrakerz 10 months ago
@nutcrakerz lol, yeah.. right. even if you did, doesn't mean that you know the guy. fuck off with your judgmental assumptions.
bjhMus1C 10 months ago
@bjhMus1C you are making the biggest judgmental assumptions by not even knowing who the fuck he is and by assuming I am making judgmental assumptions. great musician no doubt, big dickhead nonetheless. Hitler, great military commander, big war criminal nonetheless.
nutcrakerz 10 months ago
@nutcrakerz i didn't make any assumptions about him.. and im not "assuming" you're making judgmental assumptions. look down in the comments below, i saw you fucking make them. it's not an "assumption", more so a fact.

@thalitavieira he actually put this up somewhere on his website to download for free... you might want to try looking at that and his blog

You're awesome.

same here!

same thing happend with me. and your right about this song completing it.

Totally agree, Crossroads is a pointless song on the album. He should have gone with "Taking On Water" it's fantastic and would have worked perfectly on the album.
DanC221 2 years ago 7
I disagree, though I understand where you're coming from. The taste with which he covered an amazing Cream song is just unbelievable. Of course, I'm biased, it's one of my favorite Clapton songs.

He actually covered the Robert Johnson version. But I suppose it's all the same thing at the end of the day.
thejoshlee22 2 years ago
@AnimusBehemoth you do know its not a clapton song right?
l2read 2 years ago
@DanC221 Crossroads is not pointless...It obviously means alot to Mayer to be able to play his idols songs on his cd's
brads0014 2 years ago 4
I didnt mean the song itself is pointless. I think its a great tune I meant on this album it sort of sounds pointless and to be honest I persoanlly dont think his interpretation is that good...just my opinion and trust me im a huge fan. Listen to Taking On Water - would have been perfect in Crossroads position.
DanC221 2 years ago 4
I agree, its a bit weird on the album, but live its incredible
PeterZeeke 2 years ago
I actually like his version of crossroads. But I do agree, Taking On Water SHOULD have been on that albulm.
Levidamanguitar 2 years ago 6
Couldn't agree more. I didn't find any reason for "all we ever do is say goodbye". nothing about that song seemed relevant. Taking on Water a million times better.
Derekober 2 years ago
All I can figure is that he plans for Taking On Water to be one of his Live only songs. Who knows, maybe we will see it in a DVD soon. I did like "All We Ever Do Is Say Goodbye" though. I find it very relevant to something Ive went through.
Levidamanguitar 2 years ago
how about split screen sadness? i reckon it would have fit perfectly
jerowenlugte 1 year ago 3
Totally agree!
melodiebilodeau 2 years ago
@DanC221 Maybe it was a trick by John. He said that he liked to surprise people. He sure did that putting crossroads on.

@Middsyuwe funny. ive had this a while, and only like two days did i really get it too. im going to manila to watch him in concert.

@Middsyuwe I totally felt the same way. I was disappointed when I first listened, and after like 4 or 5 plays I still felt let down. But I go back and really listen to it and try to like it, and it clicked, like you said. Now love the album, everything about it.
alexrempel12390 1 year ago
@Middsyuwe
I actually enjoy that cover because its actually different than the original crossroads. Im tired of hearing the same old cover of that song by every band out there. Johns was actually unique.
Levidamanguitar 1 year ago
@Middsyuwe I'm totally agree, except for the part of 'crossroads', because I think that song is great.
With this song, I fell in love with the album... even though I didn't like it at first.
And so as you, I'd love that he come to my country (Chile !!)

@Middsyuwe My friend was saying this too. I was saying that it's because it's not just him, it's the JM trio.

@Middsyuwe I totally forgot crossroads was even on the album until I read your comment! Wow! Apparently he regrets that choice now, did he ever even play it on tour?? yuck.
dollsizedpistol 1 year ago
@Middsyuwe I watched a concert put on by Eric Clapton and John played this song with him and you could tell by the look on John's face he was in complete awe that he was playing with Clapton (and rightly so!), who is one of the greatest guitarists of all time, IMO, and John's bluesy sound reminds me of Clapton and George Harrison, who is another great. I think he wanted it on an album so he put it on there. I loved this album from start to end 1st time I heard it! This is THE song...

@ebbette talking about Edge Of Desire as THE song...

@Middsyuwe that is EXACTLY how I felt about the album.. I put it in my car and listened to it over and over and at some point I just couldn't stop listening to it. ^ months later and it's still the only cd in my car. I'm still not tired of it..

@Middsyuwe Wow I couldn't agree more with every word of this post. So true.

@jubiscleusa171 cross roads is an amazing song, but it did take me awhile to really appreciate "edge of desire" now I love it haha
