It's a shame about the acoustics tbh, I enjoyed your style and virtuosity though. Maybe you couldve lightened up on the pedal, considering that the acoustics were making it sound all smudged and messy as it was, however.
uummm i no this is a little random but umm all u pro-ass muso's out there how much pedal is nessecary cause whenever i play this i either feel as though im using too much or too little :S
There should be a bigger pause between 1:42 and 1:43, because in the music, the railroad tracks mean to briefly pause. Other than that the piece sounded great, besides the poor acoustics which obviously wouldn't be your fault.
Well perhaps the editor decided to put that in, because I listened to a recording of Gershwin himself playing this, and he didn't pause at that section either. Unless Gershwin wanted to keep that an option for the interpreter who would be playing the piece. The way Gershwin played it, was made it more classical sounding.
go back and learn the tripplet modulation patches slower so that when they are performed faster they are much clear and the bass is too over powerring in that same part. other than that keep the work up
im playing this song for my solo & ensemble competition A piece. u were really good at this! im still going SUPER slow, like 64 to the eighth note, but i hope i'll get a lot faster like u! luckily the competition is at the end of Feb. though, so i still have time! great job!
Cut down on the pedaling. Everything else is good, the tempo, accuracy, feeling, but the pedaling ruins the piece. Remember that this piece is rhythm, and nothing else,so there is really little use for pedaling other than connecting the long notes. It gets very blurry as you go through the fast parts, so try to limit that. Try your best to keep a jazzy feel to it. Good luck, you have alot of potential.
@cheapmoms I think the pedal is fine. I am a beginner/intermediate pianist and it sounds like the way you pedaled was in such a way that you outlined the phrases, which i think is appropriate for this piece. I think cheapmoms is incorrectly perceiving the pedal as reverb, it which case it is spacey as it looks like you recorded this in a concert hall. Anyways, I liked your performance a lot!
@Filmmaker920 i think it's YOU who cant tell the difference between pedal and reverb. by the end of the piece, its just one big cloud of noise cuz his foot's glued to the pedal.
excellent, dont listen to these other comments, its good at the speed you played it.. other people try to play it too fast and it sounds awful. Also the reason it sounds like that is because its a 9'ft grand.. this is quality sound people enjoy it.
despite the acoustics (maybe the pedal?) which made it sound like there were some wrong notes in the middle, this was still one of the better performances i've seen on youtube. I esp. like the last 1/3.
May I suggest keeping the lid closed when you play in that room in the future? I'm not exactly the best at acoustics, but it seems like it would be better that way.
Wow! Sounds like a big blur! I'm sure it's the room, but maybe too much pedal? In a room like that I probably wouldn't use ANY pedal. This makes me want to play this Prelude again, maybe I'll record it . . .
This is really good playing, though I'm sure the score doesn't ask for THAT much pedal. It's like you were kind of using it to keep the beat, instead of to create a certain kind of sound. Well done all the same, it's not the easiest piece
teehee i spotted a few mistakes. good job though, its pretty hard to get through the whole thing and keep the same pace and rhythm and perhaps more of a slur would be better. and argh the pedal is so noisy! good job though ^^

this guy is terrible. Reminds me of a cow just getting shocked every now and then and speeding up.

too much pedal - the acoustics anyway will reflect the sound from the building...pedal is to a minimum

WAY too much pedal. And a tad too slow.

The length of the *caesura* is variable. Even in classical music, it is not set, and don't forget, this is jazz.

I don't think the tempo is inappropriate. However, I think more energy and rhythmic articulation would really make this piece better.

It's refreshing to see something by Gershwin played like this. Don't read the name Gershwin and then say "Oh this must be jazz."
incrediblub 4 years ago
Too slow, more jazz next time, please. But not bad:-)
Centrotoma 4 years ago
I agree 100 percent. Gershwin wrote this with jazz in mind.

The score I've got has pedaling where he's got it as well. It's weird and sounds all smushed when you add it IMHO =s
Fishdude404 4 years ago
Nice, but you kinda rushed through it if you want an honest opinion. How did you get a chance to play an 11' steinway though??

Hey! I've played that before. I like your interpretation. :) 5 stars from me.
