  • Tundra/Desert

  • Comment removed

  • I remember paying 6 bucks in Seattle. Their newest release was lonesome crowded west.

  • you were at this show!? lucky!

  • but how??

  • what guitar is that

  • its a Wicks

  • noooo... im pretty sure he couldnt aford a 5,000 guitar in 1998, and it looks nothing like wicks anyways.

  • oops he plays wicks now srry

  • its a westone. im not sure on the model though

  • Westone Spectrum III I believe, I dunno though it could be the Spectrum I. :)

  • he is such and innovative guitarist, completely unique, completely underrated.

  • fucking EPIC

GOD I SWEAR THIS IS THE MOST AMAZING BAND AND THE GREATEST FUCKING SONG EVER!!! EARGASM AFTER EARGASM!!! AND ISAAC SINGING INTO HIS GUITAR!!! GAH!!!

  • issac brock= elvis presley

  • Isaac Brock > elvis presley

  • haha agreed. actually i dont even really like elvis, issac just reminds me of him in this vdeo

  • i think i just witnessed rock and roll.

  • tundra is fuckin epic, i was at this show, rckcndy seatle

  • marry me.

    Now.

    &&thank you.

  • We get too creative.

  • AHHH Mr. Brock i love you

  • thank god for old modest mouse videos! can people please link me to more of this, everything before Good News?

  • We are all going to that gig. I'm getting started on the time machine. Everyone is invited!

  • hell yeah

    tundra/desert

  • totally agree

  • i agree.

  • i thnk (because its westone guitars) he uses the westone pickups that came witht them. or we could just agree that isaac brock is frickin awesome!

  • a Goat raped your mother

  • I would love to see the whole concert!

  • I love him.

I wish they still played at venues this small!

  • this sounds way better live than the real thing

  • damn right.

  • how come it seems like u can never hear the bass?

  • What song is this?

  • Tundra/Desert

It's off This Is a Long Drive for Someone with Nothing to Think About

    It's also on Interstate 8

  • That guitar he is using is not LTD it is a Westone guitar its a shred guitar used in the 80's and I have no clue how Isaac chose a "metal" guitar for indie rock :p

  • Thanks to information you have just given I finally know all the guitars Isaac has used!

  • will you list them for me...hah

  • fender jagstang, fernandes retro rocket, westone corsair, wicks guitars, (i thinksome form of a fender showmaster, and for his banjo a goldtone banjo ( but im pretty sure he just bought another one. oh and a koll duo glide and 12-string!

  • he's isaac brock, that's how...

    geeeeeeeeeez.

  • I contacted Brian Wicks recently and he says the Isaac uses a Grescth filtertron humbuckler in the bridge position and DiMarzio 60's single coil pickups in the neck position, but in the pictures of him with LTD he ues two humbucklers.

  • actually it's just humbuckers... not humbucklers.

  • so has anyone actually determined how exactly he gets the guitar to pick up his voice? like what kind of pickups he uses? because it cant be his voice making the strings vibrate, because if u notice, hes trying pretty hard to keep them muted, to keep the feedback down i guess.

  • it's a gretsch filtertron and i think he was using a Zvex pedal but i cant be totally sure. i'm not sure if he even has filtertrons in that particular guitar.

  • i know brian wicks said he used gretsch filtertron on his wicks guitars but how he did it here is a mystery ( at least to me)

  • it is to EVERYONE... except isaac brock.

They could just be Standard Ibanez pic-ups.

  • i fuckin love this song. i played it backwards once and it says weird shit

  • Daaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaamn.

I miss those days of MM.

  • I've got that show on dvd it's really awsome.

  • hey man are you hardcore modest mouse fan on myspace?!?!?! i'm willfull suspension of disbeleif!! (the guy in the pic with alan goldsher.) thats so cool how i found you on youtube. LOL

  • hahah actually yeah it is "dumbass" it was put out before

"everywhere and his nasty parlor tricks" and then it was re released, they remastered everything and put on some tracks from bbc radio. so maybe you should get your facts straight before you put down someone fucker

  • this veidoe is fuckibng awsome

  • Thats because hes in his thirties and he stopped doing coke.

Oh well, hes still the best musician of all-time.

  • he doesnt quite seem to play with the same intensity anymore...

  • The pickups on the guitar act as a mic.

  • Actually when you yell right next to the strings of a guitar it vibrates the strings so that the pickup can indeed pick it up and then be amplified through your amp.

  • no, it doesnt work. your voice isn't loud enough to project a vibration that will shake the strings hard enough to be amplified by the pickups.

he has a special kind i think but im not sure what kind.

  • so i glad that i am not the only person in the world that continues to watch this clip

  • Those kids in the front don't even know that they are witnessing history.

  • ironic considering he is atheist

  • Just saw them last night. The most amazing show of all time.

  • does isaac ever do the yelling in the pick-up thing anymore??

  • yea he did it at a show i saw a couple months ago in NYC

  • Just did it last night.

  • yeah.

  • me too

  • FUCK YES!!!

  • i was at this show, it was off the hook, one of mouse's best

  • oldschool modest mouse. sweet.

  • What is the name of this song and what album is it from???

  • tundra/desert from Interstate 8 and their first LP

  • no, he screamed into the pickups

  • What is that thing that he uses that's on the bridge and he uses for his tremelo

  • accually i found out that now uses a brand called Wicks Guitars you should check it he makes cutom guitars and can repair just about any problem with the guitar

  • I think he uses a PRS guitar nowadays.

  • no, he bought like 5 wicks. i think they're more expensive than PRS and they are custom made to your liking. they start out at something like 3500 and that just bottom of the line.

  • what kind of guitar does isaac use nowadays?

  • what kind of guitar does isaac use now

  • awesome!

  • this is amazing. some of you kids may say that you can't play wasted...i think that you kids don't get drunk and play music...so yeah...shut up. i also saw the strokes not too long back....everyone was fucked...and it was probably the best live show i've ever seen...

  • GOD the good ole days.... DESERT TUNDRA FUCK SHIT

  • nah.. not really ppl play preety good wasted and high.. isnt that waht punk is all about? it wouldnt be a concert if the lead singer isnt on drugs or piss drunk

  • no kid, thats not what punk is about, maybe for the fashion punked out casualties. your a goddamn idiot if you think punk music was about getting wasted or shooting up or smoking pot. it was about destroying music really. making it something different.

  • isaac would constantly perform wasted...i don't know, maybe not. awesome video either way

  • and to think i like their new album. u cant do this on stage with normal music

  • Actually, I've heard that the guitar he was using around that time had microphonic pickups, not the usual pickups you're referring to.

Also, I was able to pick up some voice and whistles with alnico humbuckers and enough volume and tone. It wasn't like MM though. :P

  • he's high and wasted

  • yup the way music is soposto be.

  • its how i am right now

  • yeah brah high and wasted, 420, so cool.... youre an idiot kid. isaac would be ashamed to admit that probably. he didnt get "high and wasted" to play music. he did that out of his spare time probably. it mightve helped, but im sure if you wouldve gone up to him at as how and been like "duuuudeee, like, lets get wasted," hed probably laugh atyou and tell you to go home

  • no, he'd be like "hell yea dude. you got the beer?"

  • skeeskee

  • Are you sure this is 5/11/98? I saw them on 5/10/98 and it sure looks a lot like the venue (which was Tramps at the time).

  • no this is most indefinately on 5/8/98. it's tundra/desert.

  • Most indefinitely? I'd say so! Oh well, I guess no one can be sure when the hell this video is from. I saw them on 5/10/98 and 11/7/98 on 51 West 21st St. in NYC, the place was called Tramps. In my opinion that is the venue they are playing in. The walls in the place were painted black like that and the stage is in the same spot. Also, they played Tundra/Desert at basically every show back then. So we have some people who think it's 5/8/98, 5/11/98 and I'll go with 5/10/98. The mystery deepens.

  • well i have the mp3 of the 5/8 show so either the date is off or it's a different show with the same exact music...

    1 in a million chance.

so i would say it is 5/8.

  • How'd you get an mp3 of a show from 98? That's cool. Please share where that was posted. Thanks.

  • it's a really cool site, they have a bunch of MP3's and rare recordings of modest mouse and only modest mouse.

    it's here...

    modestmouselive[DOT]zeromethos[DOT]com

  • that sight is primo thx!!

  • No problem.

  • Is it a one in a million chance that your deaf as fuck? I'm sorry, I apologize, but i have that show as well; clearly, undeniably not -this- show. Note that in the Amherst mp3 which you speak of, there is no descernable pause where Isaac loses his shoulder strap, as he does in this video. Jesus falacious Christ man, don't say things that aren't fucking truthful. I hate that shit... RE: Jeremy's drumming? I agree with you there. He's completely underrated.

  • actually it's just an mp3 and it's just a band(a great band) so i don't really feel obligated to be completely truthful and look at every last sign as to what show this is so.... yea, i don't give a shit.

  • And yes, there were people there unaware of what they were witnessing. I can assure you though there was also a small group of us who were living it up while it was still there. Once Lonesome Crowded West came out every fan using their noodle new it'd be the last tour they'd play places that small. The album was just too good.

  • i was at this show!!!we were smokin' crack

  • Would it matter? Modest Mouse rocks.

  • better then anything u like

  • issac is a king among men

  • i hope there is a modest mouse show soon

  • dude---BANG MUSIC FEST BABY BABY! MIAMI

  • ^^^this guy must be blueddha's unborn son. lol.

  • this songs just a bunch of random noises

  • screaming into the pick ups...awesome. and yeah, the moon and antarctica was epic.

  • screaming into the pickups only works well with baby monitors and cell phones..? It works especially good with wireless patch cords.

  • my favorite part is when he screams into the pickups. what a creative guy.

  • OMG I WISH I WAS THERE!!!!

... Good news for People who love bad news was thier worst album... The Mood and antartica was better... hopefully 'I was dead before the ship even sank" would be good XD

  • OMG I JUST CREAMED MY PANTS

  • thia song makes me wanna dance! love modest mousssseeeee.

  • matured as in matured. trees mature. the earth matures. we mature. but we don't think that these things suck any more or less for doing so. a sad day when we have such zeal regarding something so pure as music, so simple as vibrations entering your head.

  • Alright you fucking hippie, take your patuli-laden hogwash elsewhere. If people didn't have a discerning ear for these "vibrations" there wouldn't be any variation in music, there would just be a droning hiss, because like, you know, it's all sound anyway right?

  • Pwnz0rs

  • uhh hes using a Ibanez heyureee but what kind? i just bought a nice "good" conditioned Ibanez they dont make anymore for 300$ list price is 2000$

  • That was Tundra/Dessert Right?

  • They matured.

  • amazing... they should preform with 764-hero more and do it live

  • he just does want he wants haha

  • top notch!

  • Jesus Horace Christ! can't believe I missed them live. Twice.

  • same here... :((((

  • the reason their so skinny and good can probably be blamed on them smoking speed in the late 90's. Isaac's twacked the fuck out.

  • Jesus. Thanks for posting this. They're absolutely nuts. I love it.

  • 5-11-98 black cat washington dc. i have the whole video somewhere, its awesome

  • he's yelling into the pickup

  • That's fucking great footage. You can literally see the sweat drip off isaac's face. Small venues suit modest mouse better.

  • this was the same time i had a mega crush on isaac. i saw a lot of their shows around this time 96-99. so much incredible raw energy..it's great to see this footage! thank you.

  • man, Isaack looks so young there....

  • He's singing into the pickups, makes his voice sound crazy. This is the same way he sing when he sings 'DOES ANYBODY KNOW A WAY THAT A BODY COULD GET AWAY DOES ANYBODY KNOW A WAY' off Moon and Antartica

  • Tundra/Desert I believe

  • holy shit. i think i just came. isaac is so handsome. long drive rocks.

  • +1!!

  • woah, tmi, oh who am I kidding...me too :D Isaac Brock is a god!!

  • one of the best sons of this is a long drive for someone with nothing to think about. the guitar gets crazy with the fucking whammy bar
