Actually, a behind of Alexander Nevsky were the Mongols. Mongols did not support a direct military aid to Russians for fighting against that Catholicism (German and Teutonic Crusaders), however, Batu khan encourage Nevsky to fight with Germans. Because mongols also have a interest to invade west Europe in that time (1240). It would be a good reason to declare war to Holy Roman empire or Hungarian. Alexander realized a situation that he had nothing to loose, even if he loose in this battle.
