@DimebagVision Well probably not nowadays considering he is a lot older and not as in good of shape, but I think he would have a pretty good shot of winning some fights in the UFC when he was active (1993-2000), especially after they added the weight classes. Plus he killed another fighter after a seven year lay off, and he also beat Ronald Jhun and had a draw with Paul Jones, both of whom fought in the UFC. So it goes without saying he could have won a fight in the UFC.
Buddy of mine trained with paulson way back in the mid 90's. He used to come to State College (Penn State) to do seminars couple times a year. In fact he just did one there two months or so ago.
If you check the fight finder stats at Sherdog, you will see that his first recorded pro fight was dated 6/24/93. Though he fought and competed in other discplines for years prior to that even. Still, based on that one fight, he was doing MMA over 15 years ago, and about a full decade before it became popular in the mainstream sense.
no ywah bro, he was way ahead of his time. The first UFC fight I ever saw was like in 98' and this Paulson dude was way more well rounded than the guys I saw.
I do have more question for you MMAsage (sweet handle by the way lol) do you know why he didnt fight in the UFC? I mean with those skills he could've easily handled Royce Gracie, who was at the time cleaning up the octagon with his BJJ.
Have had the pleasure of training with Erik several times. One of the most inspiring and skilled MMA coaches in the world today. What he said at the end of the video about being good at telling jokes is also true. He can punish you for two days straight with gut wrenching training, but have you laughing and having a good time through the whole thing. Keep up the good work Sensei Paulson!
Just got back from Houston where I and others from WLJA had the opportunity to train with Erik Paulson. What a great striker and combat grappler! This guy is a supreme athlete and martial arts warrior. It was a pleasure Erik! Thank you for sharing some of your technique and insight!
The first time I saw Eric Paulson was against James Warring. Before the fight they played part of these highlights and I was like "What the hell is his style?!!! It's kickboxing and wrestling!" (back then there was no term for MMA). I was totally inspired by him. I didn't know his name until yesterday.
Lo and behold, he had also fought my teacher Matt Hume at 4:23 clear pic at 4:50 a match that was won by my teacher. I credit Paulson for inspiring me into MMA though. Godspeed Eric!
I'm just glad it wasn't that "let the bodies hit the floor, let the bodies hit the floor, let the bodies hit the floor, let the bodies hit the .......FLUUUUUUHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!" song.
@Teabonesteak I think everybody is sick of that fucking song. If I had a dime for every time I looked at a new highlight with that song, I could buy out Microsoft.
Thats back when it was fighting and not just another sport. Fights were much better then and you almost never seen one go to the second or third round.
If someone was stupid enough to give up his back the fight was over in seconds just like it would be in "real life" you didn't see someone defending a choke for 5 mins.
it was always a sport, just less rules .Many of the fights with full vale tudo rules were just messy brawls as the hands couldnt take the repeated punching and very few croostrained which made them 1 dimensional.
Make sure you tell him that he scared me out of MMA competing!
The first time I saw a No-Holds-Barred match he fought against James Warring and Harring pulled on Erik's long hair for 10 minutes. Since I have long hair myself I said "forget it!"
I've done MMA for 10 years but never felt incline to compete, for many reasons. In the back of my mind though, there was always that fight!
this is electric head by white zombie who are Rob zombies first group, and the song is from the Astro creep 2000 album which in my opinion is the best project Zombie ever was involved in.
I'm coming to L.A from England in Sept for a couple of weeks, I'd love to train in class with Erik, does he still teach classes there and how much is it? Just from seeing his vids I rate him as one of the top three trainers ever!
Nice vid! I truly consider Erik to be one of the unsung heroes of martial arts in our time... not only for his accomplishments in MMA and unique expertise in all the grappling/submission arts, but for his encyclopedic knowledge of martial arts in general. He was also a very accomplished MMA fighter before it became popular.
I had the privilege of training under him a bit back when he taught at the Inosanto Academy. I'd still train with him if his school was closer.
oh yeah and that guy doing demos with him at the end in a red gi top, I cant remember his name but he was a stunt double for brandon lee in the crow....FYI....
I was learning muay thai and shootfighting from a friend of paulsons in Palm springs for a year. Finally moved to OC, went to the little shit hole gym paulson had a few years ago and expected to meet this bad ass mean guy, and he was SO cool. haha...so nice. I mean..it was off. I also watched him tap out a MONSTER of a man wrestling and he helped my roundkick in about 5 minutes. Stunts, Muay thai, shoot fight, kali, JKD, Judo, BJJ, Boxing etc etc. he does it all....well
I went to his gym in Fullerton and this is the coolest and most dangerous man you ever meet. I was amazed at everything he was doing. I rather have this guy with me in a fight than anyone else in the world. Bad ass guy.
This guy trained MMA fighters such as Josh Barnett, Ken Shamrock, Cub Swanson & Ginelle Marquez and what I hear is closely affiliated with Sean Sherk & Brock Lesnar.
Paulson is a legend. As a fighter and coach. Not to mention a world class guy. His fighting system is technical and practical. I highly recommend incorporating his leg locks and defense to any BJJ portfolio.
Thanks for letting us know. Eric Paulson was a great fighter in his day, and I hear an amazing coach now. Good luck Mr. Paulson. I knew you'd still have some fire left!
Eric Paulson with long hair, first time I saw him fight was World Combat Championship, he chose to have his hair bunned at the back, he should of had it skull platted, he lost the fight cuz sum asshole just wrapped his hand in his hair when it came loose an a kept striking him with is other hand, since then Paulson opts for the skinhead look, just should of gone for skull brades. As a fighter, Amazing!
