I've just moved to padstow and only found out about this day a few days ago. In my opinion, Padstow is no more racist than anywhere else in the country, I agree that the celebrations are offensive and very politically incorrect but they aren't hurting anyone. Not sure whether youre concerned about racism issues, but you should know about a "Sinterklass"/Christmas celebration in the Netherlands and Flanders every 5&6 December. It dates from 1850, although there are a lot of revisionist explanations, it is a bunch of white Dutch people in blackface minstrel outfits, who they call "Zwarte Piet" (literally "Black Pete") who are Santa's slaves. That isn't an argument against this particular tradition: this festival means something profound to the individuals that participate in it, it has a purely symbolic and almost transcendent nuance, whereby men/women of the most present can connect with their forefathers; there is a strong element of continuity. The "event" itself is very strange and hard to understand (I'm still not sure what I have just seen), but some of the comments I read are absolutely hilarious. Prejudice is obviously ok then... Cornwall is ethnically celtic and traditions like this are continuations of old celtic festivals. 'Darkie Day' comes from the festival of Midwinter when they would paint their faces black to represent the darkest time of the year, in contrast to 'white' festivals in the warmer half of the year. Although it looks horrfically racist to people who don't understand it, this comes from hundreds of years ago when they wouldn't have even known black people existed. Get over it.

Come on people...maybe it is harmless...I'll need to do my own research...but for real if there wasn't offensive people would talk openly...some of those people have issues...the whole 'we've been doing it for years' arguement is utter assness. I mean there was slavery for years...I'm sure that wasn't right. There was nazism for years...nope not that either...people need to realize that our ancestors may have been wrong.

I am so sorry but I cannot see the racism in this video, perhaps it is my Irish name and roots that blinkers me. If it's so harmless, why are they so uppity and resistant to making a comment. Just explain yourself. As a black person, I'm no longer offended by the words of strangers, people I don't know or respect. But this is kinda...well inappropriate. MY friend went to Cornwall once and she told me she had a terrible experience with the attitude of a lot of the people. Well, sufficed to say this is one more reason for me to avoid the place...if only to save me a headache!

In a way, this video does the Black community more harm than good. It makes it look as though they are trying to 'dictate' the future of how we celebrate the history and traditions of our country.
Personally, I detest RAP music, and some of the anti-white lyrics some of this music has. But hey, do I go marching around with a camera in my hand and getting stressed about it?

No rural community likes a Londoner marching up to them and sticking a fuckin camera in their face. I wouldn't like it if a white guy did that to me.
At the end of day, the black guy in this video walked around Cornwall all day with his camera, and didn't get attacked, verbally abused or stabbed by anyone. Hardly an aggresive crowd were they. As a white guy, could I walk around Brixton and shove a camera in black peoples faces???

I've just moved to padstow and only found out about this day a few days ago. In my opinion, Padstow is no more racist than anywhere else in the country, I agree that the celebrations are offensive and very politically incorrect but they aren't hurting anyone. Race related crimes aren't exactly commonplace around cornwall. Traditions are weird things. just look at that cheese rolling thing!

Watching this didn't offend me it just confirmed how sad people in the UK can be. Of all the things to have an annual celebration for! So, what these people are saying is that they are taking their time and effort every year to celebrate the slaves coming to England???? I always say, the way to burn someone is not just with fire but with knowledge:)

I understand traditions, just like it should have been ok for Michael Vick to do his dog fights , or the polygamist to continue having many wives, etc. I'm not even being sarcastic.
I am african-american and this video does make me a little upset, but after a lot of thought...i can't waste all my energy trying to get someone to do something i want them to do. If that's what they do then what can i say? Again, it makes me slightly uneasy, but that's their culture.
