These kids are fabulous. I'd Like to see this young lady today.. She's so elegant.. True she might have lost her accent for the song but I don't blame her for wanting to show her best stuff. It was the directors job to see that she remained in character at all times.. How wonderful that Mr. Berlin left such a wonderful show for young people to perform.. It was called musical comedy not musical tragedy . One was supposed to leave the theater happy.. this was a delight.. The chorus was excellent!
this girl has an AMAZING voice...but as for playing Annie she loses her accent as soon as she starts singing. I wish i would have taped my school's production of this. We had an amazing girl named Felicia play Annie. She kept her accent the whole way through, but still had good tone quality.
The one actress who did a great job in a role originated by Merman was Bette Midler, in the TV revival of "Gypsy," which would have looked better if videotaped, to give it a live feel. But perhaps it was filmed to have a better alternative in that medium than the Russell version. Midler should have done that on Broadway, but that role went then to Tyne Daly, a solid actress, known popularly from her TV roles on "Cagney & Lacy" and "Judging Amy."
Merman should have gotten to do the film versions from all of her Broadway roles, including "Annie Get Your Gun" and "Gypsy," the latter for which she was slighted again in favor of Rosalind Russell.
But Andrews, too, suffered that fate, as while she was otherwise engaged, another actress stole her role of "Eliza Doolittle" for the film version of "My Fair Lady," that other actress being the very beautiful Audrey Hepburn, whose singing voice was dubbed in by Marnie Nixon. The only salvation from that situation is that Andrews' other engagement was the filming "Mary Poppins," for which she won the Oscar, something Hepburn didn't for "My Fair Lady."
Martin will forever be remembered as the best woman to play "Peter Pan," the production of which innovated that contraption which allows actors to "fly" on stage, a technique still being used today in productions like "Wicked."
She and Mary Martin were the originators of so many Broadway roles later done insufficiently by other actresses, excepting Julie Andrews, who improved upon Martin's role of "Maria Von Trapp" for the film version of "The Sound Of Music," though props to Martin for getting the property adapted for the stage in the first place.
No, the best professional "Annie Oakley" wasn't Betty Hutton, nor Judy Garland (from what footage exists), nor Bernadette Peters, nor Reba McEntire or Susan Lucci; the best was the woman who originated the role--Ethel Agnes Zimmerman a/k/a "Ethel Merman."
Great voice...but totally unlike Betty. Her voice is very proper and trained, but she drops the accent as soon as she begins singing. Part of the charm when Betty Hutton took over for Judy Garland in the movie version was that Betty's voice wasn't great...and you can tell it was like the character that was written.
i'm not saying this girl is bad, because she definately isn't. but in MY opinion, the girl at my school was a little more...belty, and she backed it up....does anyone get that? lol....but check out the video on my profile. you'll see what i mean.
