this song is brilliant and an uncanny candidate for MASSIVE HIT because : 1. the verses are chromatic, meaning they have no tonality, its a seemingly random (but not quite) chord progression and 2. the chorus is in a 7/4 time signature, they skip a beat, giving it a weird feel. Maybe at the time nothing interesting was happening in the mainstream and thats why this was such a huge hit.

I haven't really heard much Wolfmother but I have heard "By the Sword" on Slash's solo album a lot of times (not realising it was him singing). There's a video in the related videos section of him doing it live which shows he's a really good singer.

I personally like this cover but I'll admit that technically there are flaws. It's not within his vocal range, it's a hard song to do.
