Tommy's has strength, Michael's has passion, and Josh's...can't really compare. But all three are sang beautifully, it's just Tom's and Mike's has something extra....they are not just singing, but telling a story...I just get singing from Groban
Always loved this song - he has an awesome voice. I recently listened to this version: Tommy Körberg From Chess - Anthem (I Mitt Hjärtas Land) - Beautiful!
@Dirschbag yes, it was tommy körberg. he was cast first, recorded it first and performed it first… and in my opinion he is by far the best performer of this song
I have seen the versions... Ball, Groban, etc. I am fans of them in other contexts. But Körberg completely owns this song... espically at the end, he is just unmatched in the level of emotion and how he extends the notes.
There's no vibrancy on the top notes, sounds flat as a tack. Not too bad but not quite as good as the Warlow version and streaks ahead of the Groban one.
Some songs just give you the shivers!. And this rendition with the full orchestra accompaniment, wow! It really lets Tommy shine. I saw Tommy perform this in 1986 in the London Production. It was my first ever professional theater experience and it was amazing. While others are certainly free to give it there best shot, Tommy Korberg will always own Anatoly Sergievsky in the same way that Colm Wilkinson will always own Jean ValJean or Michael Crawford the Phantom.
This is the best! A great and wonderfull Mr. Körberg, a wonderfull orchestre, a wonderfull Maestro David Firmann, and of course a fantastic Anthem by Andersson/Ulvaeus. Thank You!!!
Wow! I always loved the recorded version, but it's even more powerful live. I'd pay the full ticket price to hear him sing just this song with an orchestra. There's power, feeling, precision, tone - amazing...

k first time listen to this guy sing this song... I only knew bout the show cause I love josh groban... I must say this man does not sing it any better then groban... I guess he acts it better...
@Bearn78 alright I am ok with you thinking that this guys version is better than groban... but if you were truly say that groban version was "awfull" you must be tone deaf that man hits all the note perfectly. I mean come on
@UltimateRomo Sure, Groban had/has good technical skills but add feeling and you get Tommy Körbergs version. To me, Groban was just a man singing a song and he tried more to hit the notes and pronounce the words than to sing with passion. This version will always be the best in my opinion.
This is the greatest performance of this song. However, Korberg is inconsistent. His Itunes version is terrible in my opinion but then he also busts out this. Confused.
THis is THE definitive version, in my view and just thrilling. His voice is extraordinary. He is a master with this song and he understands the words and the context better than anyone. Groban has nice voice, but no clue what he is singing about. Same with David Carroll (very weak, phrasing is just awful). All others just don't understand what they are singing about. Enjoy and share with others.
@solbergsindre: If Jussi Björling sang this one even Tommys version would sound ordinary...Tommys voice is unbeatable by other musical singers I.M.O. but Jussi The Tenor of tenors.....if he sung this one it would be close to divine!!! (The ever biggest respect to Mr Tommy Körberg but Jussi voice is beyond comparison you can here the differnce when they sing Oh Holy Night in swedish: Oh Helga Natt !) / Regards
@MrrrMagoo It is one thing you have not taken in consideration, this song is about the pride one man feels for his country, and of his love for it. Frankly, your opinion of Jussi Björling surpassing Tommy Körberg when it comes to passion, when singing a song which is clearly meant for Körberg is nothing but an insult to Jussi Björlings performance as an outstanding *opera* singer, and to Körberg by practically saying that anyone could be better than him, if they can hit the notes perfectly.
How can a comparison of the performance (despite theoretical) of Jussi singing anthem versus Tommys performace of anthem be a insult to Jussi when saying that Jussis performance would be even more remarkable than Tommys, when the song is written with Tommys voice in mind????
@MrrrMagoo Simply because we will never hear a rendition of Jussi singing the anthem. You cannot presume he would be fantastic when an example will never be presented. We can argue this fact over and over and still reach the conclusion that both your and my opinions, as well as everyone else, will be purely subjective with nothing to back it up. We have numerous versions of the song, some better than others, it is fair to compare those, bringing up an "hypothetical version" by Jussi is just sad.
@UnbelivableRealistic: "Simply because we will never hear a rendition of Jussi singing the anthem." - That is a strange answer to my question. If anything it is a Tribute to Jussi to say that he would make an even more fantastic version/rendition than Tommy, based on his repertoire, fantastic interpretations of opera arias, musicality, vocal technique etc etc.!!! An honest compliment can never be an insult, they are antonyms!
Wow. At 2:30 "where would I start". He really nails that note. Almost sharp, top string if you like. Never heard it done that way before. I have heard better versions of the whole song, but not that note. Superb.
@jengerock He definitely nails the note. There is a theory in singing that a note is three strings. Bottom (very slightly flat), Middle (spot) and top (slightly sharp). He sounds slightly sharp. I am not a professional, nor do I have perfect pitch.
Here is the sublime Anthony Warlow's version. To me he slides slightly up to the note and then really nails it. Tell me what you think.
this is a very great performance from surely a great singer, but I apprecciate more Jan werner's version(i'm not norwgian) maybe because tommy doesn't get the high notes as Jan at the end, but I think that's because tommy has(as the version of josh groban, which i don'tlike) surely a great voice, but not so unique(many opera singer have similiar voice singing) as Jan's one. Isn't it?
How moving is this? I cross over waters but I'm still there now! I just want to cry as it's so beautiful. I love this man and the way he sings this. Raw emotion.
"Let man's petty nations tear themselves apart"- it is sung so incredibly. A friend of mine told me he sounds better live than recorded. I must agree. In fact, it's an understatement.

Jag får gåshud av denna låten...Men bara när Tommy sjunger, ingen annan har en sådan röst som han! Josh Groban kan slänga sig i väggen , han gör den här inte ens hälften så bra som Tommy :>
Beautiful song, and YES the location is in Denmark, I was to the concert, which was right after "The Deaf Olympics" had their day, in Parken . The worst part of the audio at the concert was horrible, so it is great to see the audio is much better here in the video.

I think he's good and i like how he mixed it up just a tad at 2:44 but i'm sorry i still believe Anthony Warlow's Version is the best I've ever heard... absolutely amazing he is. Power, Realism, and Control. Check it out if you get time.
Mamma njuter i sin himmel när jag spelar anthem med Tommy Körberg eller Gå upp på klippan med Ulf Lundell på youtube. Gud välsigne riktiga mästare. Hell yeah! Gud säger oxå hell yeah!!
What a voice, Hairs standing up on the back of my neck. The welsh have a great expression for describing the feeling you get hearing music sung like this: Hwyl FAWR.
Just quickly checked out Josh Grobans version, A corpse livened up to sing music.
I've grown up listening to Tommy Körberg, and I still get chill over my whole body hearing this. I've heard several other artist cover this song, but no one's ever, ever measured up to him. He's definitely one of the best singers Sweden's produced!
@Knasputte7 Yes thats true, he is thew original singer of this song. In fact, this song was even written with Körberg in mind as the singer. Benny Andersson himself have said that.
@Knasputte7 You are ABSOLUTELY right. This man (Korberg) sung this song magnificently. There was no other who could interpret like him. All the others merely pale in comparison. Musicians all agree.
That audience better had given him a standing ovation:). This is my favorite performance of him singing Anthem. He has so much talent. His control and power is incredible.
Is it unnormal to listen to this when you are 17 soon 18? Btw screw your opinions I'm me and I love it! :D

Sorry I'm not impressed. It lacks power, richness and depth of voice. Josh Groban's version is way far better than anyone else's.

The only bad thing about the song is that it's so short, it makes you want more! Tommy Körberg FOR THE WIN.

Just NO Comparison.
Tommy is AWSOME,
F@#cken Deadly as they say in Ireland ! !

I've grown up listening to Tommy Körberg, and I still get chill over my whole body hearing this. I've heard several other artist cover this song, but no one's ever, ever measured up to him. He's definitely one of the best singers Sweden's produced!

I love it when a voice like that comes out of someone so 'normal' looking.
Brilliant and nerve tingling :-D

To those of you saying that this was a great interpretation: Tommy Körberg is the ORIGINAL SINGER of this song, all others are the cover artists! Ok?

@Knasputte7 alright, i think we all got it, calm down XD
piscis133 1 year ago
@Knasputte7 Yes thats true, he is thew original singer of this song. In fact, this song was even written with Körberg in mind as the singer. Benny Andersson himself have said that.

@Knasputte7 You are ABSOLUTELY right. This man (Korberg) sung this song magnificently. There was no other who could interpret like him. All the others merely pale in comparison. Musicians all agree.

OMG. I thought I know this song well, but I've not heard such powerful voice and interpretation until viewing this LIVE Tommy Körberg version.

That audience better had given him a standing ovation:). This is my favorite performance of him singing Anthem. He has so much talent. His control and power is incredible.

Best singer ever!!

The power in his voice at 2:30 is absolutely amazing. I think I've heard maybe 3 other singers have that much pure power. Truly, truly phenomenal.
