You know the best thing about America is that there is freedom of speech and religion. The fact that we all do not agree with one political philosophy or religion or whether we even chose to get involved with either or not is what this country is supposed to be about. We all have views on how things ought to be and no one's is above anyone else's. Americans using patriotism to bash fellow Americans over the head because they disagree is what is un-American.
@frc1968 No one is pounding anyone over freedom of speech. Only non-patriots would feel uncomfortable, threatened or bashed by displays of patriotism. We have freedom of speech to safely express and hold differing views, BUT the US Constitution,OUR form of government,IS above everyone else's view. Hostility toward our system of government is one's right, but by definition is anti-American. Right or left, patriotic Americans believe in the US Constitution, and the vision of our founding fathers.
@ObamAmabO Patriotism can, has and is being used as a political weapon and mainly from those on the right to try and intimidate those with whom they disagree. Patriotism in and of itself is a good thing but when it is used for negative political purposes it can be an evil thing. Every American has a right to their own beliefs and should not be antagonized, demoralized, threatened, intimidated, labeled as un-American or told to get out of the country for holding those beliefs.
@frc1968 That something good may be misused doesn't make it bad. I thought you were for free speech. You seem to be against speech that challenges beliefs.
@ObamAmabO You are making assumptions about me that are inaccurate and did not read what I wrote. I'm not against speech that challenges beliefs. I'm all for freedom of speech but speech that seeks to silence others or to demean others who have different views under the guise of "patriotism" defeats that purpose. Finally, I never said patriotism was bad. I merely stated that it has and is being used for bad purposes by certain groups of individuals for political gain.
@frc1968 Okay, sorry if I made false assumptions, but I read everything you wrote. Yes, I agree that free speech is sometimes used for bad purposes. We differ in that I don't believe that patriotism is used to silence or demean anyone. Someone with non-American, unpatriotic views might FEEL demeaned in that they are judged as being non-American in their views. I'm sure you must be very concerned with forces that try to silence sincere viewpoints with terms like racist, homophobe, etc.
@ObamAmabO Further, the Constitution protects the views of the individual it is not above the individual. Who exactly gets to determine who is a "non-patriot" or what is "anti-American"?
@frc1968 The Constitution protects us from each other as well as our freedom of speech. As Americans we are subject to the Constitution, as our form of government. If we are patriotic Americans we embrace it. To promote a change of our system of government is revolutionary, not patriotic. By definition, those that are hostile to our Constitution and its provisions are anti-American or un-patriotic.
@ObamAmabO I am aware of the protections of the Constitution and it's various amendments and do indeed embrace it. And while it is the law of the land the people who live by it can make changes to it. As Jefferson basically said our government derives it's power from the consent of the governed. When a government ceases to govern from that consent it becomes a tyranny.
@frc1968 You raise a good point. Those raising the patriotic cry are concerned over tyrannical un-American forces in government . They see a power grab away from the people as they grow the power of the government to intrude into the lives and freedoms of individuals, and to inflict social engineering against the consent of the people. This isn't simply a Democrat-Republican issue.
@frc1968 Communism and Socialism are un American forces. Obama has surrounded himself with individuals sympathetic to communism and socialism.. individuals that admire Communist Dictators like Chairman Mao. For social engineering, look no further than Prop 8 in CA, where a judge overruled the will of the people to change the definition of marriage..social engineering in the first degree - or-attempts by the homosexual lobby to normalize gay behavior via the schools, courts, legislation, etc.
@ObamAmabO Well, sir I am a gay man who also happens to be a Socialist and I can truthfully say that I love my country and Constitution. I pay taxes and obey the laws like everyone else. As far as a judge "over-ruling" the will of the people on Prop 8 that is what judges are for to protect the minority from the tyranny of the majority. As for Obama he is a liberal corporatist who has surrounded himself with those from big banks & insurance. Definitely not a Socialist.
@frc1968 Well, I like to find the common ground! We both love our country and the Constitution. Isn't America great that we can freely disagree! - although I think I actually agree with you about Obama not being a Socialist but a liberal corporatist. Anyway, some intense and engaging discussion. You seem to be a very sincere and thoughtful person. Anyway, all of our debating aside, I hope you liked the song....
@ObamAmabO Yes I want to say thank you for posting the video. I first saw the clip in an episode of M*A*S*H and thought I'd see if I could find it on Youtube. We may not agree but I want to say thanks for a respectful and engaging discussion. I truly feel that one of the main problems we face as a country is that too many people are too busy yelling at each other and calling each other names instead of talking and trying to understand each other so we can solve the serious issues we face. :-)
The guy won an election fair and square and I believe he's doing a decent job.
