I generally use 22 or 24 gauge sterling silver headpins as they bend very easily. If you need to use a thicker headpin, use sterling silver rather than steel as it bends *much* easier.
I like twisting the wire because just making a regular loop is hard! I go through a ton of headpins because it either doesn't look right or I snap them in half! This is a good video!
