  • *cough cough* watch?v=7j4ZSvzuWcM&feature=related

  • deep stuff

  • His talking about predators

  • hasn't bruce wayne has been the "costume" for a long time though? like pre-crisis?

  • He's very James Mason-esque in this role with the lisp as well as the classy, educated veneer of the arch villan.

  • That's an academy award-grade performance right there.

  • "And it is in that characteristic that Superman stands alone."

What about Diana Prince aka Wonder Woman?

When she had her own secret identity in the Silver Age, she didn't wake up Diana Prince in the morning. She was Wonder Woman, or Diana, Emmisary and Princess of Themyscira. She didn't gain her powers via external means(training, like Batman, or radioactive mutation, like Spider-Man), she was naturally strong and agile, IIRC.

Same can be said of the Mutants of Marvel fame.

  • the shape of those horses heads on the wall will always remind me of sandwiches with the crusts cut off and goldfish.

  • SHE TOOK AN ARROW TO THE KNEE

  • @TZIDuffman HAHAHAHA

  • Wow this guy is awesome

  • DRUNK TANK 108!

  • 0:55

SHE TOOK AN ARROW TO THE KNEE!!!

  • This is an interesting view of seeing superheroes, and he is right about this whole analogy thing. Just sad that I really don't like Superman (thanks to Young Justice) and think that it's lame to just have superpowers instead of gaining them (like the Flash) or training yourself to seem like one (like Batman).

But whatever, makes me reflect on how I see Superman and also Clark Kent.

And I also love Tarantino's way of thinking and writing dialogue... It's amazing.

  • tarentino always had a way of doing good dialogue

  • Bill must have never read "For the Man Who Has Everything".

  • It's funny because he's wrong.

  • This guy was COMPLETELY WRONG.

Superman was born Kal-El, yet raised Clark Kent. Besides the accident prone tripping, Clark Kent is who he really is.

Batman is the one that wakes up Batman, pretends to be the drunk partyboy for the people.

  • @FLCLrox1 Wayne was raised and born as an unbelievably rich guy, Superman was born with super powers manifesting on earth while he was raised clark he was kal el.

  • @FLCLrox1 your wrong on two counts Superman was born superman on Kal-El he was born with his natural abilities that is what he is saying. Batman on the other hand he was born a normal human . Batman had to Acquire his skills from Liam Nesson Aka. king of Narnia .

  • @FLCLrox1 and rorschach... he considers the mask to be his real face

  • @FLCLrox1 what has society come to when you no longer troll someone for their reading skills, but now you need to troll them for not being able to understand a scripted film that makes it simple enough for any idiot to understand....... bravo for totally missing the point of this clip and being COMPLETELY WRONG yourself.

  • @FLCLrox1

Actually, its like he wears 2 costumes.

Superman: The protector of Metropolis and the world.

"Clark Kent": Clumsy, accident prone, and unconfident newspaper writer.

Which leaves his true persona of Clark Kent, who I guess only his parents really see. More down to earth than Superman, more confident than the nerd Kent at the Daily Planet.

  • @FLCLrox1 WRONG

  • @FLCLrox1 You're the one who's wrong. Bill is specifically talking about the nerdy, bumbling Clark Kent at the Daily Planet. It's a deliberate fabrication.

The boy back on the farm may have been *named* Clark, but Ma and Pa Kent knew who and what he was. They raised Superman. It's Superman who has their values.

  • @Celedam Problem is, that version of Clark Kent is not standard to all versions of Superman. The public Clark is not always a bumbling nerd. George Reeves played Clark as a normal guy. The animated series is much the same way. And in recent years, more often than not, that's how he is portrayed in the comics, as well. Everyone assumes the Christopher Reeve version of Clark Kent is how he is always portrayed.

  • @TheOnlySnake The Clark Kent in the New 52 "Action Comics" is a slacker kid living in a tenement...

Anyhow, I see your point, but in this case it's a movie and Bill is clearly talking about the movie Superman.

  • @Celedam Yeah, I guess you are right. And yeah, the Action Comics version of Clark Kent is kind of nerdy, but the "present" version of him in Superman seems more in-line with a George Reeves take on Clark.

  • Good stuff.

  • I love this clip!

  • The ironic thing is that writers nowadays basically say this about Batman.

  • @TB4000 those guys are wrong

  • @TB4000

Well, ones who want to make him even more grim and dark than he already is, like Tim Burton.

    Still, awesome writing.

  • "Best dilouge" jesus christ x_x

  • Hands down, the best villain from a movie ever. He doesn't want revenge, he doesn't want to kill anyone, he just wants to raise his daughter and see the woman he loved and tried to kill once more, even admitting himself that he is evil. David Carradine, we salute you for being the best villain of all time.

  • I love Tarrantinos dialogues.

The ironic thing is, even with all of the special effects on this film the best scene was some old bloke rambling about comic books.

  • @smethybaggie yep

  • fuckin' epic scene!!!

  • Love this! Great movie, great scene

  • In Comic books, this is correct. In Smallville, not so much.

  • Hmm, i'd have to agree with Linkara on this one and say that's not really accurate.

If you'll allow me to be picky here, sure he was BORN on Krypton as Kal-El, but he was RAISED on earth as Clark Kent, eventually donning the mantle of Superman.

Sure Kent's clumsy and mild, but also a great reporter and loyal friend, unshakable in his honest beliefs. He only wears the Superman costume because it's become a symbol of hope and a reminder of his duty.

"He's Clark Kent before he's Superman."

  • @HeinrichKonig you're an idiot, he was raised to be clark kent, meaning he was raised by humans to be what they stand for he wouldn't know how to critique humans as weak if they hadn't shown him how, but he never ceases to be what he was born to be, a superior in every way, he wears the costume 'cos that's his outfit, it became a symbol of hope because of him, not the other way around, great reporter ? lol, loyal friend and unshakable beliefs are supermans traits, he's sups before ANYTHING else

  • @bakikatana Firstly, I appreciate your opinion, but please don't say I'm "an idiot" just because I disagree with you. It only weakens your own position in an argument.

Secondly, remember Superman-the movie, he had to answer the psychic call of Jor-El's crystal to learn of his powers and origins.

Third if he really thinks himself superior why doesn't he just completely remake the world in his image? Besides, why does he need to satirise man? I'd like to think he's not THAT big an ass-hole! :P

  • @HeinrichKonig i don't know if i already answered this, but here, no you're an idiot not because of disagreeing with me but because you're ..utterly freaking wrong, he had to learn about his powers, doesn't mean he didn't have them just because he didn't know what those are, he wasn't a normal human and whamo..he started flying when the old guy told him he could do it, HE WAS BORN AS KAL-EL, THE KRIPTONIAN

  • @bakikatana Okay, I'll admit you've raised some good points. But now you're saying I'm an idiot because I've got the characterisation of a dude in red pants incorrect :P Secondly, there are many different characterisations of Superman. In All-Star Superman the cartoon he is like you say, but in the regular Superman: the animated series they essentially spell out the fact he's Clark before Supes "You're still Clark Kent, Superman just helps out every once in a while."

  • @HeinrichKonig second - remake the world in his own image ?? those are called BAD guys, who ARE trying to do that, those who superman fights, he's not an ass-hole, if humans weren't what they are he wouldn't have anyone to critique, he's just pointing out the obvious, like house lol, humans are children no matter what the age, he's there as an overseer and protector for them, without opposing his way to us, it's up to us to "grow-up" and stop being like clark kent

  • @bakikatana You have your view, I have mine, and that's okay, just don't try and force your ideas on me. I won't argue with you anymore, but you know, it might be interesting to look at the character from a different perspective :)

  • @HeinrichKonig You're correct when talking about post crisis Superman, they changed it around and made Clark his real persona. Bill is pretty accurately describing pre-1986 Superman here though.

  • You know a good counter argument for what Bill is saying here would be Batman. Eventually all of Bruce Wayne's darkness and hatred become the Batman persona but as time progresses, as Batman Bruce is himself whilst Mr. Wayne becomes nothing more than his figure head to deal with normal life. In this sense he is the opposite of Bill's superman because Wayne creates batman and eventually becomes Batman

  • That's Tarantino talking through Carradine's mouth. The director is a real crazy comic books reader

  • wouldn't Superman also be secret identity of Kal-El? I mean, Superman can't be a real name no?

  • @holyknight234 Superman was the name given to him by the press when he appeared. I guess he kind of just owned it as everyone just called him that.

  • What in the Fuck is "Drunk Tank"!?

  • @falloutghoul1 It's a podcast, the hosts of the show hate when people randomly shout "Drunk tank!" in the videos they talk about in the podcast, so that's why they do it.

  • @jankogo NERD!

  • Lol finaly someone standin' for superman.. :D

  • RIP MR. Carradine, you are one of my inspirations in my pursuit of this craft.

One of my absolute FAVORITE monologues

BTW, 27 people are related to Beatrix Kiddo

  • i thought superman was pretty well drawn in S:TAS and Justice League

  • This makes no sense, but good point with Clark being Supermans alter ego (a reverse of the usual).

  • RIP David :(

  • Part 2: Continued... Clearly Superman is influenced by his wholesome upbringing in the Kent family, anything else would be preposterous. Identity is influenced by several factors, one major being the environment. I assume Kal-El is born nude. The Superman costume isn´t more his identity than a t-shirt given to him be the Kents. Clark Kent´s personality is exaggerated, but that´s intentional and doesn´t imply that Superman regards the human race as weak. Nuf said

  • @jankogo NEEEEEEEEEERRRRRRDDDDDDDDD

  • @IamTheAnhilator Are you still in high school, dude? Please..

  • @jankogo even if i am in Elementary school, this is the mithology that superman represent ;).....a mean is ovius......

  • Have you heard about Miss Functional Subliminal Message ? :)

  • Part 2: Identity. In the scene Bill uses Superman to make his point. One must not forget that Bill is an assasin and his view of the world may differ from that of normal people. A Christian could argue that Superman is JC, for example. Our interpretation of things depends on our previous experiences. Do I agree with Bill? No, essentially I don´t. Superman is not born Superman, he is born Kal-El of Krypton. He becomes Superman after having lived on earth for quite some time...

  • Part 1: Is Superman badly drawn? A totally subjective opinion of course, but I will agree with Bill in the sense that some of the earlier Superman comics imho lack a certain depth in both ploth, dialogue and pencilling technique. Some comics could no doubt be better. My favourite artists are Byrne and Perez, but Morrison and Benes are ok too...

  • First of all it is pretty fascinating to observe how some comic book fans gets all worked up over a fictional character and totally subjective opinions! Let´s not kill one another, but try to have a reasonable discussion of Bill´s little monologue...

Let me start by saying that I am a total fan of Superman comics, JLA comics and I personally believe that Supes is an awesome hero, perhaps the greatest of them all. I will divide my little "analysis" of Bill´s monologue in two parts...

  • completely agree, to be honest.

  • His point is more than just how an outsider views humanity, its a larger critique of identity. How we pretend to be someone else in order to acquire certain things like courage and strength. In this case uma thurman is super man, bill is saying that when she wakes up in the morning she is a cold blooded killer, and that her wanting to get married and have a family (see beginning of movie) is conflicting with her true nature. Its as if superman one day wanted to be only clark kent.

  • This guy makes Superman sound interesting...

  • @TheShadowPigeon superman is interesting!

  • @TheShadowPigeon screw you

  • RIP

  • It's the superman monologue.

  • superman? does anyone realize this also describes chris nolan's batman....

  • @malleymyster Did you listen to a word he said? Superman was born Superman and became Clark Kent. Bruce Wayne was born Bruce Wayne and became Batman. Superman is different because he was born great, unlike Wayne who has to become great. He discusses himself as Clark Kent to reflect his view of human beings as weak, frightened cowards.

  • @malleymyster batman isnt a superhero though. hes just a vigilante.

  • @rahl182 lol wrong. He IS a supehero.

  • Drunk tank

  • This is his villainous observation. Keen! Maybe. Well thought out perspective though...

  • This speech could not be more utterly wrong. Badly drawn? Alex Ross says hi. And he was Clark Kent LONG before he became Superman, you jackass. Martian Manhunter, Starfire, Nightcrawler, etc are much better examples of the superhero being the "real" ego.

  • @topster888 Excuse me, but he is not talking about Alex Ross in particular, but the average of Superman is actually not that well drawn, really. Also; How is it that you think he was Clark Kent, when he was BORN Kal-El? Kal-El is SUPERMAN, not a diffrent man altogether. Superman was born superman, and is Clark Kent because his adoptive parents raised him, not his real parents. Please comment somewhere else when you are trying to act smart.

  • @Hunterxhunt Lol, firstly, Alex Ross has indeed drawn a number of the "average" Superman comics. As has Tom Grummett, Jim Lee, Shane Davis, and a lot of other critically-acclaimed pencillers that you likely never even heard of. Superman is a very consistently well-drawn comic.

Also, he was born Kal-El and was *raised* as Clark Kent from infancy. He didn't learn where he came from until after almost 20 years of being Clark Kent. So no, he was Clark Kent long before he was Superman.

  • @topster888 Calling out a lot of names to prove your point just shows that you have a very biased opinion where you enjoy a certain sort of comic design; whereas I myself prefer other artists.

Also; his real parents already gave him a name before he came to earth. How is it that you then argue that that is his real identity? Really, he is not any less alien because he was raised as a earthborn child.

  • @Hunterxhunt Naming a bunch of great artists that illustrate the Superman comic = being biased about Superman being badly drawn? I think you're mistaken, that's called *proof* that Superman is well-drawn. But just for shits and giggles, please name for me comic artists you like. I'm willing to bet you don't know any.

Also, he was *raised* as Clark Kent. He was on Krypton for only a month before being sent off-world. Therefore, his identity for the majority of his life was as Clark, not as Kal

  • @topster888 So if you are born as a superhuman-being, you are not a superhuman-being because you are raised as a human...? Flawless logic. Also, my favorite artists are Dave Gibbons and David Lloyd. I prefer the gritty and contrasted look of comics. But I guess I don't know any others just because I only mention TWO and not all artists I have ever seen.

  • @Hunterxhunt No, he's a super-human being raised as a *human*. I gotta say dude, it's really clear you don't know much about this. The reason he acts like a dork as Clark Kent is so no one would suspect a bumbling klutz to be the Man of Steel. Maybe you're unaware, but Superman doesn't wear a mask, so if Clark walked around tall and acted the way Superman does, people would suspect him very quickly to be Superman. This isn't conjecture, read the Superman books where he explains this if you want.

  • @Hunterxhunt Also, it doesn't matter which artists you prefer over the pencillers who do Superman normally, because they are objectively well-drawn. Sure you may prefer other styles, but you can't say that it's not well-drawn, because it is.Why are you so pig-headed about defending this speech? Do you like it THAT MUCH that you refuse to take facts into account?

  • @topster888 Aha, now you are no longer denying the fact that Superman is ALWAYS superman until he dresses up as clark Kent, because that's his real costume.

Also, yes, I do defend his right to be subjective about Superman's artists. In fact, I am too. You are allowed to have your own opinion, but you were the one to say that he CAN'T say that. It's subjective, you putz.

  • @topster888 If you're arguing that Superman was actually well drawn, you couldn't miss the point any more if you and the point were on different plains of existence.

  • @theantithesis1 Related to what is Superman badly drawn?

  • @topster888 good grief, youre dumber than a sack of brick arent you? you totally missed the point of the dialogue, and pointing out irrelevancies on youtube.

  • @rahl182 He's trying to make a point about how an outsider views humanity and his reference to such drags on for 3 minutes and is 100% false. How is that irrelevant?

  • @topster888 Dude, you're the dumbass. What he is saying is 100% TRUE. People are who we make ourselves based on what we wish to accomplish. Uma Thurman is Superman. Naturally she is a cold-blooded assassin bitch but she tried to leave it all and have a family and be happy. She tried to be only Clark Kent

  • @topster888 BUT he was "Superman" Before he was Clark Kent Tenq.

  • Drunk tank

  • Drunk tank is a podcast by rooster teeth it is very entertaining and they link to videos, web pages and articles and people write in the comments drunk tank to say where they came across it, drunk tank

  • O YOU DONT UNDERSTAND HE MASTERBATED WHILE HE WAS HANGING HIMSELF

  • More than a critic on humanity, Clark Kent is a critic and visual embodiment of Superman's code of behavior which aligns nicely with the Midwest Born-again christian morality with all it's faults, benefits and contradictions(ignoring period under Bush where the born-agains where co-opted by warmongers). He is overweight, has bad clothes, and thick glasses. Superman is the psychical embodiment of the potential of the good aspects of Christianity and small town American values-he refuses to kill a

  • I can't help but wonder if the use of the phrase "natural born killer" was a reference to the fact that Tarentino wrote the script (that was all but completely rewritten) for Natural Born Killers... or maybe I'm just overanalyzing. Great scene though:)

  • No he was Clark Kent before he ws superman. He was born a Kryptonian yes but hea was raised on Midwestern Values. and he is not weak, he knows the people from earth and he respects us, his wish to protect these values and the wish to use his powers for good lead to him becoming superman.

Linkara said it better than I just watch his Act or God review. This scene makes no sense and I am not even a regular comic book reader.

  • @AlSidre He always had super human strength unlike the other super heroes.....he just didnt know what to do with it until he learned from his deceased father from krypton

  • @AlSidre You're looking at Superman too literally. He was born as Kal-El of Krypton. He was born with all his powers that make him "super". Just because he didn't call himself Superman before Clark Kent doesn't mean that he wasn't born with the characteristics that make him Superman which is what Bill is getting at. Bruce Wayne wasn't born with his martial arts skills and mental capabilities, he had t acquire his knowledge and he needed a reason to become Batman. See what i'm saying?

  • wow even superman didnt know that , absolutely marvelous !!

  • Man, that voice...

  • Comment removed

  • I notice that now. Superman was born superman. He created the identity of Clark Kent.

  • Priceless!!!

  • "Are you calling me a superhero?

"No, but im telling you that you'll become one in a really shitty film called "My Super Ex-Girlfriend"

  • Sorry Bill has it wrong Clark Kent is the real person, and Clark Kent is the real Superman

  • Comment removed

  • @KenshiroUK I agree,

  • I've never heard someone so passionate over a comic book. BRILLIANT writing from the BRILLIANT Tarantino.

  • Ya spiderman goes to sleep as spiderman. He does not need a coustume. Just make sence to me.

  • @Chaca05 he wasn't born spider man. he had to get bitten by a radioactive spider. Supe was born the supe. and taht is how he died. maybe he wasn't all superman after all.

  • This man could make a shopping list poetic.

  • this is deep

    I miss this movie, damn..

  • I know that after this everybody will stone me....but BATMAN is not actually Bruce Wayne, Bruce Wayne is actually BATMAN, granted that he wasn't born as BATMAN as Bill stated, but in the moment that Bruce's parents were murdered Bruce also died. Not being a great BATMAN fan, to make my point clear: In the movie BATMAN ('89) Bruce, sometimes look kinda weak, not very smart, just like Clark Kent

  • @IMPALA32A thats his cover

  • @IMPALA32A Yeah, I think Bill missed reading the Dark Knight Returns.

  • @IMPALA32A YEah but he still has to put on a costume to become batman.

  • @IMPALA32A dude... shut the fuck up!

  • not so great

  • @dvarblo

    Agree.

  • This and the dialogue between Grace and her father at the end of Dogville are two of the best i've seen.

  • Imo Tarantino likes to make his movie characters suffer, this right here is a nice speech but also a psychological torture that Bill is applying to Beatrix. Tarantino maybe has a sadist streak because I've noticed that there are numerous scenes in his films where one person is dominating and inflicting pain on the other person.

  • He told Poison Ivy who Batman really is!!! Noooo!

  • I find that quintin will find and age old debate and cleverly place it within his film almost mathematically, and it's one of the many reasons to me, he is a God among film makers to me...

  • you know I always found it ironic that nobody knows that Superman's real name isn't Clark Kent. And it is not Superman. it's almost like human's are too self centered to remember he was born before he came to earth, even if he is a fictional character.
