To be honest, I'm with you on this buddy. I have to say that some people that I come across are just horrible artists. I'm sometimes afraid to say that they suck or criticize some of them because of the drama that I've come across. Everything I agree with you on, except the photography as that can be considered art since people have different and creative ways of taking pictures. I do agree that a few pictures is tolerable. But a gallery is asking too much.

I have a love/hate relationship with DA and all it's Tartlets right now. The only reason I get on there is to check my messages or look for a pose reference or tutorial or something. 'Cause let's face it, DA's got a good selection of stock photos and it's share of good tutorials.
I draw something that I'm proud of and looks great but doesn't get any sort of feedback unless it's a fanart of something which really pisses me off since I've been trying to wean myself off of drawing fanart.

I love DA and I go on it every other day. But I agree with the whole unoriginallity of art on the site. Even though I add some of the fan art to my favorites, it wouldn't kill the artists just to come up with their own characters. Also, the popularity stuff with pageviews reminds me of Facebook, with the whole popularity shit going on wtih kids and teens.

Truth be told: if you work in a traditional medium and do actual paintings (you know: on canvas with brush) you get almost no input and no reconaissance. I do digital 3D and Freehand sketches. I post them on Deviantart for not just showing them, but to get some critiques so I can improve :P 2 years of being a member, and out of 107 posted Deviations, got 47 comments, 59 favourite and ONE constructive critique. Other peoples "work": Image of a plain pussy: No sign of art/photography related skills, no light, no composition just a pussy by itself. Result: 62 comments, 126 faves, quoted comment: "superb artwork n luv the model...thumbs up"..........

I don't understand how cosplay is not art? Making a costume, putting on make up, taking poses and taking professional pictures of it is not art? That's like saying fashion, beauty, modeling and photography cannot be forms of art. i agree i like drawing with originality, and dont get me wrong i love japanese animation style, i draw it, but the so called "original" characters are normally just tracedrecolors. my definition of an original character is one from you own brain and not a recolor, ya kow an original story. im not saying it makes them a bad person its really just unoriginal and why limit ones self to tracing make you own original story it acutally comes out better.

I love DA and I go on it every other day. But I agree with the whole unoriginallity of art on the site. Even though I add some of the fan art to my favorites, it wouldn't kill the artists just to come up with their own characters. Also, the popularity stuff with pageviews reminds me of Facebook, with the whole popularity shit going on wtih kids and teens.
I create my own characters and post them on DA and I'm not dead. :)

That was great! Most somewhat serious artist I knew left (yah, including me) or became...you know..."popular" on the side. Truth be told: if you work in a traditional medium and do actual paintings (you know: on canvas with brush) you get almost no input and no reconaissance. I saw amazing artists there with almost no page views. The popularity goes to the dramaqueens, the anime rip offs and the furry perverts. Not an art side at all folks...

I do digital 3D and Freehand sketches. I post them on Deviantart for not just showing them, but to get some critiques so I can improve :P 2 years of being a member, and out of 107 posted Deviations, got 47 comments, 59 favourite and ONE constructive critique. Other peoples "work": Image of a plain pussy: No sign of art/photography related skills, no light, no composition just a pussy by itself. Result: 62 comments, 126 faves, quoted comment: "superb artwork n luv the model...thumbs up"..........

@sikereemedy I think I have a theory to why there are so many wolves on DA:take notice of the structure,form,and anotomy of a wolf.It's very simple and easy to manipulate and draw yet nice to look at.Unlike animals such as cats,humans,rodents and various species of bears.Basically,people who aren't gifted in drawing would be more willing to draw a wolf and draw it with as many colors,hairdo's,and patterns and still recieve undeserved credit for simplistic or boring work.

I'm a photographer and a premium member but my pageviews are as shitty as before. Not that it matters, but don't become a premium member for the pageviews.
Everytime I upload a new picture it DROWNS in fucking anime, ugly twilight related drawings, wolves, ponies, and just baaad snapshots of attention whoring emo kids.
And who the fuck wants to upload other people's work and take credit for them? Losers. They even steal original Disney stuff, for crying out loud.

I'm not a big fan of the rule 34: Frankly it disgusts me how someone can warp a child's cartoon into that, but as long as it has warnings, I'm willing to let it slide. As for photos on DA, I'm cool with that, as long as it's proper photography and not just a picture of your cat or something.

I don't understand how cosplay is not art? Making a costume, putting on make up, taking poses and taking professional pictures of it is not art? That's like saying fashion, beauty, modeling and photography cannot be forms of art. Even if it isn't that good, the site isn't reserved just for GOOD art, so using the term "for real artists" sounds very elitist. I agree on a lot of the rest though- especially about admins.

i agree i like drawing with originality, and dont get me wrong i love japanese animation style, i draw it, but the so called "original" characters are normally just tracedrecolors. my definition of an original character is one from you own brain and not a recolor, ya kow an original story. im not saying it makes them a bad person its really just unoriginal and why limit ones self to tracing make you own original story it acutally comes out better.

@TheStarTwinkle1 actually, many of the people who were "drac'd" did indeed have strong passwords. The hackers found a hole in the site that allowed them to access peoples' accounts. It was even stated by one of the hackers that they didn't use keyloggers and didn't attempt to guess the passwords, they found another way into the accounts through dA's crappy security.

Y'know, I loved DeviantArt at first when I joined back in 2007. I've earned everything on both of my accounts, fair and square. However the big shots that pay for the advertising and the pageviews get the audience that could have been yours, while your account wastes away.
One of the admins actually had the audacity to say that hacking pageviews was both illegal and pointless, because it's a worthless statistic. If it's worthless, why can we purchase them? Bullshit.

Well the bit about Llama badges I can explain. It was apparently an April Fools joke that people started sending Llama badges to each other. And due to their popularity with the users they decided to keep them. But I still don't know what there suppose to do apart from sit at the top of your screen and do nothing. Good rant though.
