I've been listening to this song for the past 13 or so years and I've never been able to find out what (if anything) "he drew a swallow on my neck" meant. Is it a British expression?
@jeffeastwood15 I think it's about what a swallow represents. Sailors from back in the day used to get it to show how many years they had been out at sea, amond other meanings. Look it up - it's really interesting.
I absolutely LOVE this song! However, I agree with previous commenter who said There is something much better about the album version. It's much sadder and more bittersweet. This is too 'rocking out' for this song. The whole point of Morrissey is that his song lyrics are very sad and ironic, yet the tunes are often cheerful and upbeat. The contrast is the statement.
i think this live version doesnt do the song justice, the one in the studio is like a glassey eyed love dream, but when i go to see morrissey live i dont care if he doesnt try to sound the same as on the record. mozzer concerts are more like pride rallys anyway
Morrissey always puts some of his best work hidden away as b-sides. It's fun because a big part of being a Morrissey fan is hunting down these rare gems.
Moz b-sides are very odd. Some are just so spectacular, that you wonder why the song isn't on the album. Others like Journalist who lie are silly jingles or a jam session. Ringleader had some great b-sides, same with Quarry as well. I can't wait to get my hands on the new ones this year.
I absolutely love, love, love this song! "Older and wiser never applies to me!"

This could have been a real hit as a single.
Oh well.

This is Moz's best B-side in my humble opinion

A great song indeed. But his best b-side for me is "You must please remember"
