i luv his last comment there: "its always been a part of the game, you know the game, i dont how old it is probably 75 years old...its always been a part of the game and i dont know y they wanna take it out now all of a sudden" TRUE
According to Tiger Williams and Bob's wife Dianne Gassoff. Sometime after Bob Jr. was born, and obviously after number 3 was killed in that motorcycle accident Dianne brought the baby down to one of the blues home games for the pregame warm up against the maple leafs. She gave the small infant to tiger and with both arms wrapped around Bob's son, he calmly skated around the rink several times talking softly and making funny faces to the baby. I have to admit, that story brought a tear to my eye.
this is from a video called "true blues". It was released on VHS in 1986, and im sure you can find a dvd copy of it online from some of the diehard blues fans. Unfortunately, there is very little footage of bob during his days with the blues. A fire at the STL arena in 1980 claimed a lot of the old blues footage from the 1970s. That was actually a news interview.
It's cool you are so proud of your uncle, and rightfully so. Had this accident never happened, he would have gone on for a long and successful career. With only a four year career, and over 30 years ago, he obviously made an impression on many to have people arguing and defending his talent...family or not. He was pretty darn good. period
Why are yous having a pissing match about how tough and good he was?? He was great....and one of the toughest and feared guys on the ice in those days. Often fighters in hockey are seen as goons, and don't get the recognition as great players....but Bob Gassoff was one helluva player too. I am proud to have played on the same ice surface as Bob Gassoff. Proudly born and raised in QUESNEL, B.C.!!

You tell me I don't know him? It says in your profile that you're 23 and he died 30 years ago. You don't know him any better than I do. In fact, I saw him play and you didn't so I know him better than you do.
Surely there has to be more footage of Bob Gassoff somewhere. I would especially love to see video of him playing against the Flyers and fighting Paul Holmgren. I remember him having ahold of the back of Holmgren's sweater and bashing Holmgren's head on the crossbar. That was in St. Louis. Next time, at Philly Spectrum, Holmgren was wearing a shield to protect an eye injury, and Gasser ripped it off, threw Holmgren to the ice and pummelled him. Where is that video?

He was one of the dirtiest players ever. I remember him taking a full baseball bat swing with his stick at Carol Vadnais' head. I was definitely not sorry to see him gone from the NHL.
Whoa thats a bit harsh now. The guy was an enforcer of the 70s. He also had a family that cared about him and he cared about. Kinda tasteless of you dont you think?
He swung that stick at Vadnais literally trying to kill him. Missed him by inches. He wasn't much concerned with Vadnais' family when he did that, was he? I've been watching hockey for 40 years and he still stands out as one of the most despicable players I've ever seen - and he only played 4 seasons. I'm sure that he would have ended other player's careers through his cheap shots and left the NHL in disgrace eventually.
he only played 4 years because he was killed in a car accident, in the 1970s you needed players like him, he was maturing into one of the finer blueliners like the Plagers who were mentoring him along the way, he took a lot of dumb pen. but he would have corrected that as he got exp.
great Plagers vid..Do you have the fight with keith Magnuson ? it was pretty funny, Magnuson had just learned karate and he was throwing chops at the Plagers, IT IS A CLASSIC
You've been watching hockey for 40 years and didn't know that Vadnais was well known as a stickman?? Ever think that THAT is why Gassoff swung a stick at him?
You're a fucking dunce. You know fuck all about anything, so quit typing nonsense about players you probably didn't even see, you ignorant cocksucker.
the big bad bruins feared bob gassoff, watch the Fred O"Donnell fight here..Where was John Wensink or O'reilly they should have been off the bench while their teammate was being mauled? ..and that was at Boston garden too..the bruins were "wannabe' tough guys
I don't see any Bruins in that clip at all. I also didn't see Gassoff mauling anyone. I didn't have a high opinion of Wensink as a fighter but I can't see he or O'Reilly being afraid of Gassoff unless Gassoff refused to drop his stick, which was always possible with him.
I was at most of those games at the old arena with my Dad ..I think Bob was the toughest player in his day and was one hell of a defensemen as well..I remember one game he took a severe cut tio the forehead...He was back in the same period with this huge gauze pad taped to his forehead....I enjoyed the games better then than now.....I do believe Schultz feared Gassoff.........
one of the best fights in history was in 77 when gassoff and grant mulvey of the hawks went at it for over a minute...both exchanged straight to the face punches...
i was in st louis playing in the 'gateway classic' that w/e bob was killed...lot of memories lost...in more ways than one.......
i watched bob play in juniors and he was tough all around i will always remember him laying out bob bourne who played for the blades in juniors with the best open ice body check.
One thing we can agree on. Bob was right up there with the all time great heavyweights like Probert and wilson, atleast those are my top 2. Such a shame that we have very little video availible on Gassoff, he was truly one of the greats.
I was stick boy in St Louis from 1976-1979 and Gasser was a very quiet guy and his wife was a really nice lady(I think her name was Diane). Gasser used to tease me about flirting with his sister in law who was younger. i would love to talk to you about Gasser. I am always available. My favorite number is #3 because of your Uncle
He would of been a legend had he lived longer. This guy was one MEAN SOB.
