Aren't the chest-thumper nationalists here missing a vital point? Casals cared less about a vaunted and ostensible 'nationality' than he did about MUSIC. It was MUSIC he served....it was his love of music and of nature that preserved him.

In June 1970, while attending one of the rehearsals of the Casals Festival at the UPR Theater, (I was a senior student), I had the honor of meeting him and Alexander Schneider, thanks to my political science professor Alfredo Matilla y Jimeno who also was exiled from Spain. He graciously signed me one of the programs which I still dearly keep. Casals was a genius, no doubt about it. I saw him later several times directing, others playing and that I will never forget.
