  • Aren't the chest-thumper nationalists here missing a vital point? Casals cared less about a vaunted and ostensible 'nationality' than he did about MUSIC. It was MUSIC he served....it was his love of music and of nature that preserved him.

  • such an artist, this is so inspiring because the violoncello is not an easy instrument. Thank you very much. Moltes gracies.

  • Thank you for videos you've uploaded here. Thanks so much!

  • Pablo in Spanish and Pau in Catalan!

  • amazing discipline

  • In June 1970, while attending one of the rehearsals of the Casals Festival at the UPR Theater, (I was a senior student), I had the honor of meeting him and Alexander Schneider, thanks to my political science professor Alfredo Matilla y Jimeno who also was exiled from Spain. He graciously signed me one of the programs which I still dearly keep. Casals was a genius, no doubt about it. I saw him later several times directing, others playing and that I will never forget.

  • The great humanist and Catalonian patriot Pablo/Pau Casals still exuding vitality and inspiration and the age of 95! Thank you for this clip.

  • Well done. Great doc.

  • RIP, Pau Casals.

  • PABLITO CLAVÓ UN CLAVITO, ¿QUE CLAVITO CLAVÓ PABLITO? IN SPANISH IDIOM

PAULITO CLAVÓ UN CLAVITO, ¿QUE CLAVITO CLAVÓ PAULITO? IN CATALAN DIALECT.

  • PAU PAU PAU

    PAU CASALS

nascut a catalunya i mort a puerto rico, exiliat republicà, català universal.

  • Who was the sculptor? Would this be the bust in the Casals museum , cited in Siblin's new book? - These are two of my immediate questions. Senor Casals was as powerful as a man in general as he was a musician, he has a definate say in the meanings of life- very uplifting- this posting gave me an elevated frame of mind that lasted for hours, and will linger forever. Thank you.

  • ...I can understand Pau Casals because he himself SUFFERED dictature, but let's not misunderstand the today's situation, please catalans, don't act like your enemy and destroy culture, , be smart, we have double treasure in catalonia:TWO languages. etc, , ..don't miss the oportunity.. don't let poiliticians and media tell you what to think, , what to hate, what is right and what is wrong, judge for yourselves, there's nothig bad in having two instead of one

  • the super-catalanist proclaims of this great master were originated because of the tremendous dictature he suffered; he had to leave catalonia because of the dictature, he and many many other intelectuals where persecuted in franco's time, for anybody living such unpleasant expierence is logical to develop an irrational hate to whatever has to do with Spain, but Spain is not Franco, totalitarism in Spain is over, allready for 34 years...

  • What a disciplin!!, he plays every day the

same pieces just to keep himself trained,

  • Please everyone that thinks Catalunya is Spain,YOU ARE WRONG!! CATALUNYA IS AN OCCUPIED NATION,PLEASE LOOK UP THE HISTORY OF CATALUNYA AND YOU WILL SEE THIS TO BE TRUE.HIS NAME IS PAU NOT PABLO.

  • Well Ï have catalan, madrilian and basque roots, I spent long whiles in Sabadell and Catalunya is NOT an OCCUPIED nation, when did a spanish army invade Catalunya? when they joined Aragon´s Crown in 1343? Please don´t come with the Franco thing now, cause they were invading the whole peninsula.

I don´t care if Catalunya is an independent country or not, its not my bussiness and I would always RESPECT their decision, but don´t change History because of politics.

  • u're so right swampman, catalan people , and the catalan parties talk about spain like a monstrus evil, like in time's of franco, ,parties try to chanche minds of the catalans, , they tend to critisize spaniards, they tend to say spaniards hate catalans , and to try to distroy them, , they try to believe catalonia is invaded, like poland in 1940,

  • they do this to contol the people for personal interest, there is no patriotic feelig in here at all, they try to convince people that spaniards are evil, that speaking spanish is evil, ( i'm overdramatic here, but that's the tendency) and what they are doing is killing a culture in stead of maintaing two great cultures,. i'm catalan, and i can say that this is true, they don't realise they are begining to behave in a totalitarist way, just like their eternal enemy

  • @juancillo Maybe you are living in catalonia, but you are not catalan. Your name is a prove that your family is spanish speaker (in catalan is JOAN). My grand mother was born and grown in Madrid, but now she is more independentist than me.

You wrote this before TC sentence from owr statute, so you can see that Spanish govt don't take care about catalan rights or about that rights that we voted by democratic referendum. This is not democracy and Catalonia will be the next state of Europe !!*!!

  • i wish i could have met this guy in person

  • Has anyone wondered what came of the clay sculpture made in this film? Could it be in someone's attic somewhere? Is it in a museum?

  • Calling him Pablo is an insult to his memory. He wanted to be called by his name, PAU, also because in catalan it means PEACE.

Please, I ask the maximum respect to the master

  • @Cibergoya do u know that he live half of his life in Puerto Rico and his mother was puertorrican?, he was called Pablo there, now think if he was alive what would really insult him.

  • What a wonderful man. Thank you very much for posting this!

  • "The spirit of Bach is in every note" (2:51) ... what wonderful words

  • Aquest home era un geni de Veritat.

  • it is Pau..he is referred to as Pablo sometimes as in some books...

for his time his playing was incomparable...perhaps still even now...

  • what an emotional find. Congratulations, and thank you from a cellist who still displays the LP cover of him walking away on the beach, as a one of my most treasured works of art. Pau's influence, and love, is still very much alive.

  • It's PAU Casals, not Pablo.

  • It's Pablo, everybody knows it...look at the recordings...

  • No you're wrong, his full name was Pau Casals i Defilló, but was known as Pablo Casals during his professional career. It was sort of an early 20th century stage name, but his real name was Pau.

  • I'm a catalan, like him, and everybody here knows that his name is Pau Casals

  • He's Pau. Pablo it's the translation in spanish, that fascist did. He was catalan not spanish. You can look for his speech at the United Nations.

  • totally agree with you, thecelloking -

    Pablo Casals radiates passion&compassion, beauty & joy. love&wisdom ... :)

  • not only the father of all cellist, but one of the greatest men to ever walk the earth. passion, love, compassion, and joy drip from this man.

  • No respecteu ni als morts!!!! PAU CASALS!!! Mai PABLO!

    PAU CASALS!!!!!!!!!

  • @Edelbroy Chill out. It is Pablo in Spanish, and after all, he was Spanish. It would be the same if someone wrote Paul Casals, ugly, but not disrespectful. I have seen many times things like Guillermo Shakespeare and I don't shout :-)

  • mii bad pua

  • He is PAU CASALS not PABLO

  • @enriccm

Who are you to speek in his name, do you know why he did it ? Thinking seems hard to you !

Identity is the premis of racism and war, we are fed up you're thinks !

  • @enriccm

  • How old was on the video?

  • 95 years of age

  • Many thanks for finding such a wonderful and long lost video of Casals. I had no idea it even existed. Again, profound thanks.

  • CATALONIA IS NOT SPAIN, AND PAU CASALS WAS A CATALAN. further informayion: search the video pau casals speech in the united nations.

  • umm srry but Catalonia is part of spain look it up

  • oh yeah, and Irak a part of USA.

  • no but puerto rico is just like catalonia is part of spain look it up. and i dont think pau had any problem being called pablo

  • ok, you know what? you should be a little more informed about what spain is and its History. Catalonia is not Spain, but stills occupied by Spain. it comes from more than 300 years ago.

  • if its occupied by spain its technically part of spain

  • well yes, as long as Irak is part of USA right now due to its occupation, and american imperialism and tyranny. Spanish Empire was no much different (including inquisition). I fight for a peacefull independence of Catalonia and Euskadi from Spain, and a closer integration in the European Union...

    Free Catalonia

  • its Iraq not Irak

  • great musician

  • he was CATALAN, not SPANIARD. Catalonia is not Spain, and his name was Pau, not Pablo.

  • GREAT MUSIC

  • PABLO CASALS, GREAT SPANISH ARTIST

  • Is it so difficult calling him by his name? PAU.

It is so frustrating having to find the best composer of my nation in the language that franco used to punish us... Identity is just one and the only one.

  • the name was not pablo casals, his name was

    PAU CASALS.

  • Wonderful, where can I watch this as a whole?
