STARSHIP.....; I didn't mention it because alot of people don't remember Starship tucked away in the corner off 42nd. BUT I DO!!! lol and infernos too, but I don't remember where Inferno's was.
I remember...I remember the coke dealers 5 deep in the men's room, Don Ray, Crown Heights Affair, Alex Costandinos, at the back of the Kinney System parking lot...
I was never into the drug scene, although alot of people apparently were. I was a collegiate basketball player on scholarship at Monmouth University at the time... I could be wrong but my hustle friends weren't into drugs either. I did notice coke getting really big later in the 80's though.
I didn't say I was "into it" either, but do you honestly mean to say that you didn't notice drug dealers literally FIVE DEEP in the men's room openly and vocally hawking their wares? I hope you didn't major in anything requiring keen powers of observation. Better still, the DEA isn't going to kick in your door because you saw someone dealing thirty years ago. C'mon man, what New York were you in, a movie set?
. . . what can I say... maybe I just never noticed it. I remember people doing "poppers" in plain view on the dance floors in Asbury Park, NJ clubs. I think I was just so much into dancing and hustling that it wasn't in my scope of observation. None of my girlfriends at the time were into "partying" either. I do remember "blow" being very prevalent at "The Executive Suite" after hours club in Queens near LaGuardia.
Now THAT is Hustlin'. . . . brings me right back to 1979-1981 . . . NY, NJ, Philly. ,. . Roseland, Brothers 3, Fountain Casino, Uncle Sams, DeCameron's, Copa, LaBamba's. . . If you didn't Hustle in those clubs in the 70's 80's ya kinda missed the boat.
So since you're obviously from the NYC, I'll mention the clubs that I really used to go to back in the day: LaBamba, Roseland, NewYork, NewYork, Ones, Garage, Loft, Downunder, Copas (60th st), Marcos (45st), Leviticus, Pegasus, BEntleys, IcePalace57. and those were just the Manhattan spots.
Not that I forgot them, but by the time Palladium and 1018 was poppin, hustle was disappearing. I wasn't a big Garage or Funhouse or Danceteria fan; not that they weren't excellent clubs.
You are right about your music era timing history. I was big into dancing. No doubt that New York has history of some of the best dance clubs in the World!
