That scene would have given the movie a much sweeter, moral and uplifting ending. However, it would also have dramatically changed the story from the book that the movie is based on, in which the character Rebecca Sharp is cruel and has no love for her son.

I personally like both the book and the movie, the book because of its fascinating depiction of a ruthlessly manipulative and cold-hearted woman, and the movie for its all-around excellent acting and complex characters.

well this is an adaptation of the classic novel and not a very good one at that. But even in the book, Rawdon Jr (the role he played) does not really come out until much later and isnt really a big character. The character is really young for the most part. Not much of grownup Rawdon Jr. so maybe thats why.
