I just noticed something interesting. At 0:42, the guy's arm gets blown off, but there is no blood spatter on the walls or the pillow. At 0:44, the walls and the pillow are covered in blood.
@TheKenfig Except your theory isn't consistent with the story at all. The counter guy being "nosy" wasn't that bad, that's why he gave him the chance to live with the coin toss.. and he knew the sheriff was good, that's why he didn't kill him at the end.
@TheNile182 Dude seriously? Some shot guns actually hold more than 1 round. He isnt reloading because his shot gun is holding more than one round. SIIIGH... SMH...
@hornibastrd A sound suppressor- especially one that small even though it's huge, it's tiny compared to what would be needed to effectively quiet a shotgun- would still never get a shotgun quiet enough to not wake up people in that tiny motel in the middle of the night. No way. It is really badass in the film, though.
@Champ721 My cousin Vic was a prop maker for this film. They made the suppressor short so that Anton would be able to walk around with his arms at his sides while carrying the gun as opposed to him having to carry it around with his arms up thereby making his stature 'appear' more defensive.
They wanted him to appear confidant and relaxed about what he was doing by being completely open. But the cost of the fictitious prop was well worth these small details about the character, don't you think?
"The Joker" IS overrated. Kudos to you.So is the movie itself
However there are better psychos in movies than a comicbook caricature like Hand Landa and a really satiric one like Patrick Bateman(who is pretty far-fetched)
I think Daniel Plainview (There Will Be Blood),Archibald Cunningham (Rob Roy), Clarence Boddicker (Robocop), Alex De Large (A Clockwork Orange), Mr.Blonde (Reservoir Dogs) are truly sadistic and cold psychopaths
please tell me you guys aren't that stupid. this is a character of silence. A sociopathic soft-spoken no foot-step noise making villain. so of course he uses a silencer.
In the book the silencer was a coffee can. He was a lot more vicious, psychotic and down right scary in the book. Props to the Coen Brothers....best movie since Fargo. btw....I just saw True Grit, No Country was a lot better.
@NightTimeRightTime No thats incorrect. In the novel, it is described as "a shopmade silencer fully a foot long and big around as a beercan," it wasn't literally a can.
Under normal circumstances, a man with a bowl cut, carrying an oxygen tank around in his socks would just be ridiculous, but this guy turned out to be something... lol
I find it kind of weird that people are fascinated with anton chigurh. Honestly, this dude is a cold blooded merciless killer. No remorse, with no value for human life.
And its sad to see people looking at him like he is some kind of hero.
He is not a hero- He is a cold blooded killer................
Id actually shit myself if this psycho was after me seriously, no other film has made me feel this way, this guys also funny at the same time its amazing
I mean, Moss hadn't seen combat in almost 20 years and he almost killed Chigurh...missed him by centimeters!! I bet Anton HAD NEVER been hit either.
He's not that much of a bad ass, you just have to be smart enough and committed enough to kill him. I would also bet that if Wells hadn't wasted his time with Moss and gone after Chigurh immediately, he would have gave him a run for his money as well, but he was too vain and sure of himself.
I've discussed this character many times with others and we came up with several ways to kill this man. Firstly, his opponents are either clumsy(Carson Wells), don't have a clue what they're up against(wealthy Texan businessman/drug dealer) or just have a habit of being alone when he gets there!
You can kill him by either: 1. Getting a group of guys to wait for him(who already know he's coming) 2. putting a bomb at your door and 3. Ramming your car into his when he's at his most vain.
@cityofwalls It doesn't matter whether the others he may have killed were in some way better than Moss...I bet Wells could have killed Moss as well, so we do have a sense of how dangerous and skillful Chigurh is compared to Moss. But that scene at the hotel is proof that Chigurh can be defeated, even if it is simply because of careless mistakes. No piece if meat can be kept from spoiling forever, but some pieces do spoil more slowly than others!
@Baracudaflaps You're right in that he pulled over the curtain to protect himself from blood. However, in addition to that, he looked away. I don't believe it was because he felt bad, but it definitely had a deeper reasoning.
@w4rrior723 The thing about him I thought for the first time watching this on tv tonight, even though I've got the dvd and seen it a few times, is he's the same as The Terminator really isn't he ?. Although of course he's 'human' for want of a better word and so more chilling and believable
@TheKenfig hmmm, not at all, actually. They're completely different other than maybe their demeanor. But their motivations and thought processes are completely different. Chigurh has unique "principles". He believes that people are generally bad and they are never held accountable for the inexcusable things they do. He believes he must dispense justice to preserve the integrity of our race.
@w4rrior723 Because he is a human ; Terminator doesnt have thoughts because he's a robot, but they are both relentless and indiscriminate killing machines. I dont know if he thinks he is cleaning up our race ; I dont think he cares who he kills and 'justifies' it because he just enjoys killing anyone. If he thinks all people are bad, why does he want to preserve 'integrity' by killing everyone ? ; that's a contradiction
@TheKenfig What is a contradiction? It's pretty obvious throughout the whole movie that he only kills people who he believes do bad things (with the exception of the counter guy at the motel, because he was in his way) and values those who are good. That is why he gave Llewelyn the option to save his wife.. because he believes people who do bad things should be punished, and he believes he is the one who needs to do it.
@w4rrior723 Because he makes it up as he goes along to 'justify' his need to cold bloodedly execute. He knew Moss could not take the choice of merely giving himself to him,not because Chighur is right about him betraying his own wife, but because Moss in his situation hopes he can resolve things without getting himself killed ; he's not just going to die when he thinks he can save both himself AND his wife and he cant trust Anton anyway.Anton makes his own rules to suit himself & kills innocents
@TheKenfig Except your theory isn't consistent with the story at all. The counter guy being "nosy" wasn't that bad, that's why he gave him the chance to live with the coin toss.. and he knew the sheriff was good, that's why he didn't kill him at the end.
@w4rrior723 I that about YOURS ! ; not merely to be difficult or argumentative, but it doesn't fit entirely with the fact that his victims (and by the ratio scale we're provided with in the length of the story we can say at least one) are not all bad and more importantly, have given him no REASON TO ASSUME they've done anything bad as he knows NOTHING about them. You have to concede he kills for pure desire even when it isnt necessary e.g. 'bolt gun guy' for his car and 'chicken crate man'
@TheKenfig You're not being difficult. I always enjoy a good debate.
But as I said before, the only time he ever kills people when he doesn't believe they did anything wrong is if they are in the way of him serving greater justice. Moss was a complete scumbag, which is why he was determined to kill him.
@w4rrior723 They aren't though ; that chicken crate man we didnt see wasted but it was implied that he was, was a guy trying to help him get his car started and nothing more. He didnt try to get in his way ; he went OUT of his way to help Anton. That guy he murdered just for his car wasn't in his way either. He just attempts to 'justify' what he does by making his own obtuse and vague 'philosphies' as excuses to deal out 'justice', like Kelly herself says to him, "the coin don't have no say...."
@crabfight From his eyes, he had to. He put Moss in a position where he could save her, but he chose the slim chance of saving his own life over definitely saving her life. If he weren't to follow through with it, that would defeat the whole purpose of making Moss decide it in the first place. It's a similar stunt the Joker would pull. I'm not saying I agree with his methods, but you have to try to look at it from his point of view if you want to understand it.
This scene is one that reveals a bit more about Anton's character. Since he closes the shower curtain and turns his head away when he shoots the last guy, it implies that he not enjoy killing. The killing is just the most efficient way for him to get the job done. Although, I don't know why he would needlessly threaten the gas station attendants life, unless its just because he is an agent of fate.
@plasticbarf He closed the shower curtain to avoid getting blood spatter on himself, not because he didn't want to see it. He just wasted two guys before that without so much as a blink. Plus, if he disliked killing, he wouldn't be a hit man.
He's not the fucking Joker, he's the god damned Chigurh.
@plasticbarf He doesn't enjoy it or hate it. It's what he does and he doesn't have a problem. He makes money. The gas attendant was just him instilling fear into people.
Part of being a hitman also involves not getting caught, and I think walking around covered in blood may arouse suspicion :) hence the curtain used and moving his face away.
Exceptional performance tho! He scared the shit out of me
One of the best villains ever portrayed on the big screen. Javier Bardem did such an amazing job with this character. His gaze alone sends chills down the spine...
@InfamousBlocker if people have been doubting you tell them they are illiterate morons. In the book "no country for old men" by Cormac McCarthey, the same book that this movie is based off of, it is clearly spelled out on more than one page, "silenced shotgun." illiterate morons...
It's not a shotgun. It's a device they use to kill cattle. It fires an attached metal rod out (I believe) that pierces the target, then returns to the gun.
The only thing unrealistic about this weapon is that the shotgun wasn't invented at this time (The movie takes place in the 1980s) and a silencer on a shotgun would STILL be really loud.
shotguns have been around for literally hundreds of years. I know you are probably getting lots of replies on this but the idiocy of the statement requires it, and yes they had semi auto shotguns pre-1980's.
i've often wondered why they were both in the bathroom... anyway a good comment earlier about the similarity between 'anton' and 'ed tom'... the book doesn't clarify but i thought the same thing, that they are opposite sides of the same coin.
I've seen a lot of debating on the correct pronunciation of Chigurh's last name, but his first name intrigues me more. It's sounds a lot like Ed Tom, the one played by Tommy Lee Jones. I've heard a few good thoughts on why that is, but the one that struck me the most was one that suggested that they are opposite sides of the same coin, so to speak. They can be as close as possible to one another, but can never truly meet face to face. Given what happens in the film, I think that makes sense.
can someone remind me how anton chigurh is pronounced i've been looking for a video on youtube for like 10 minutes just to see if anyone says it aloud
@ldahoe then jason bourne would walk in, counting the steps from the center of the room, and the world would see what happens when an unstoppable force meets an immovable object
Just for fun, I might let him try to kill me if he existed. "Why won't you die?!" Because I'm not a human monkey like you, Anton. *slice*

The captive bolt pistol is what he uses to shoot out the lock on the door. Thats a suppressed shotgun he is using to slaughter those fools.
arodaman 2 years ago
Dumbasses, why dont you search suppressed shotgun on youtube. They have videos of people firing them and it works it just has to be .410.

Javier Bardem did such an amazing job with this character. Just with the stare the guy could send chills down your spine...

And its not a cattle prod, its a captive bolt-pistol.
needleskane94 2 years ago
For a shotgun to be silenced you would have to reduce the amount of gunpowder and hand-load the bullets.
needleskane94 2 years ago
they had auti matic shotguns since WW1
gunthehun 2 years ago
Don't be so ridiculous , 1700's the shotgun was invented with a five round rotating chamber. 1980. Prat.
fuckinhurryupwillyou 2 years ago
EVERYBODY LISTEN!! IT IS A SILENCED SHOTGUN!
You can see the ejected shell at 1:55. and when the part he kills the lawyer, i saw the shell eject, so it has to be a silenced shotgun.
InfamousBlocker 2 years ago 7
Thtat's right, it is a silenced shotgun, as per the novel.. how many shells do you think it would carry????..
TRISTANBRAKE 2 years ago
Some idiots think it is a version of the cattle prod but it isn't. It is a silenced shotgun.
jupiter0225 2 years ago
@InfamousBlocker
Yeah obviously, he has the 'captive bolt pistol' which he murders a couple of people by the road and shoots the locks of doors.
and in the other hand he has a sound-suppressed 'Remington 1100', (that what it appears to be).

@InfamousBlocker if people have been doubting you tell them they are illiterate morons. In the book "no country for old men" by Cormac McCarthey, the same book that this movie is based off of, it is clearly spelled out on more than one page, "silenced shotgun." illiterate morons...

i would never fuck with this guy because somehow he would track you down and kill you without reason, dam bardem did a great portrayal

Chigurh used customized Remington 1100 shotgun.

Isn't it an 11-87? Same as the GTA 4 Combat Shotgun if I remember correctly. Barely a difference though, so meh.

Shotgun sounds powerfull, looks to me like an automatic shotgun as I did not see Anton 'pump' the shotgun.
cold blooded like a hitman should be.

The lighting in the first seconds of this clip is one of the best ever.
p3st1337 2 years ago
It's not a shotgun. It's a device they use to kill cattle. It fires an attached metal rod out (I believe) that pierces the target, then returns to the gun.
St4rGirl101 2 years ago
than why can you here the shot gun shells hit the floore??
poopchunk3 2 years ago
I'm pretty sure its a shotgun with a silencer. However, the device he uses to blast out the lock is the cattle pistol thing.
floppydisk909 2 years ago
This comment has received too many negative votes show
Damn that shotgun was something serious even tho' u cant put a silencer on it. Fucking Hollywood type shit.
dejonal 2 years ago
In the book he described how he made a silencer for the shotgun so I wouldn't criticize Hollywood for that :)
coyotefever105 2 years ago
You said you couldnt put a supressor on a shotgun.
You can.
johnnylightning258 2 years ago 2
You CAN put a silencer on a shotgun.
The only thing unrealistic about this weapon is that the shotgun wasn't invented at this time (The movie takes place in the 1980s) and a silencer on a shotgun would STILL be really loud.
Inferfire 2 years ago
waitwaitwaitwait....did you just say that the shotgun wasnt invented until 1980? please tell me youre kidding
led0zeppelin1977 2 years ago 19
The type of shotgun model he has wan't invented yet.
Inferfire 2 years ago
@Inferfire
history lesson
shotguns have been around for literally hundreds of years. I know you are probably getting lots of replies on this but the idiocy of the statement requires it, and yes they had semi auto shotguns pre-1980's.
mignaultj 2 years ago
in the book it's even gorier, the first guy is shot 3 times really fast and leaving his upper body "spread on the wall" ouch!

i've often wondered why they were both in the bathroom... anyway a good comment earlier about the similarity between 'anton' and 'ed tom'... the book doesn't clarify but i thought the same thing, that they are opposite sides of the same coin.

This guys the terminator
Banminator 2 years ago 4
I've seen a lot of debating on the correct pronunciation of Chigurh's last name, but his first name intrigues me more. It's sounds a lot like Ed Tom, the one played by Tommy Lee Jones. I've heard a few good thoughts on why that is, but the one that struck me the most was one that suggested that they are opposite sides of the same coin, so to speak. They can be as close as possible to one another, but can never truly meet face to face. Given what happens in the film, I think that makes sense.

oh im sure him and hannibal lecter would have a deep philosophical conversation
until hannibal loses the cointoss
ldahoe 2 years ago 12
Lecter would probably find Chigurh a simpletone and bore carrying some supressed frustration of some sort
it's possible though he wouldn't be able to make any sense out of Chigurh since he is hardly thinking the way normal people do

@ldahoe then jason bourne would walk in, counting the steps from the center of the room, and the world would see what happens when an unstoppable force meets an immovable object

When someone says "Anton Chigurh", the first thing I think of is his silenced shotgun. The haircut comes second.

he reminds me of Ajax from the warriors
thesk8warrior 2 years ago
yeah, only Ajax thought with his dick and had a one-track mind, which meant he screwed up in the park
Chigurh does look somewhat like Ajax though
