A lot of what made the original creepy and suspenseful was the lack of color. Hitchcock chose to shoot in black and white for a reason, even though color film had already become available. The overuse of color (okay.....and the not-so-great acting) in this newer version takes away a ton of the "pizazz" and darkness that the original had. Just my opinion.

The rights of Hitchcock's films were acquired in 1997 or 1998 by Universal and they began remaking the films in order to pay tribute to the late Alfred Hitchcock on his Centennial Birthday in 1999. The Psycho 1998 remake was just to pay homage to the original film.

@MultiJames95 I don't think that is right - there were 3 sequels produced in the 1980s, 2 that were in theatres and 1 that was a made for TV movie (the best sequel imo). A pilot for a possible tv-series was also made but has never been released to DVD to my knowledge. The films starred Anthony Perkins the TV pilot did not. In 1998, after Van Sant won the academy award he had carte blanche to do whatever he wanted and one thing he wanted to do was a shot for shot remake of Psycho.

Totally unneeded remake. For years I tried to figure out why I hated this so much-was it Anne or Vince or Van Sant?? I think the fact that it was in colour had alot to do with it. Hitchcock's variation of black and white was one of the best parts of the original-so much is conveyed without saying AS much. I have always been intrigued by the greatness of minimalism and lack of colour. Turns our focus 100% to the ambiance/emotion...and terror.

Gotta love Van Sant's obsession with timelapse shots of clouds. He even managed to shoe-horn it into one of the most infamous murder scene in film history for no apparent reason :D

I'm a huge fan of Gus Van Sant but didn't like this film. It's a cut by cut remake but fail to capture the essence of the original. But you have to admire him for doing this. Recreating a Hitchcock film is just asking for trouble. You can't recreate the work of a master even if you copy it down to the finest detail.

I think that it was a fun movie, and is cool that even the daughter of Hitchcock was happy and jokin about this idea... the mistake in this film is the cast: Vince V. as Norman Bates is a big, big mistake.
