Visit youtube.com/watch?v=rA6kbSEmNU4 and view the different variations of the "Petticoat Junction" opening sequence, all in one place, along with notes that explain why changes were made. Many common questions are answered here!
Well in the earlier black and white opening, there was no dog at all. He was added when the show went to color.
Also in season 4, the opening with the girls in the water tower had to be re-shot again as Meredith took over the Billie Jo character from Gunilla Hutton. HOWEVER... the scene where the girls climb down from the tower to great the Cannonball was never again refilmed. So even after Meredith Macrae had taken over the role, that STILL Gunilla Hutton in the long shots!
Yes I have ME TV too, and it's great to see this series again. You know doubt noticed that when Meredith took over the role and when Mike Minor joined as Steve at the same time, "Petticoat Junction" became a truly different series, as there was more significant singing and musical performances than ever before. I'm sure you noticed that singing became more common from season 4 onward. In the earlier, pre-Meredith shows, the emphasis was more on slapstick comedy.
@cmulwee001 YesI did notice. I was born the year this premired, so I can't remember anything but reruns. I also noticed that Mike Minor was really in fact Mike Fedderson, the oldest son of one of the producers. He had a younger brother Gregg who was Cissy Davis boyfriend on Family Affair. Mike is in his 60s now, but Gregg is no longer with us.I liked Mike's singing too, and of course Meredith's. To me he sounded a little like Tony Bennett.I think the toddler playing Kathy Jo was cute.
Kathy Jo was played at first, by twins Heather And Barbara Whiter during her birth and for the rest of season 6.
For the seventh, and final season, the more familiar Kathy Jo, the red-headed Elna Danielle Hubbell took over.
As you know sitcom kids, is that they don't age in real time. So I'm guessing if there had been an eighth season; they would have gotten and even older kid to play the part. So Kathy Jo would then probably be four or five years of age and would be able to talk!
@cmulwee001 I know. This is the way they do it on soap operas too. I remember when Family Matters came on. Telma Hopkins had baby Ritchie, then in season 2 they aged him as a five year old, played by the young man who is now on The Young and Restless and as a crazy coincidence, his TV uncle is also on The Young and Restless playing Malcom Winters.
Gunilla Hutton was Billi Jo #2, and by far the sexiest of the 3 Billi Jo's. Lori Saunders, Bobbi Jo #2 was pretty damn cute too. Bea Benaderette had the role of Kate, created for her. She had tried out for the role of "Granny" on Beverly Hillbillies, but lost out to Irene Ryan. the show was total entertainment, good ol' escapeism. Too bad todays tv didn't take lessons !!!!
@slcrawford2003 Yeah, it's really too bad that mindless TV hasn't caught on like it did in the old days. Have you seen the old Petticoat Junction reruns? The plots are ridiculous. The women are beautiful but the jokes are embarrasing.
Actually about Bea almost playing Granny, based on the story that I've heard, she WAS offered the part, but she told them she's gladly play a different character (that other role ended up being Cousin Pearl) ,and that only one person could be Granny, and that was Irene Ryan, and she was right.
This intro is not season 2 - it is season 3. The first two seasons were Black and White. You can check any episode guide on the internet if you are in doubt.
Thank's for the good memories just now:):):):):). Always loved this show and never missed an episode. I remember after the show went off the air my friends and i would peddle ours bike's downtown and stare at the Cannonball w-tender through the giant plate glass windows at the Old Hoyt Hotel & Barbary Coast Lounge, on Broadway St. in Portland,Oregon in the early 70's. I will never forget those trips or how REALLY BIG that locomotive seemed to be when i was 13 and in junior high.
This is from the THIRD season (the first two were in black and white)--when Lori Saunders and Gunilla Hutton took over Bobbie Jo and Billie Jo, respectively. There is a Facebook campaign to bring season 3 and beyond to DVD--if you love the show, please come join!
I asked my mother she said that trains used to run on wood back in the old days, I guess the water was for the boiler? Then they ran on coal. So that was not the towns drinking water the girls and Higgins the dog swam in.
This theme song is the reason for my scar on my forehead. When I was three I could not resist the urge to dance when this show came on. Hence, my head met with the corner of the coffee table during a rigorous dance session.
*All in All? Linda Kaye/ BettyJo was ALWAYS my favourite. She was pretty, funny and had the most personality OUT OF ALL OF EM! Also, i Luv Redheads! Unlike 4Blonde BillieJos, and 2Brunette BobbiJos, there was only 1 Redheaded BettyJo from 1963 to 1970! Miss Linda Kaye Henning!
@minnowtrappermd Sharon Tate did not appear nude in PLAYBOY until March 1967!!
I don't know who started the myth that she had posed nude before March 1967, but it's false. The series producer felt she had major potential as a motion picture actress instead. Mr. Ransahoff had groomed Sharon Tate for films and changed his mind about casting her in PETTICOAT JUNCTION.
*Well, roy5, unlucky 4 u, i did my HOMEWORK! Sharon Tate was indeed the original Billie Jo, in 1963, there are pictures to prove it! Not only was she on this pilot, she also filmed a few episodes, before she left the show, on advice from her agent. The pilot, as well as the episodes were shelved. See what happens when u actually get off ur BUTT 2 learn something, instead of taking heresay advice?
Lori Saunders, wasnt she a knockout? She played Bobbie Jo,the brunette middle child, in all the colour episodes, from 1965 to 1970. If theyre in black/white, then, it was Pat Woodell, equally gorgeous as the original Bobbie Jo, from 1963 to 1965.
Is that what Gunilla said? Hmmm... Poor starstruck Roy... Does anyone know whether or not the original Billie Jo, Sharon Tate was featured on the Petticoat Junction series pilot?
Did you guys know that the blonde up above, Gunilla Hutton, playing Billie Jo,for only 1 season, was in real life, Nat King Coles Mistress?! The press got wind of it, so they had to fire her. I mean, a dead married Black mans mistress? In 1965?! They got Jungle Fever before the phrase was even coined!
@shangrila1964 Are you sure it's the second season? Because the second season of this show would have been in 1964 - 65 season (the show itself, a spinoff of The Beverly Hillbillies, started in the 1963 - 64 season. I don't think CBS did that much color broadcasting of their programs until the 1967 - 68 season (at the earliest 1966 - 67 season.) And from the outfit that Bea Benaderet wears at :31 as she comes out of the Shady Rest this looks more like 1967 or so. (I also kind of remember
@sneezyize this, seeing that I was born in 1963, and would have been old enough to remember the 3 TV networks at the time change to color programs. I would think this would be from the show's 5th season in 1967 - 68, but would have probably been the opening until it's last & 7th season in 1969 - 70.)
Paul Henning was the head writer on the Burns & Allen TV Show in the 1950, when Benaderette played Blanche Morton. When Henning created "The Beverly Hillbillies" he created the Pearl Bodine part for Bea, and then put her into the role of Kate Bradley the following year. That also forced her to give up voicing Betty on "The Flinstones," just as the TV work for B&A forced Benaderette to seed her role as the main female voice on Warner Bros. cartoons to June Foray in 1955.
Nobody thinks its weird that the Petticoat Junction girls (and their dog) bathe or are skinny dipping in the towns water supply?? It's kinda HOTT, really.
Probably was, cuz its the country, they most likely use wells out there in Hooterville, atleast they did in Green Acres as seen in the season 2 episode "water, water everywhere"
@shangrila1964 What difference does it make? It's water! They could swim in it, and then put it in the locomotive, it wouldn't hurt anything. Not sure I would want to drink it after three women had went swimming in it but - no, wait, yes I would!
The train the cannoball is fromn the Sierra Railway in Sonora California, also used in the wild wild west. It is now a California State Park Railtown 1887, and you can actually ride the on the Cannonball pulled train on weekends.
Great old show. Funny thing when I was a kid watching this, i didnt' get what the girls were doing. They were skinny dipping in the water tower! Didn't figure that out til years later.
I wonder how many people know the past credits of Bea Benaderette and Edgar Buchannan prior this television series Bea died prior to the ending of the series and a a stunt double was used during the last season. June Lockhart's role as the "country" doctor was added to the show.
Bea was the voice of Betty Rubble on the Flintstones. She also appeared in some I love Lucy episodes and Beverly Hillbillies and Green Acres. I'm sure there were many many other credits but I have told you all I know. Yeah, the show just wasn't the same after her passing , I did not care for the whole June Lockhart/Country doctor scenario, but thats just me. Nice talking to you, take care.
@shangrila1964 Lots of people didn't care for the concept of the "lady MD" character on Petticoat Junction. In 1972, when they cancelled the show (along with Hee Haw, The Beverly Hillbillies and Green Acres, in one fell swoop) they may have done it to lose all the rural themed shows, but they would have ended up axing Junction anyway due to its abysmal ratings in its last 2 seasons. The other 3 shows I named were all in the Nielsen Top 30 shows at the time they were cancelled.
@shangrila1964 Yep she was Jethro's mom. Pearl on the HillBillies....Farthest back I remeber her was as Burns and Allens neighbor on their sitcom.....she's a great one...i like June LockHart too but she's no Kate
@decemberschild1217 Bea Bernadett was also the voice of Betty Rubble on "The Flintstones" as well. June Lockhart came into the picture after the passing of Ms. Bernadette, I believe.
