I can't decide which Doctor I prefer between Matt and David. Both are great! Christopher was the first Doctor I was introduced to in 2005 and I still like him!
But being the teenager I am: I find it difficult to watch the older episodes (1963-1996) of Doctor Who so I do not have an opinion on Tom Baker. But none-the-less I have nothing but respect for those older episodes! Good ol' entertainment for my Mum when she was a kid! ^_^
Slightly different 'best Doctor' list from an older geek (I'm 53 and have watched Dr Who from the very beginning with William Hartnell...
1: Matt Smith
2: Jon Pertwee
3: Tom Baker
4: David Tennant
5: Patrick Troughton
The rest are a bit of a toss-up for me - I could never get my head round Sylvester McCoy. I put Pertwee above the great Tom Baker because he brought a complete new style to the Doctor and introduced the flamboyance to the character that we now take for granted.
There are two Doctors that no one will ever be able to top, David Tennant and Tom Baker. Tom Baker is to Doctor Who what Sean Connery is to James Bond (set the standard), and David Tennant basically is that to the young Whovians.
My advice for Matt Smith: Get a Scottish accent. Eleven is my favorite Doctor, and Matt is truly awesome, but so long as David keeps his Scottish "r"s he will never fall too far behind.
Everyone's favourite Doctor is their first one, that's one of the reasons why Tennant is so loved because there was such a gap between the previous set and Ecclestone never really got going. But Matt Smith is fantastic, completely different character to Tennant's doctor but equally as fantastic. He had big shoes to fill and he's certainly done that for me
@cheesyhtfc I disagree. My first Doctor was Eccleson, but of the Doctor Who that I've watched, he is my least favorite. As much as I love David Tennant, I have to say Matt Smith is probably the Doctor I'm most attached to. I am going to cry like a small child when he goes.
I fuckin love Matt smith, but he will never be as amazing as David Tennant. David tennant is nothing short of amazing. I love the 10th and 11th doctors almost equally.... almost..
Personally, Matt Smith is my favorite doctor, probably from the fact that he was the first I saw (I had the misfortune of not knowing about doctor who until about a year ago), but I have seen David Tennant and I adore him also. The major contributing factor in all this though is the storylines. I think Moffat put a lot of creativity into the fifth and sixth series and I felt that these were slightly more 'other worldly' than tennants which felt a little more 'down to earth.' I LOVE BOTH, however
Matt has this like...energy in him that makes him just almost ADHD like! Dave is more "think, think, think, RANDOM OUTBURST" which I love ya Matt but I just like David's version better :\ I still like ur's though :D LONG LIVE DA TIME LORDS! I -3 little Scottish Doctor Who's :3
I think Matt is an awesome doctor! David is great too! All the people who just started getting into the series (me as well) probably make up for all those who don't like Matt. He has a hard role to play so its difficult to get appreiciation from fans. So they really shouldnt be so hard on him.
I appreciate matts verison of the doctor honestly I can't help but to think what the new season would have looked like if david had stuck around a lil bit longer though
yeah I agree with most of you; I think it was really nice of David to say that stuff about Matt (even though it's not like he's gonna bag the next Doctor at Comic Con!) and I wish the fans could have taken Matt better. Frankly I love both of them!
@rioluluvlucario whilst it's gotten a bit more grown up humour-wise, you have to admit it's also becoming more appealing to younger viewers. Just look at the Dalek's new 'retro' look and I think you'll agree. Not that I have any problem with your opinion, I also thought that the Rose storyline was good, but I think that they ended it at the right time, before it got stale.
You know, its impossible to compare the 9th 10th and 11th Doctor (to me) because theyre all so different. I'm really gonna miss David Tennant as the Doctor. Great shoes (converse). Love him! So sad because they've gotten rid of my three favorites: Christopher Eccleston, Billie Piper, and David Tennant T_T
@ImWeirdAndILikeIt They didn't get rid of anyone. (Well, maybe they decided to write off Billie's character; I'm not too sure, though) but the actors chose to leave. It's been like that since the very beginning. The First Doctor left because of health issues due to his age, which is why the writers gave the Time Lords the ability to Regenerate. (At least this is how I understand the origins of the concept).
I think Matt is a really good actor etc..... And so was David but I just prefer David's doctor. I liked the Doctor/Rose storyline and I'm not sure about the new series so far it seem a bit dark. I also think it's getting a bot more 'grown up' as it seems to contain a lot of innuendoes. But there's nothing I can do to bring back David's doctor so I'm just going with it! No disrespect to anyone else or Matt Smith this is just my opinion!
@rioluluvlucario It's interesting that you should bring up the series getting darker. Granted, season 6 has taken a pretty...well, REALLY dark turn, but I think as far as the Doctor himself goes, Matt Smith's Doctor has left behind a lot of the angst of David Tennent's. Don't get me wrong, I love Tennant, always have. But I think the writers forced angst on the Tenth Doctor more than was appropriate or pleasant. Eleven has a bit more of a childish charm to him, which IMO is refreshing.
Thank you well said I have finally found someone who likes Matt for the doctor, everywhere I go I hear in my face "Matt is rubbish because he is bad actor, too young to be him, never live up to David, he replaced David, he's ugly and etc I just hate that!
Why can't people face the fact that David is gone for good and he WANTED to quit? Those people are pathetic and don't want to move on until Matt is gone or something, I find them incredibly childish
i think that Davids come across as bitter and a little hateful towards Matt in other interviews but i have to say that here he has been quite the gentleman towards Matt x x
@AsphodelsAce Maybe I should clarify, there's "polite" and there's "Genuine." From what I feel with Tennant's comments about Matt, they're genuine. I don't think he's saying it just so people will be happy, I think he truly feels it. I haven't felt that way with other actors and their successors (other shows, not really here), so it is still refreshing.
tennant knew what he was doing when he left. if he was there for much longer, doctor who would've turned into another tom baker. and tom baker was a great doctor who ruined the old doctor series.
it was time for him to leave the show that was designed to change lead actor all the time. and matt smith, twelveth, thirteenth (and hopefully more) will all be BLOODY BRILLIANT!
David Tennant. Excellent Doctor, classic gentlemen. I do hope he comes back for the 50th Anniversary because I would love to see him and Matt Smith team up.
@lkgrave I wonder how they would to that. either they make them meet in the same style as tennant and the fifth doctor(forgot his name) met, or if they bring back the meta crisis clone.
@Arthus850 Probably similar to one of the multi-Doctor episodes they've done during the classic series. But if they do a special like Time Crash, it'll be fine by me.
@Arthus850 Like I said, However they do it is fine by me. After all, Tom Baker should have done at least one solo scene with Peter Davison to 'pass the torch,' Matt Smith deserves one with David Tennant.
I think it says a LOT for Tennant as an actor and a gentleman to give nothing but praise and best wishes for Smith. There were a lot of haters on Smith because of his age, and yet he's proven that if you have the right acting chops you can take on such a tough role.
I do miss Tennant, but am glad he left when he was still rated high as the Doctor. Leaves him in a good light, and this only confirms it.
@jadewarlock haters? Really. To be honest I dont know of any haters aside from that small group of online cowards who in themslefs r not true dihards of the show. I have seen so many Doctors come and go and they r all brill. A true fan [like u and me] will show nothing but surrport 4 the actor takeing on the role. @TimelordTVRevolution I wouldn't consider myself *quite* a diehard fan (that goes for "The Greatest American Hero", my first TV show), but I do really enjoy this show. I have a total respect for any and all actors - extra to lead - who do these shows, and the people who are BTS. It's why like you I get irritated with "David had his job stolen" comments. ;)

@methodicallyChaotic Watching this season, you can see that they had planned it for Tennant over Smith. That said, I started to feel during the specials that Tennant was going to become a caricature of the Doctor similar to T. Baker for some time in his run. PLUS, had Tennant done at least one more full season, the companion was going to be Donna (Tate said she would've done a second season, but if a full 13-ep season).
And "best" is a matter of opinion. Talent wise, Pertwee IMHO is the best.
@methodicallyChaotic I actually read comments from HER specifically stating that she wanted to return for another season, but when the powers that be decided to only do the specials, she decided to not continue.
And Tennant had been the Doctor for three seasons. He was starting to be caricatured into a - ironically - Casanova as it was. If he had not chosen to do Hamlet, I think we'd seen a second full season with him and Donna, not another companion.
@jadewarlock also Tennant is a good actor he shouldn't be confined to one role. He was brilliant as the Doctor but he fulfilled his dreams and now his moving onto the next chapter in his life.
i remember seeing his first publicity stills, and to me matt smith looked more like he belonged in a "scene" band
but i forgot about those stills by the time i watched his first few episodes, and i thought he was in his 30s or 40s because of the way he was speaking and how he looked
i was genuinely surprised to find out he was only 26 when he took the part
@jadewarlock Indeed, but as popular as Tennant was at time, he could afford to be gracious, as he moving on. But Matt proved to be a jaw-droppingly good actor and lucked out with amazing plot lines bring back the fun to the show. It really helped that Moffat's idea of a soap opera is that intelligent people grow up, move on, make good choices, and fight through impossible, even break rules for loved ones.
the first time i saw him (in pictures, before his first episode), i thought, oh he's weird-looking and i don't want Tennant to go and just... no. but then i saw his acting, of course :)
Matt Smith sucks so much as the doctor it's fucking stupid now they should have let the show die when they canceled it years back because david tennant sucked too the only good one was Christopher Eccleston and he must have left because he saw how stupid this new series is don't watch today's doctor who kids it's such garbage
@IChiseledIt how bloody wrong are you christopher was brillaint but you meerly dont like the show 'cause of the new docters who are infact brillant actors and great guys
@IChiseledIt Oh please, spare us the sob-fest. Christoper was a great actor, and so are David Tennant and Matt Smith. I was wary of the idea of Tennant leaving, but that was just my own emotional ties to the image of the Doctor. Have you not realized how FLAT the acting is in the original Doctor Who series? There is almost NO personality in most of the characters- I find them incredibly boring, however, I realize that without the original, the new would not even be around.
@TwistedResolve the cheap thrills and the flat acting was what made Dr. Who great. Most of the new series is overblown and overproduced - hope that the next series will go back to being less pretentious and showy and have more of the creep factor to it.
@TwistedResolve Really? I think Tom Baker, Colin Baker and Patrick Troughton were huge personalities. Pat really loved Wendy Padbury and Frazer Hines and it comes through in his acting. Colin is far more intense than the newbies, and Tom is...Tom. Tom is Mister Personality.
@TwistedResolve Flat? You've clearly never watched any of the Tom Baker(4th Doctor)/Elisabeth Sladen episodes. They were FULL of personality. As was Peter Davison (5th Doctor).
@TwistedResolve In case you haven't noticed, the original Doctor Who is very much like a Shakespearian play: the episodes are divided into acts and scenes, and it's all a bit rigid. But their acting, flat? Well, maybe the secondary characters, but the Doctors were excellent. All of them, from Hartnell to Smith. Well, McGann's movie was horrible, but the 8th Doctor himself was a likeable character. Just that the movie was American, so it was obviously guns, sex and no story.
I wouldn't call it flat. Back then it was a very different style of acting. It worked for the time, but most of this generation prefers the way they do it now.
@TwistedResolve sigh, im not starting an argument but basically i wholeheartedly disagree with your opinion. i too was very sad to see david leave but im sorry the acting in classic who was not flat and the older doctors did indeed have personality in spades. it isn't the case theydid some stuff the new series imporvoed on, hardly the new series does its own thing while respecting its past. im not a new series hater nor a old series hater, i do not even see them as 2 differ shows its just Dr Wjo

@jadewarlock also Tennant is a good actor he shouldn't be confined to one role. He was brilliant as the Doctor but he fulfilled his dreams and now his moving onto the next chapter in his life.

@jadewarlock thats so true
i remember seeing his first publicity stills, and to me matt smith looked more like he belonged in a "scene" band
but i forgot about those stills by the time i watched his first few episodes, and i thought he was in his 30s or 40s because of the way he was speaking and how he looked
i was genuinely surprised to find out he was only 26 when he took the part

@jadewarlock Indeed, but as popular as Tennant was at time, he could afford to be gracious, as he moving on. But Matt proved to be a jaw-droppingly good actor and lucked out with amazing plot lines bring back the fun to the show. It really helped that Moffat's idea of a soap opera is that intelligent people grow up, move on, make good choices, and fight through impossible, even break rules for loved ones.

@jadewarlock really? because of his age? i thought it was the chin.

@dotchoo The Chin, sorry. :D

@dotchoo Please bear in mind I'm American, so if I've made an error or confusing slang reference, please use the proper one for overseas. ;)
If it's the literal chin - it could be worse. He could have Jay Leno's chin.

@jadewarlock hahah oh my gosh i agree.
the first time i saw him (in pictures, before his first episode), i thought, oh he's weird-looking and i don't want Tennant to go and just... no. but then i saw his acting, of course :)

Matt Smith sucks so much as the doctor it's fucking stupid now they should have let the show die when they canceled it years back because david tennant sucked too the only good one was Christopher Eccleston and he must have left because he saw how stupid this new series is don't watch today's doctor who kids it's such garbage
IChiseledIt 1 year ago
@IChiseledIt how bloody wrong are you christopher was brillaint but you meerly dont like the show 'cause of the new docters who are infact brillant actors and great guys
7hird3ye 1 year ago

@TwistedResolve have you seen tom baker though? he DEFINITELY has personality
whateveryouthinkzzz 1 year ago
@TwistedResolve Really? I think Tom Baker, Colin Baker and Patrick Troughton were huge personalities. Pat really loved Wendy Padbury and Frazer Hines and it comes through in his acting. Colin is far more intense than the newbies, and Tom is...Tom. Tom is Mister Personality.

@TwistedResolve it was 1970 comedy
braxx02 6 months ago
@TwistedResolve Flat? You've clearly never watched any of the Tom Baker(4th Doctor)/Elisabeth Sladen episodes. They were FULL of personality. As was Peter Davison (5th Doctor).

@TwistedResolve Tom Baker and Elisabeth Sladen. No discussion.

@TwistedResolve

@KendrixTermina I believe he's stated he'll continue watching the show, seeing as how he's always been a huge Doctor Who nerd.
Eccleston seems to be the only one who was never really a fan, really.
