toiceborn, i AVE RECENTLY STARTED METAL DETECTING . I HAVE A BOUNTY HUNTER ALL I FIND IS SCREWS AND NAILS AT THE BEACH I FOUND A 2007 PENNY, ANY TIPS?
If you work the dry sand, the BH will be OK. However, if you work the wet sand, I don't the BH will be able to handle it... I started out with one and found some cool stuff. Keep digging :)
im gonna go try metal detecting tomorrow i dont realy care what i find ive never found a coin only new ones but i hope i find one and hunting a cow field and i hope i get some old cow and maybe farmer buckles or somats i dont mind anything will do.
i use a dfx not for beginer i wanted to wrap that thig around a tree on several occassions.but now after three years wouldnt trde it for nothing else. great hunt and great finds. good luck in your hunting all!coin shooter for life.
I live in Ca so i plan on using the Whites GMT for gold hunting. At 950 oz. i wont waste time digging up trash. You guys sound like your from back east w/those accents.
Always wanted to do some gold hunting. The only "gold hunting" here is at the beach. Still, you have to dig aluminum trash / nickels if you want to find gold.
Hi R2! I've seen many of your finds on the Minelab owners site. I envy all of you across the pond; having all that history there. Here, a 200 year old coin is big news LOL. My personal best, and about as old as you can get around here, was a Wm & Mary Colonial 1/2 cent circa 1690.
As far as the Exp II is concerned, I wouldn't use any other.
i want to start metal detecting...what kind of metal detector would you suggest for a beginner...im 14 years old and as you could probably guess my price range is low...so please advise me...it'd be great
For a beginner, I'd recommend a Garrett Ace 250. You can probably find a used one relatively cheap on Ebay. Go with a name brand like Whites, Fisher, Garrett, Tesoro or Minelab. Research the models by going to metal detecting forums and asking people who actually use them. Don't rely on written "reviews". Don't buy the first one you see that looks good. Good Luck!
what kind of detector do you use?? Also starting with out your buddie by an hour early? Doesnt seem fair to get a head start on him. Are you still friends?? What is better sand or dirt detecting
I use an Minelab Explorer II. Yes, yes... I started an hour early. I admit it :) Problem is, I'm a real early bird. I'm up before the crack of dawn every morning. Are we still friends? We met through one of my other videos... I shared a spot and he shared a couple... think I'll email him to say hello :)
Oh ok. Also, I am a teenager looking for some info on metal detecting. Treasure hunting has always been one of my dreams to do, but my parents wouldn't let me buy a detector. I am getting one in a week and plan to go on my cousin's "farm" to search around. The farm itself has been around for a long time, and the former owners buried any scrap metal they got, so it will be interesting. Do you have any websites that can give me info about metal detecting? Like how to not damage the items I find.
Or how to find out how much the item is worth or to keep it or not to keep it. Because me cousin informed me that there are old parts of tractors and other macherney.
How do you know there's nothing "old"? Research. Go to library, look on line. What's the history of your area? When was it settled? Are there any parks near you? What was the park before it became a park? Old homesteads? Maybe an old Fairground? Street names can be a clue as to what used to be there before houses went up. Try to find old pictures. Talk to some "old timers". Maybe they played someplace as a kid, went to an old swimming hole... etc.
Im not sure if anyone has said this already but please stop rubbing the dirt against the coin! it causes deep scratches and hurts the value of the coin.
Yep, I'm well aware of that :) I only do that on coins that are well worn or basically toast (like the LC). copper coins don't fair well in soil so I'm not exactly ruining them by giving them a little rub :)
Ok great :) it hurts me to see it happen to nice coins. I just recently got back into detecting and Ive noticed alot of detectors don't know alot about coins but only have a basic knowledge.
I've learned quite a bit from other forums and research over the years. There are also a lot of great coin sites around that give a ton of info on history, etc. Pretty interesting. My oldest is a very worn Wm&Mary half cent circa 1690-1694 that I picked up in the woods. I'm still looking for the the holy grail in a gold coin though :) (that one I will NOT rub in the least LOL )
A coin of 1843 looks very nice! I walk along with metal detector for about 1 year and by the moment I have collected some 70 coins of Russia and Germany. What is the oldest coin you found?
my oldest coin was found a couple of weeks ago. It's a William and Mary British colonial copper. Not in the greatest shape (no date) but they were only made between 1690 and 1694.
nice finds. i also have found a large cent or two. i was wondering if you or any one would rell me how to properly clean it as not to destroy its value. thanks for any info. it will be greatly appreaciated.
The rule of thumb is, if you even THINK something is valuable don't clean it. It should be done professionally. When it comes out of the ground don't rub the dirt off... If a coin looks to be in really good condition, just wrap it in some paper towels or something like that. Some guys use old prescription containers with a little water in them. Copper coins around here don't fair too well. I've cleaned the few I've found a couple of different ways and cleaned the detail right off :)
thanks for the info. ive also made that mistake and thats why i was asking i have used olive oil and that works ok. i have also seen on ebay coin cleaning kits and im not sure if that would be worth investing in. the cleaning product was called e-z-est and it was made for copper. have you ever used it or heard of it?
Does anyone know if its illegal to scout around gravesites with the detector and digging? there´s an old cemetary up in the woods where I live, never had the guts to check it out tho :p
It's not the legality that's in question, it's how ethical it is... I'd say you could MD the perimeter provided it's not private property but I would draw the line at digging over graves. It just doesn't look right. Personally, I wouldn't want someone digging around my loved one's grave. If you have to ask the question, you probably already know the answer :)
I think that depends on where you are. I'm on Long Island and can hunt in the state parks here as long as I have a permit. On the beach (State parks) you also need a permit but I've never been asked to show one. However, when digging dirt in State parks, I've been asked to show a permit often.
what state is that in??
