Okay, so I confess: That was me (Annette) nearly a quarter century ago. Yikes. It was probably way more fun to do than to watch. Would you believe I now have a PhD in history, write YA time travel novels, and perform for kids in time-travel programs? If you're interested, visit AnnetteLaing (dot) com. Oh, and I live in Georgia these days--I miss Sacramento, even if it doesn't miss me!
@44cupcake ANNETTE! Hello hello! How are you this evening? *evil grin*
You might be unique amongst all of us who moved away from Sacramento and actually *MISS* it!
Should probably tell you that your accent, even more than that of British TV, affected a certain category of Sacramentans in the late 80s. I can verify this because I've actually picked up girls because I identified their accents as "from watching Dr Who during pledge breaks on KVIE 6". How delightfully geeky is THAT? (cont)
@44cupcake In England, my accent, I'm told, is now a "less annoying American accent". IE, less twangy. I believe I have you to thank for that.
And when I worked in South Wales (Cwmbran, I'm afraid), I worked alongside a few old gentlemen who had clear memories of the very first episode while it was broadcast nearly 48 year ago. Many adventures for us both since last we met, I see!
@44cupcake Not at the moment! Quite a long story involving a boy and a girl, a number of exhausting commutes on the London Overground and then National Rail under the Bristol channel, and rather a lot of kittens. I'll be back in Bristol, where most of my friends are, in the next few years, rely on it!
Wow, this was when the pledge breaks were fun...not to mention LIVE... And oh, how I loved Doctor Who on Saturday nights. The theme song scared the crap out of my older sister all the time, haha.
This is painful to watch in places...American Who fans in the 80's still haunt my dreams to this day...But the thing that makes me laugh is the $350 pledge...You get the Dr In Distress RPM...THEY'D HAVE TO PAY ME TO LISTEN TO THAT!!!
It *was* bad, but I've heard it used to great effect in a house mix (esp with Rah Band's The Crunch). What's great about showing my British friends this video, though, is when they say "WTF am I watching?!?"
They had Old Doctor Who in 2002 and that was the last time I saw PBS do that and that was before the reformatting of most PBS channels. I never gotten the whole final episode of WAR GAMES due to a building power short in my apartment. My tape still is half blank from where it cut off and was praying for the series to start over, nevermind.
The sad part of this footage here with Mr Troughton is that this was about a week or two before he passed away.
Thank you for the chuckle. I watched Doctor Who on KVIE back then, too, and remember the endless pledge breaks well. What a way to spend a Saturday night in the 1980s...

Back in those days liking Dr. Who meant too much of seeing people like this.

Awesome! My brother and I used to stay up and watch Monty pythons flying circus and Doctor who on KVIE. This brings back so many memories.

It's too bad that great old shows like classic Doctor Who and The Prisoner are so hard to find on broadcast TV these days....

Our PBS has the New Who on at 11:pm at night. Doesn't make any sense to me. Plus they don't play the old who.
