@keltronzero That's the Russian national anthem. I wouldn't want you to feel like a philistine, but that's the equivalent of me hearing the AMERICAN national anthem and asking "what's with the cold war era music?"
The answer: Steve Cotter is a master of Russian kettlebells. He's paying homage to the home country of his sport; a country that started about 50 years before America instigated the cold war to protect its dominance in foreign affairs.
@AmusingYeti True. But kettlebell sport is a distinctly Russian method of training with its own quirks (such as weight classes and specific movements, like the snatch). The kettlebell also has a distinct Russian history as a tool for weighing market goods. People started training with them similarly to how Roman Catholic athletes trained with churchbell clappers (the original dumbbells). And the Scottish used rocks with handles for the same reason: they were easily available and heavy.
never forget that american aggression came in response to the disgustingly callous way in which the japanese-russo war was handled and the carving up of many nations after ww2. We mishandled colonialims and we didnt want a competitor.
I'm a big fan of Steve and the Russian National Anthem sounds cool, do you really think (had he remained unopposed) Stalin would have stopped in East Berlin?
@kobkob4 Stalin unopposed might have engulfed all of Europe. The Soviets used their good cop routine earlier in colonization, while they were building the people's trust. Later, they became authoritarian.
If US leaders hadn't been so hawkish and ethically irresponsible, we might all be speaking Russian today.
Motherfucker broke one wrist when he was a kid, so he couldn't do regular push-ups like the rest of his buddies at the martial arts school he was training at. So he started doing one-leg squats. He got to the point where he could do the pistols at the same rate that others were doing push-ups. He can do the pistol with two 32 kgs (2 x 70 pnds) kettlebells. He's a mutant.

He has great technique, no doubt in 20 years time he wont be as he is in the sense of total freakness but every bit about the guy is strong. As long as he sticks to good technique which he has you have less chance for injury.
He's is also one of the 7 people in the world who can pass the "beast" challange ... which is a pullup, a one arm military press, and a one legged squat with the beast (a 48kg (106 lb) kettlebell.)
A kettle bell with a wide handle will help train grip strength better but believe me a standard size handle on kettle bell is all you need when it comes to grip and wrist strength with the exercises you will be performing.
To elaborate a little further, the above is true, and the Pro-Grade model out of AKC is best for swings, long cycle, and snatches in regard to balance and properly applying the 'hook grip'. In most circles in America a 'wide handle' is considered to be normal.
I wouldn't advise a doctor but a physio as doctors will genreally just put you on pain killers without getting to the root of the problem and rectifying it.
I had a herniated disc between l4 and l5 and partially deteriorated l4 and l5 also which caused constant aching and discomfort. Since training core and power with kettlebells with good form my core is now very strong and my back pain has gone completly.
it looks like kettlebell exercise is bad for your back... is it? scientific research? I have some herniated discs and want to try kettlebells but i'm afraid a doctor would say NO WAY DONT DO IT ITS BAD FOR YOUR BACK :|
Kettlebell training is actually great for your back, and I've fixed many clients' back problems with kettlebell exercises. Regarding your specific situation you would want to get your Doctor's opinion, but I would look for a Doctor who also knows about fitness. Most people assume doctors know about physical fitness, but most are clueless.

His knees will be fine in years to come: Read the following books and you will realise why:
All by Pavel Tsatsouline
Power to the people
Enter the kettlebell
Super joints
All of the principles in these books he follows so he will probably still be doing pistols

Why would he need to squat 700? The guy is a wushu kung fu athlete and kettlebell instructor, not a power lifter.
