Mariah Carey nor Chaka Khan are altos in any form; they are sopranos with a broad range. There IS a such thing as singers who can COMFORTABLY sing in more than one voice.
I don't think Mariah Carey is a soprano, I am pretty sure she stands between coloratura contralto and a light lyric mezzo-soprano... It's really hard to tell because her voice has changed so much over time ... but it's still very, very beautiful! If you listen to her work now, it sounds a lot like her very early work!
3:47 I wasn't watching the video but I heard that she would of actually progressed to that B1... The vocals and the bass somehow blended there for a sec :D Dropped mah' coffee mug
Excuse me ! English-speaking world's Alto voices. You want to hear some of those Russian opera Altos....wipe the floor with these microphonically-enhanced overraters!
Hmm... Mariah Carey has the largest voice register (range), probably in history (from D3 up to C6 octaves). However, I can never listen to her songs because she can't hold a darn note still, always filling up the pieces with much too many ornaments and stuff I can't figure what the melody is, it makes me dizzy. It is sad 'cause it spoils everything.
@jnyveslbl Um... D3 to C6? It's Eb2- G#7, a bit over five octaves, which is definitely superlarge but also definitely not the largest in history. Yeah, she can go crazy with melisma at times haha but it's not that way with her aaall the time :P
@0AspiringStar0 I meant, as a singer, the lowest note she can hit (D3), which is Female Contralto.
I don't know what you mean by "Eb2- G#7", as per vocal range women (vocal folds) can not go below C3. That means the C3 octave, the C4 and C5 octaves, and with falsetto some notes in the C6 octave. So that is 3 entire octaves (C3, C4, C5).
@jnyveslbl Generally the ability to hit a D3 is indicative of a contralto voice type, yes. Mariah has the ability to hit notes as low as 2nd octave notes and notes in the seventh octave, and so can a great deal of others. Beyonce knowles for instance, has hit notes as low as Bb2 live and G#2 in studio, and Alicia keys hits second octave notes as well, just to name a couple.
@0AspiringStar0 Yea, I think I know where the confusion comes from:
On a standard piano keyboard (88 notes), the first one (Note #01, first tone) is A0. The middle C (Note #40) is C4. The concert pitch (Note #49) is A4 (Frequency 440).
Actually, a lot of these singers are Mezzo Soprano's :) Beautiful, rich Mezzo's... Perhaps only Cher, Anita, and toni braxton are true CONTRALTOs in this, because they have that dark color to their timbre. Remember the Contralto is VERY rare, and just because a female singer can sing low does not really mean they are contralto's. Most females can basically sing the same notes, but its where there ease and power is and timbre that mostly determine vocal type :)
@JUSTINMILL3R that's true but the dictionary definition of a Contralto is that they can sing the F below Middle C to 2 Fs above Middle C- and they are rare just like you said

@bmwboi88 Coloratura soprano is the highest female voice. Spinto is short for lirico spinto, or pushed lyric, describing a lyric soprano who can push the voice to dramatic climaxes(there i also tenor lirico spinto). It's more to do with vocal timber, weight, size and tessitura than vocal range anyway.
@horn0viola Interesting. My vocal instructor has referred to Mariah as a spinto in casual conversation. He's been in music for years and has two PHD's (if that's even possible) but I respect your knowledge. I'd love to see what he has to say about that that. Thanks!
I would consider Mariah a soprano based on the fact that her most resonant and best quality notes are in the high register. There's no doubt that she's a fantastic singer, but I still wouldn't put her in an alto category :/
Chaka Khan is just untouchable, Tina Turner there will never be another, Gladys Knight just classic and so soulful, Anita Baker a class of her own, Mariah truly blessed and gifted, there are some that have been left out accidently, and a few that shoulda been left out purposely.
@cooolness3 I'm pretty sure this isn't going to change your mind but you should check out their performance of "Baby Baby Baby" and "What About Your Friends" from the Apollo. She was really good there or any performance from their debut album. =)
I have always loved most of these Singers..... Always loved these type of voices since I was Little... Never really knew the music terminology until people started listening to my music and said that I was a Contralto...?? LOL.... Beautiful Music here...
@ernest671 Her type of voice is the combination of alto, mezzo-soprano and soprano. The best voice ever. Her high notes are powerful and wonderful. Not like Xtina and Celine Dion-singing high notes with the raised laryxn and sounds raspy.
@ernest671 Yes Annie Lennox! I'm a male baritone and I sing "Hear Comes The Rain" often at karaoke. It's creepy but I sound just like her tone-wise when I sing it. Also, don't forget Christine McVie from Fleetwood Mac.
@blktrekie29 Come on now....Mariah carey does not have a 5-octave range. If your saying she has a 5 octave range and can hit notes in the 7th octave then she can hit notes in the first octave? Not quite. Nor can she hit all the notes between the second octave and the sixth octave. Ive seen this statement so many times and its completely false. Not to mention her 7th octave notes are whistle which isnt part of your range.
@Ominex77 Her vocal range is from G#2 to G#7. She has been singing and proforming so long that you can find live videos of her on her hitting tons of notes, including her highest note. You obviously don't understand how measuring vocal range works. If whistle range Whistle notes start at E6, generally. If they were not part of your range (whether you're a woman or man), then the majority of people would have the same range, but they don't. They are diff. parts to the voice.
@blktrekie29 No, your mistaken. It's you who has no idea how to measure notes correctly. Your vocal range accounts for every pitch in which you can make a clear tone. And could you maybe give me some URLS to these videos perhaps? And whistle range differs from male to female where a whistle range for a female may be anywhere from the high c to d7 whereas a males whistle register wouldnt normally be in the 7th octave. There are diff parts of the voice however they arent part of your range.
@blktrekie29 And honestly, what you said was complete and utter nonsense. Whistle register is not part of your vocal range because its completely disconnected from all other parts of your voice. Everyone has 3 parts to their voice: chest, head, and falsetto. to consider whistle a part of the voice is nonsense. "You obviously dont understand how measuring vocal range works." This coming from the guy who cannot type correctly? But, you're a music maestro right?
@Ominex77 The whistle register is part of the head voice. Women don't have falsetto--only men do. It has to do with diff. in physiological make up between men and women. Men and women don't hit certain notes in the same way. The three parts of the voice are as follows: chest, mixed (combo of chest and head -- high, powerful belts are here), and head. I'm not a music maestro, but I do read.
@blktrekie29 Physiologically, there is no difference between the female head voice and the male falsetto. This is a distinction that originated three hundred years ago, before we had cameras to watch the vocal apparatus of singers. Both involve relaxation of the thyroarytenoid muscle. Whether the sound produced this way is different enough in men and women to justify a different name is an aesthetic judgment, and I'm on your side on that question.
Nice vid but some singer here are not alto, if someone can reach some low notes that doesnt means that that person is alto, tessitura of some songers isnt in alto range and its easy to notice. I can reach D2 even C2 and I m not bass I m wagnerian baritone.
T Boz sounds off key, NO. I love Gladys, She's a great singer and performer. YES.Cher is novelty, she is not a singer but a personality.NO Tina was great but she's just too old to hit it anymore. She's a great grandmother that still wears short skirts time for her to hang it up.NO.Brandy, is not bad. OK.Mariah is too full of herself these days, She's lost credibility, she does better when she sings about not being in love. NO. Chaka is legendary, YES. Sade. Cool. YES,Anita- YES! Toni YES.
@TenderSexyAngel i don't even know what the hell is mariah doinjg there, she can cover the contralto range, but her natural, most comfortable area is soprano, and not only she but many scientists and stuff agree
@xXxFF4everxXx yeah. I agree. But I think mariah can sing in any range though.cuz there's some song's where her voice is deep as hell. then tere's some songs when her voice is high.
@TenderSexyAngel yes of course, she has 5.4 octaves range, she can sing as either soprano, mezzo or contralto, maybe even as low as baritone or bass D:
@xXxFF4everxXx no shes a alto dummy no soprano she can sing soprano but she confirm shes a alto thats whats she more comfortable in just because she sings in soprano all the time doesnt make her a soprano
@Thkmra her tone is kinda gross to me. Sounds man-ish. Sorry. My opinion. Same with Toni braxton but I like hers a little more cuz hers is more soulful.
Come on! Is Cher THE ONLY white top alto singer in the world?By looking at this video, one would think only women of color can sing pop songs in the alto range, and I don't think that's accurate! BTW, I think Sade is BY FAR, LIGHT YEARS AWAY FROM THE OTHERS the most sexy and feminine of the bunch, her song "Kiss of Life" epitomizes femininity in the video shown!
I think vocal ranges are so hard to define because every S.A.T.B. isn't the same and doesn't sound the same. Some people have more than one or two octave ranges. Yeah okay, Mariah Carey is naturally an Alto, but the fact that she used to be able to sing full Soprano and higher with her extended range of whistle is amazing.. That's just my opinion.
@Calihollywood21 I don't know where you got your information from, but Mariah has been a contralto her entire career, mainly becuase her abilities her natural tessituta is so low and deep. Both Mariah and her mother conformed it. Mariah has a special timbre in her vocal chords that gives her a special kind of classification called Spinto Contralto, which means that she has the ability to change from lyric to dramatic and back to lyric again with little effort.
@superx57 I agree with you about Mariah's range and people's ranges in general. I'm a natural baritone (which is easiest for me to sing in), but my range goes above that of an alto and towards the middle range of a bass singer. Just because people think I sing best as a tenor, doesn't mean that I am a tenor. Yes, Mariah's got a 5, 6, or even 7 octave voice, but her bread and butter is her lower range.
@najellin Hey, that means your vocal range is similar to mine! I'm also a natural baritone with a range extending from that of a counter-tenor (alto is exclusively for women) to that of a bass. The only thing is, I'm not sure if I would be classified as a lyric baritone or a dramatic baritone. I guess I would have to ask a music teacher or something.
ok most of these girls are not contraltos, I know this because its an opera term and I know alot about opera and majority of these girls are mezzo sopranos aka alto 1s if youve been in choir. basically there were only 2 contraltos and those were Toni braxton and Anita Baker. Contraltos basically literally sound like men and they are extremely rare!

Their voices are so dark and deep.
But there were singers missing in your video like Annie Lennox and Lisa Gerard.
Sade is my favorite. Mariah Carey is amazing but there are popular singers who can go lower than her like Madonna

Toni YES.

Mariah Carey can sing higher than that!!!!!!!
TenderSexyAngel 1 year ago
@TenderSexyAngel i don't even know what the hell is mariah doinjg there, she can cover the contralto range, but her natural, most comfortable area is soprano, and not only she but many scientists and stuff agree
xXxFF4everxXx 1 year ago
@xXxFF4everxXx yeah. I agree. But I think mariah can sing in any range though.cuz there's some song's where her voice is deep as hell. then tere's some songs when her voice is high.
TenderSexyAngel 1 year ago
@TenderSexyAngel yes of course, she has 5.4 octaves range, she can sing as either soprano, mezzo or contralto, maybe even as low as baritone or bass D:

@Thkmra She sounds like a man. Whatever.
dimestarr91 1 year ago
@Thkmra her tone is kinda gross to me. Sounds man-ish. Sorry. My opinion. Same with Toni braxton but I like hers a little more cuz hers is more soulful.

@50starfish She is a mezzo-soprano, that is why she is not on the list.
misterbee66 1 year ago
@50starfish beyonce is not an alto.
dimestarr91 1 year ago
MsBibilinda 1 year ago
@MsBibilinda Cher is technically a Tenor. lol

T-boz is the boss!
;D

Though there are some good picks like Toni, Anita, Mariah, and Gladys, the rest are no where near the best. I mean T-Boz? When does she ever sing?

Vampirictattoo 1 year ago
actually mariah carey was a dynamic soprano in her youth days. she became alto for the last 10 years.
Calihollywood21 1 year ago 4
@Calihollywood21 I don't know where you got your information from, but Mariah has been a contralto her entire career, mainly becuase her abilities her natural tessituta is so low and deep. Both Mariah and her mother conformed it. Mariah has a special timbre in her vocal chords that gives her a special kind of classification called Spinto Contralto, which means that she has the ability to change from lyric to dramatic and back to lyric again with little effort.
superx57 1 year ago 17
@superx57 I agree with you about Mariah's range and people's ranges in general. I'm a natural baritone (which is easiest for me to sing in), but my range goes above that of an alto and towards the middle range of a bass singer. Just because people think I sing best as a tenor, doesn't mean that I am a tenor. Yes, Mariah's got a 5, 6, or even 7 octave voice, but her bread and butter is her lower range.
najellin 1 year ago
@najellin Hey, that means your vocal range is similar to mine! I'm also a natural baritone with a range extending from that of a counter-tenor (alto is exclusively for women) to that of a bass. The only thing is, I'm not sure if I would be classified as a lyric baritone or a dramatic baritone. I guess I would have to ask a music teacher or something.
superx57 1 year ago
@superx57 Mariah also said she was an alto. But she has a wide enough range to cover that of a soprano as well.
imafan123456 7 months ago
@superx57 Yes Mariah and Chaka Khan are contralto's that can sing high notes. I love them. I also love Glady's, she is great too.
aprigirl 6 months ago
I love T-Boz's voice!
anjelheaven 1 year ago 2
Mariah, Toni, and Anita are my favorites! You should add Alexandra Burke to this list. She's probably the best contralto Europe has ever produced!

ok most of these girls are not contraltos, I know this because its an opera term and I know alot about opera and majority of these girls are mezzo sopranos aka alto 1s if youve been in choir. basically there were only 2 contraltos and those were Toni braxton and Anita Baker. Contraltos basically literally sound like men and they are extremely rare!
