Also of note. If you compare Barnards vegan diet to low-carb...
A recent japanese study of severely diabetic patients showed a MASSIVE reduction in HbA1c from 10.5 to 7.4 !! This is huge, and vastly superior results to what Barnard's vegan diet showed.
He never tested his diet against a low-carb control, because he knows he'd lose.
Read Dr. Richard K. Bernstein, MD - both a medical doctor AND a diabetic to get some great information on low-carb and treating diabetes properly.
you don't need to go vegan to reverse diabetic symptoms...just cut out refined carbs and sugar....have some meat...have some dairy....enjoy your life...don't eat soy crap either. Vegans have an agenda because they bleed for furry little critters....but to tie diabetes to oil and meat products is just lamo and not scientific of course. Any diabetic knows this..it's the high glycemic carbs that are the enemy...not oliive oil and filet mignon. This guy's training is in psychiatry...and it shows.
god never show affectionate and forgiveness,he always show a perfect judge.i am having a lot of questions about god,is god a true human or true judge?
It's the cutting down on white flour and sugar that makes this program successful, it has nothing to do with the actual Vegan diet...you could just as well reverse diabetes by eating a high fat diet as long as you keep the glycemic index low, and no you won't get heart disease either. Heart disease is an inflammatory chronic disorder, not a fat metabolism disorder.
I am a Type II diabetic, and I have always been a skeptic, but I have been following Dr. Barnard's suggestions about eating vegan since last October....and my A1c dropped from 14 to 6.2. I'm in, kids. No one can convince me that veganism has had nothing to do with such a profound drop in these numbers.
Another reason to avoid the Vegan Diet is EFA deficiency, primarily DHA/EPA. Plant based Omega3 efa, known as Alpha Linolenic acid has to be converted for your body to use as DHA/EPA, this conversion rate in humans is very low, usually at a rate of 1-4%. Jesus, the saviour of the world ate fish, it should be ok for everyone else.
I've been on this diet less than a week and it's already working. I stopped one of my meds 3 days into the new diet and it looks like i'll be going off my last med. Woke up this morning with a great reading without taking medicine. Pick up his book, it's REALLY WORTH IT!! I've also lost a few pounds too and I feel great!!!!! Thanks Dr. Barnard!!!!
I saw this show on Saturday and instantly fell in love with him. He speaks clearly, makes lots of sense and explains things my doctors have touched on but never explained well. I think he is fantastic and I wish he had a facebook or myspace page so I could follow him!
Dr. Barnard is shamelessly hiding an animal rights ideological agenda behind this new vegan-only diet book.
You will never see him publicly acknowledge that he was the president of the radical fringe group called People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) as recently as 2003. His current organization, PCRM, is primarily funded by PETA.
Dr. Barnard is not an endocrinologist, dietary physician, nor even an intern. He is a trained psychiatrist.
@pam0077 "You will never see him publicly acknowledge that he was the president of the radical fringe group called People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) as recently as 2003." He wouldn't acknowledge this because it's simply not true. If I'm not mistaken, Ingrid Newkirk has been president of PETA since she co-founded it in 1980.
@lekichnhuong Yes, it's a shame... Most people want easy answers, easy solutions. They want optimal health but they don't want to do the planning that is necessary to achieve it.
A vegan diet has been proven by Ornish to reverse heart disease. And now we see through Dr Barnard's work that it reverses diabetes. Both my wife and I have seen our blood sugar and cholesterol and weight normalize by eating vegan.
I hope that the public increasingly understands that those who try to downplay the significance of this research and the success these doctors are having, are almost always connected in some way to the beef and dairy industry and basically pretending it's safe
@peaceandlove4949: But of course, all these "TV doctors" are selling books...and other items are their web site. I might suggest that everyone IGNORE THESE FAD DOCTORS and talk to a RD (Registered DIETICIAN; not just a nutritionist; dieticians are certified.) There are ones at every hospital. Remember how popular the doctors who hyped the Atkins and South Beach diets were? Now it turns out they were quite wrong. Don't folow fads or product-selling doctors. Read up on your own.
I applaud Dr. Neal Barnard for sharing his knowledge on TV and I hope a lot of people with diabetes will benefit from it. We need physicians like him, Dr. McDougall, Dr. Ornish, and Dr. Esselstyn to heal ourselves and our planet! I wish this would be broadcast nationally. As hard as it is for adults to change their eating habits - children are ambassadors for change and deserve a brighter (and healthier) future!
Your a dumbass. Taking out an entire food group is very dangerous and changing to a new diet is very hard too, first off it's not even easy to diet. And wow aren't you hilarious with planet vegas.
@fsufan475 Going vegan has nothing to do with avoiding food groups. Vegans still eat from the "Meat and Alternatives" group, we just only eat the "Alternatives", and same goes for the "Dairy and Alternatives" group. :)
The first group is concerned with protein, which we get from beans, lentils, soy foods, etc. The second group is concerned with calcium, which we get from beans, leafy green veggies, fortified products, etc.
The key to diabetes is PORTION CONTROL. Not this vegan nonsense. You can eat everything!!! Want ice cream? Have a small dish and skip some carbo. just don't eat a whole pint. Make sense? Sure it does.
