Along with Del and Roy, Gene was one of the 3 great male solo artists of the 60's. Interesting that all 3 continued to have hits in the UK in the years following the British Invasion while not being as successful here. All died way too young.
@w:Gene (live) was an imperfect singer, as far back as '64. It seemed to me he'd risk going off or cracking his voice rather than miss a chance to nail something incredible, (which he also often did!). In the case of 'Rebel', it's more than that, & more than age: It's a song he didn't write for himself, that isn't suited for him, with a lame band, & being compared to a 'force of nature' recording by Darlene Love that no one can ever equal.
@lazur1 it was that eccentricity in his lyrics and singing that made him so special. He wasnt afraid to speak his mind wether it was belting out a great note or making a rythm with some of his unique vocals. It sounds like he puts so much emphasis and feeling into every line he delivers. Im Glad too share the same birthday with this man 17th of Feb. Its the dawning of the age of Aquarius!
Amazing..... I love all the old time music... I wish I could have been alive in the day and seen them all play for real... Music is not music today... Bring back the 50's and 60's please......
@dylandollyspud I love both versions but I'll always be partial to the original in that SHE'S a rebel! Simply love that! Makes it stand out more that way... but, you're right about Spector and the Crystals were, of course, fantastic!
@pompeydaz1973 Thanks for the information. After i googled his name I saw more recent pictures of him and it finally dawned on me where I'd seen him before. He's usually on The Biography channel whenever they do biographies on people in the entertainment business.
Wow--this guy has written so much music behind so many talents! I think the scuttlebut is right...not sure if he ever did have a #1. But that does not matter, nor does it detract from a monumental talent!
Maybe not the best performance I've heard Gene perform; BUT it is HIS tune, and the Crystals took it to #1 in 1962 !
For those not so familiar with this guy's work, may I suggest an hour or fraction thereof sampling this man's recordings here on YouTube.
Have you check out a great young singer - his name - Jal Joshua - check it out on your tube. One Voice, Hallelujia, Don't Cry Out Loud...... They are all great, check it out.
Gene never had a song that went to #1hit he sang..He had only himself to blame. He had one go to #2 . Which one beat him out? It was the one he was singing , He's a Rebel. He also wrote Hello Mary Lou for Ricky Nelson among others.
Gene Pitney made it look so easy, and this is a very difficult song to sing. Lots of words and phrases without taking a breath is challenging, but Pitney made it work. Still a good song to this day.
Hello " Ze18613 ", Do you know what "a SIZE" [format] wants to say ? Make a small effort and thinks of the others ! THANK YOU. __________ Sais-tu ce que "un FORMAT" veut dire ? Fais un petit effort et pense aux autres ! MERCI. ______ Friendly greetings. Salutations amicales. Bye bye.
@Ze18613 He's trying to ask you, "Do you know what a format MEANS. Make a small effort and think of others." I figured it out from his French which is much better than his English. Other than that, I don't know what he's talking about, either.
El Paso is the song I will remember him most by ...it it is most interesting that green day took She's a rebel and turned it into something quite different - now - what if Iggy Pop redid this- everything old can be new again. And - why not.
Thanks for this video- Gene Pitney's music will last forever! He had such great songs to go with his great voice. Gene is now singing with the Heavenly Choir! Gene, RIP! Ron
Star quality shines through. What a great voice and delivery. The song brings back so many happy memories. Gene's music lives on. Thanks for posting this.
What an artist!! He had such a baby face, and the prematurely silver hair just emphasized that. But his singing, emoting and delivery were always wonderous.
Although I love Elvis first, Gene Pitney is second. He has just had soooo many songs that I like and can passionately sing along with. Especially songs of love. I sing karaoke, (Queen of Karaoke) and his songs just reach my heart. Saw him in Vegas and he was sensational.
No, he is not god. He is a human who has done the best with his potential and for a man, he is the greatest. It would not be hard for a god to be a great singer but for a man, it is fabulous.
He almost sounds like an Englishman himself here! Is it because he came from Conn.? My Mom came from Waterbury and she had an accent, too. What a great guy...I didn't know he ever worked with Spector et al.
Thanks for this, I love this song. I saw Gene many times when he came to the UK. I've been a fan for many years. Sadly missed, his music will live on.
A few years ago I went to see Gene Pitney he sang this song, he said he wrote this one for The Crystals, I love this tune, and I love all of Gene Pitneys songs, he was a great man, may he rest in peace, I miss him.

I knew he wrote it, but his version is nowhere as near as good as the Crystals version. Just shows what magic Spector did all those years ago

Hello "Ze18613",
This video has a narrow and high image. Gene Pitney sees itself "stretched". Image crushed to the left and to the right.
A Size or 'Format' it is: 3:4 or 16:9 ( HD). Sorry, but I am a Legionary, not enough time for YouTube.
But Gene Pitney is a formidable singer !
Greetings and saddened for this delay -
