It's good to see a lesbian in a great series such as Storm Hawks. A good show deserves good diversity, and seeing that this fictional world isn't filled with just straights actually makes it that much more realistic.

As has been pointed out before, I will point out again. Gay characters and/or subtext CAN be in children's shows. For Storm Hawks itself, see the Murk Raiders and Argryn (sp?)
But other childrens shows have had gay elements that were far more blatant.
Characters: In Disney's Lilo and Stitch the series Pleakley and Jumba are freaking MARRIED, the cartoon Brace Face had a gay character who befriended Sharon.
Subtext: In Beast Wars Rattrap kissed Rhinox TWICE, once on the mouth!
I'd also like to add that Velma from Scooby-Doo was also an open lesbian in a lot of the original shows.
In any case, I think what the show is saying is that Piper has a girl-crush on Starling because Starling is her favorite Sky Knight. I think she was just trying to act cool to impress her idol. :P
Besides, Repton would have his sights set on Aerrow if he tried anything with Starling. She may not like him, but Repton's behaviour in Absolute Power (wanted to make her into stew, but then said he'd spare her) indicates that he might harbour impure thoughts about her.

You all are wrong...Piper and the word gay are not right. This is a KID's show. Even if the producers were trying to imply she was lesbo, they wouldn't make it as obvious as that. If you want to see Piper flirt, watch the Forbidden City episode, and she wasn't exactly cheap with her affections in ep. 4, either. I think she just admires Starling and wants to impress.
People, Piper isn't gay. Its a kids show, CN wouldn't allow it (even if that is homophobic). Have you ever seen a gay character in a kids tv show? No.
Oh yeah, that was 25, not 26. And I just remembered, the Murk Raiders in 24 actually did some pretty stereotypical posturing, with the captain's limpwrist gesticulation and the fact that he got asked to dance by Finn and accepted.
To be fair, she could very well be bi. There's similar incidents with male characters she encounters (usually in the form of gushing over them), but I've noticed a tendency for the animators to have her interact more strongly around female characters (and vice-versa). And there's no doubt Chiara Zanni adds some exasperated stuttering when there's an episode with Starling. Basically, there's enough going on in some episodes to make my gaydar go off. What's nice is it doesn't attract attention.
When I say "strongly", I don't mean in a regular friendly manner, more like a playful manner. Like when she tells Finn that Dove's riding with her. She's doing Dove a favor, but Zanni's emphasis on words and the animators making Piper gesticulate heavily, gives the scene some undertones which would be more obvious if the character was male. It's little things like that.
I know. I love Storm Hawks and all, but they aren't always subtle about things (especially in terms of comedy), but romance in general in this series has been pretty lowkey and subtle. How many people realize Aerrow has a picture of Dove in his room, for instance? I'd like it to stay that way for as long as possible.
Okay, um, you know, comparing the general sexual orientation of Piper, Aerrow, etc, it would kinda figure to me that, (unlike pokemon which sucks ass now,) that hopefully, eventually, there'd be a little romance early in the story. What I hope of is Aerrow+Piper & god forbid but I dare say, Finn+Cyclonis. Of course, He'd have to get a bit of intelligence when it comes to women as well as a kickass charm & some balls. Seriously.
The evidence so far speaks against it. Looking at some of the other threads you've commented on, I think I'll end this conversation now. Do find some videos you're interested in rather than ones you don't like.
True, it does appear that she shows an interest in famous/intellectual men as well as women, so she might very well be bi. And she does suck up to Starling, but unlike Finn, never pushes her luck, which is true to her character. Because that's partially the reason I like her? They don't beat us over the head with it, and that's what I like. Whenever any kind of gay issues or character is used, it's almost always overblown. And goodness knows Storm Hawks isn't actually known for it's subtlety, other than design details and background details (like the picture of Dove in Aerrow's bunk, for instance). This is just another background detail. :)
But Piper is my favorite character! She's half the reason I like the show. ): (The other half is the characters in general and the easy-going pace of the show.)
Oh, she's flirting alright. The pose she makes is pretty much a "stock gesture" in animated flirting situations.
She also winks at her female opponent in episode 4, makes "bedroom eyes" at Lark in episode 6, and has a little verbal sparring match with Finn over who Dove gets to ride with. All examples that, if Piper was male, would have led to dozens of romantic fanfics alone. >P

It's good to see a lesbian in a great series such as Storm Hawks. A good show deserves good diversity, and seeing that this fictional world isn't filled with just straights actually makes it that much more realistic.

As has been pointed out before, I will point out again. Gay characters and/or subtext CAN be in children's shows. For Storm Hawks itself, see the Murk Raiders and Argryn (sp?)
But other childrens shows have had gay elements that were far more blatant.
Characters: In Disney's Lilo and Stitch the series Pleakley and Jumba are freaking MARRIED, the cartoon Brace Face had a gay character who befriended Sharon.
Subtext: In Beast Wars Rattrap kissed Rhinox TWICE, once on the mouth!

I'd also like to add that Velma from Scooby-Doo was also an open lesbian in a lot of the original shows.
In any case, I think what the show is saying is that Piper has a girl-crush on Starling because Starling is her favorite Sky Knight. I think she was just trying to act cool to impress her idol. :P

Besides, Repton would have his sights set on Aerrow if he tried anything with Starling. She may not like him, but Repton's behaviour in Absolute Power (wanted to make her into stew, but then said he'd spare her) indicates that he might harbour impure thoughts about her.

You all are wrong...Piper and the word gay are not right. This is a KID's show. Even if the producers were trying to imply she was lesbo, they wouldn't make it as obvious as that. If you want to see Piper flirt, watch the Forbidden City episode, and she wasn't exactly cheap with her affections in ep. 4, either. I think she just admires Starling and wants to impress.

To be fair, she could very well be bi. There's similar incidents with male characters she encounters (usually in the form of gushing over them), but I've noticed a tendency for the animators to have her interact more strongly around female characters (and vice-versa). And there's no doubt Chiara Zanni adds some exasperated stuttering when there's an episode with Starling. Basically, there's enough going on in some episodes to make my gaydar go off. What's nice is it doesn't attract attention.

When I say "strongly", I don't mean in a regular friendly manner, more like a playful manner. Like when she tells Finn that Dove's riding with her. She's doing Dove a favor, but Zanni's emphasis on words and the animators making Piper gesticulate heavily, gives the scene some undertones which would be more obvious if the character was male. It's little things like that.

I know. I love Storm Hawks and all, but they aren't always subtle about things (especially in terms of comedy), but romance in general in this series has been pretty lowkey and subtle. How many people realize Aerrow has a picture of Dove in his room, for instance? I'd like it to stay that way for as long as possible.

Okay, um, you know, comparing the general sexual orientation of Piper, Aerrow, etc, it would kinda figure to me that, (unlike pokemon which sucks ass now,) that hopefully, eventually, there'd be a little romance early in the story. What I hope of is Aerrow+Piper & god forbid but I dare say, Finn+Cyclonis. Of course, He'd have to get a bit of intelligence when it comes to women as well as a kickass charm & some balls. Seriously.

True, it does appear that she shows an interest in famous/intellectual men as well as women, so she might very well be bi. And she does suck up to Starling, but unlike Finn, never pushes her luck, which is true to her character. Finn is a constant womanizer, while Piper is more detached and values someone's intellect more.

Because that's partially the reason I like her? They don't beat us over the head with it, and that's what I like. Whenever any kind of gay issues or character is used, it's almost always overblown. And goodness knows Storm Hawks isn't actually known for it's subtlety, other than design details and background details (like the picture of Dove in Aerrow's bunk, for instance). This is just another background detail. :)

Oh, she's flirting alright. The pose she makes is pretty much a "stock gesture" in animated flirting situations.
She also winks at her female opponent in episode 4, makes "bedroom eyes" at Lark in episode 6, and has a little verbal sparring match with Finn over who Dove gets to ride with. All examples that, if Piper was male, would have led to dozens of romantic fanfics alone. >P
