the early roman church took the pagan celebratory days and replaced them with Easter & Christmas in a bid to stop the newly converted slipping back into paganism when the festivals occured and to replace the pagan dates with something positive concerning Christ. when you look at in this context and remember these dates were ordained before the masses could read/write (inc priests) & nobody had a bible, you realise why they were invented.
although now, they are returning to their origins :-/
