  • Hey Erin, you rock. i am 53 light skin with yellow undertones and today i put grey shadow over my black eye liner and then used the grey to create the smoky eye look. i use the make up forever HD foundation and love it too ! i also made some primer for my matte eye shower and it definitely made it pop! keep teaching! i am going to buy some cream blush too!

  • i wear bright colors all the time. I dont care what anyone thinks either. I`ll wear neon in the winter!!!!

  • Girl I so agree with u... I have no idea why African American woman tend to shy away from bight colors. Well maybe I do, they tend to see woman that jack up there makeup and tend to say it can't be worn...lol But we sooo look good in those bright colors that bring our skin out!

  • how do I find out what my undertone is?

  • I really appreciate the information about the foundation... iv had a hard time finding a foundation for my skin color.

  • Love this.

  • I am a black woman and this video was very inspirational for me! When you pulled out the blue liner and pink lip color I had the reaction of OMG and then you made the comment that we shouldnt FREAK OUT over those colors. If it looks a hot mess take it off! (My new motto btw for trying different makeups). Thanks again for this, glad I found it!

  • I use this foundation, a primer and the MAC mineralizing finishing powder. How do you stop it from tranfering to your hands, paper, etc. I get brown color on everything.

  • Thanks a lot for the information, I have a hard time finding foundations and blush, also I agree with more colors than just brown.

  • I am a white woman and I love love love your videos - esp. these which are informative. You address issues not everyone else covers and whether they pertain to me personally, I just can't get enough of my beauty education by scandalous beauty! I know this is an old vid but I've literally watched it 100's of times - you're awesome!

  • @shellslove Wow, thanks so much!

  • Hi Erin thank you for the video. my question is i've tried mac cosmetics and i just can't seem to find a combination that works for me so i gave up on it. the thing that i loved most about mac studio fix powder was that it was longlasting and stayed on the skin, and i'm looking for something that doesn't transfered. what would you recoment?

  • @2:27 WHOA..... You just taught me everything I need to know about my makeup!!!! Love u Erin, Thank you! :D

  • nice video, u uploaded this on my birthday! lol

  • Great vid! ... Another great makeup brand who have a great range of colours are Napoleon perdis ( in there foundation stick and china doll foundations) and model co (3in1 liquid foundation) Both Aussie brands! I have worked with both currently stocking model co in my makeup studio ;)

  • I KNOW THIS IS ONE OF YOUR OLDER VIDS BUT I LOVE YOUR STYLE AND THE COLORS YOU INCORPORATE INTO YOUR MAKEUP ROUTINE. I HAVE LEARNED ALOT FROM YOU.

  • YOU are awesome. I love your videos! EVERY video is so informative and FUN to watch. THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU. Plus I have brown skin and Im always needing makeup advise thank you!!!!!!

  • Hi, I was wondering around YT in the early hours an found your vids. However, I have a question about your hair. It appears that you are rocking a natural style and I was wondering which kind of style? Also what kind of products do you use. I am rocking a natural style as well and I am open to any product that works organic or not!

  • what's the difference between NC and NW?

  • I find that girls with darker skin can wear way more colorful makeup than me. Makes me jealous!!!!!

  • your makeup looks wonderful in this vid

  • thnx for posting this vid...i think i may buy some makeup from my nearby Ulta. i especially love their Drama Color. thnx!!!

  • This was a great video! kudos :) ":Stupid amount of foundations", lol!

  • This was a great video! kudos :)

  • I think darker skin toned women look AMAZING when they use color. I'm an NC35 and I think sometimes I'm too pale to pull off using colors that I think would look even better on darker women.

  • yr d best!

  • You are soooo funny (I love the side comments, sounds and tangents you go on) makes the video seem more personable and intimate (like I'm talking to one of my girlfriends). Your so right on all your points! I just started wearing eyeshadows an have definitely begun to experiment with more pigmented colors, brighter colors, shimmery you name it I'm with it! I'm probably your shade or a shade darker and I love wearing PInk lipstick! Women who I work with who first would grimace when they would as

  • Thank's u are amazing..U have helped me so much!!!<3

  • Also are thereany cheaper products that you would suggest? I don't want to spend and arm and a leg on some of the MAC products when i don't really know how to use them yet. Please & Thank you :)

  • I am a 16 year old girl and I'm beginning to experiment with foundation and concealer. Anyway I just want to say how much i love your videos; they help sooo much. Quick question, how do I effectively blend my super darks (upper forehead, side, mouth area) with my lighter (cheeks, nose, brows) without making the tones look different from my neck. My dad is "red" and my mom is dark skinned and i didn't get a solid tone, I got patches sort of. Please help me.

  • @prettyricky021 yes! i have the exact same thing! scandalousbeauty if you can help us that would be amazing.

  • THANK YOU.

  • I got my makeup done at mac and i was nw50. idk how they can just look at you and kno lol. but now only go to mac and sephora. all you have to tell sephora is ur mac color and they will find you any other foundation to match that. everyone goes of mac colors now. but put me in a drugstore to find my own foundation and i'm lost lol

  • ha im really pale and this was in my suggestions

  • grrat vid your lipgloss is pretty

  • which foundation brand would u recommend

  • i love you already. i am not a woman of colour. but i tottaly understand for some reason. i am asian i guess. =P

  • Love this video! Thank you so much.

  • Thanks for this video--i am terrible at finding my fondation so I usually have to ask the make up artist at mac for assistance..I love bronzers though

  • Im 15 and i love makeup i usulaly dont wear foundation, concealer, or powders only for stage makeup since i act. I wanted to know if you think 15 year old is a age to start wearing makeup on a regualry day basis.I wear mascara, eyeliner and eyshadow you know the basics (yes i doo rock color!) But what about foundation and concealer? Am I too young? Is it to heavy?

  • @jtgirl7 i'm sixteen and i wear bronzer and foundation occasionally we have youthful skin so we don't really need it like that i started wearing light makeup at thirteen or fourteen so personally i think it's ok :) but anyway i'll let her answer

  • @jtgirl7 when i was 15 i did the same thing as you. i didnt really kno ne thing about foundation or concealer. i didnt start wearing concealer until a few months ago and im 18. i think that at fifteen you really should keep it simple. it will keep you looking fresher than other girls and keep ur skin better longer. besides no one wants to look back on high school pics and say wat the heck was i doin?! check out my channel for more tips

  • looks like a crackhead

  • @bigspook999 wha does a crackhead luk like?

  • @bigspook999 please put up your picture.

  • you are so beautiful thank you so much for your videos God Bless You :)

  • I understand why people say it`s only for white girls for example gloss, I don`t like using it because it makes my lips look huge. White girls can pull it off because they generally have smaller lips. I don`t like using eye-liner either because it makes my eyes look huge because I have big eyes to begin with, I think it`s because I apply it too thick.

    Anyway nice video

  • LOL. SO TRUE! You have hit the nail on the head sista. I dont really wear makeup because I am afraid of outrageous colors. I like looking as natural as possible so when I do wear say a lip gloss I tend to gravitate toward browns or golds. You have inspired me to move out of my comfort zone and explore COLOR. Thanks :)

  • love your passion for makeup!!! i like it as much as you!!

  • love your passion for makeup!!! i like it as much as you!!

  • love your passion for makeup!!! i like it as much as you!!

  • good vid

  • This is the first time that I have watched your videos. Girl you r 2 funny.

I just subscribed. I do not always stick to "safe" colors but I do not wear the kind of colors I want to because I was in the military during my "free to be" days and we had restrictions...

Thank you for this. I can never find my "perfect foundation color. I am yellow in the winter and red in the summer. I will look into prescriptives.

  • Erin why you calling folks out lol I am a C-thru, an Ohh, baby fool! and being fancy is wearing the lip liner in Chestnut??lol thanks lady for the kick in da pants, I needed that but in my defense it am a gold mineralizing queen and got a beautiful lavendar for the eye that everyone raves about! I heard if your adventurous with the eyes then the lip should be suddle. Still, your the best keep up the great work!

  • u r very inspirational,thank u 4e advice

  • @earthlingmike1 thats beyond false lol

  • Help pls. On fri I am gona try applying makeup 2 a mature lady of colour, it'll b in her hair salon so not the best set up; school said I can't use their class or their stupid makeup. So I need just a guide of what 2 have in a make up kit on a BUDGET. I have access 2 all the labels but theres way 2 much 2 choose from...All I have on my wish list 4 fri so far is brick red colour corrector, pink blush, black, green & gold eyeshadows, gloss, masc, kohl, liq liner, translucent powder :o) Thanx

  • I am totally not a make-up wearing chick and when you were talking about the brown, I laughed because that is me when i do wear make-up. SO how do i find the perfect make-up for me if I have NO CLUE about it. I am about Kelly Rowland's Color.

  • this was actually VERY GOOD! i wonder those same things... and it's true.. just TRY things, and i bet you'll find your favourite thing. but yes i LOVE neon type coloured eye liner. it makes the eyes pop out especially when i dont feel like putting on eye shadow. and you DONT have to be light for it to be noticeable. just cuz they say we're black doesn't mean we're BLACK! USE SOME COLOUR! lol

  • i love color!! i actually had to buy neutrals cause i have soooo much color!!

  • cocolo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • thanx 4 this!

  • Do to the snow, I had the pleasure of watching most of your vids. Great advice. I'm new to the eyeshadow arena. Thx

  • Love the vids trying to figure this out to do an amateur photo shoot with some friends. THNX

  • Glad to help!

  • Great vid!!!

  • i just recently discovered my perfect mac shade is a mix of warm and cool also, NW45 with NC50!

  • @Chehlove Yay great!

  • i love that liner.. bought it 2 weeks ago...

  • Wow! You had some beautiful things to say about women of color and the things that we have accustomed ourselves to. I really feel inspired to do something different!

  • @lovelysparkleshine Thank you so much!

  • u are right about that blueish color! I think your eyes look great and hey, "white" girls like me wouldnt want to plaster a bright color all over either haha . so you are so right about , its just how you use the colors and dont be afraid to try different things. Plus i got big ol' glasses so i think makeup looks bad on my eyes anyways 'cus i dont know what im doing! lol

can you make a video about glasses and makeup? I hope a lot of girls see this and take your advice here.

  • i love the points you make here! i'm hispanic, so i've got brown/tan skin too and it was fun to get your pep talk about color! :)

  • I hav used Iman before but i am right in the middle between light and dark, and i can never find anything that fits my skin tone, i am little on the lighter side but not so fair i could pass for white.

  • what store is Black Opal mostly sold at, I don think Ive seen any.

  • walmart has it

  • @themissjasmine

You can also try Iman and Black Radiance

  • i love browns!! but in agree with you tho!!

  • What shade do you wear in Becca? We have similar skin color, with me having a bit of variation *lol*. I have been lemming after the foundation stick for a while and I am ready to make the splurge.

  • Not true. It depends on what shade of red.

  • really good information in this video. loved it. just a suggestion though: please use better lighting in your videos. it would would highlight your face and your makeup. 5 stars

  • how do you guys feel about fashion fair, let me know thanks

  • Personally I don't care for the brand because the undertones of that line for the foundation is too red and it makes me break out like crazy. I would love to support black businesses but man they need to do a complete overhaul on that line. From packaging design to the reformulation of the foundation and skincare line.

  • u are so right i went and got some yesterday and the really dark one was a good fit because it came out lighter on my face, but the rest were red, but if you know of a better brand please let me know, thanks so much

  • Well what I like so far is Iman foundation sticks, but again it is not 100% perfect since I need two shades and it rubs on everything. I tried Black Opal foundation sticks but it was too emollient for my skin type (my fault). I tried NARS foundation, the firming formulation, and I hated it. It was too heavy and plain weird. I probably needed two different shades to make it work but it is pretty pricey and I do not care much for liquid foundations. I will keep you posted.

  • @gommiebears At least Fashion Fair's packaging is no longer that horrible pink looking so dated.

  • i so agree! my sister and nieces said that bcuz i'm dark skin i cant wear blush but beyonce can, i was shocked that once i thought the same thing when i was younger. it's a shame that we aren't taught different. i just started using mary kay and i finally found my true color! i no longer have to use 2 diff shades and mix them! and it's only $18 for tinted moisturizer, medium & full coverage, loose, pressed & mineral powder, and creme foundation.

  • become a youtube partner , they can go over 10 minutes

  • Im an african girl living in ireland and i absolutely agree with you, i cannot STAND this idea that black girls cant wear bright makeup it does my head in because, i wear bright makeup and lipstick and i look GOOD in it. c'mon girls, try out something that is not brown for once! its a powerful feeling knowing you refuse to be confined to makeup that is not expected of you!

  • @DarkPanthera Exactly once in a while I'll see a dark skinned black young woman wear a dark hot pink lipstick and it will look good on her so what's the problem?

  • haha, you are one funny chick! I feel black girls on the skin tone stuff though, finding the right shade can be really hard. Even though I'm considered Caucasian by decent, my roots are Mediterranean, I have a hard time finding a color that isn't pink or ashy on me. MUF 153 seems perfect though. Keep it up, thanks for the vid.

  • do your makeup ever get on your clothes? or when you hug boys if its on their shirt tips to help girls of cover, yes im asian but i refer to myself as a woman of color.

tips are very helpful to me and my black girlfriends thxx.

  • also what do you feel a wedding look is for a bride

  • are we the same complexion i also wear nc 50 aswell i need some more tips

  • OMG! Chestnut and Oh baby! is so me! I don't wear make up but I'm trying to learn. Thanks for the vids!

  • You speak with clarity, I agree with you I'm over the brown liner and gloss... But thats what they give the us at the makeup counters. I'm dark complected with full lips and I prefer brighter colors on me i feel it makes my skin tone pop. I appreciate your video, thank you sis

  • You may look good in true red lipsticks and glosses if you're around Erin's color and if your much darker than her, try the darker true reds.

  • I love all of your videos and I'm so happy that we are the same complexion. I'm going out today to purchase a number of the different Mac lip colors that you have tried. Can you recommend and good moisturizer for combination skin? I'm still trying to go through all of your videos so I apologize if you have already discussed this. Thank you for all that you do.

  • I LOVE ALL OF YOUR VIDEOS. They're very informative, inspirational and your beauty rocks. keep doing your thing :)

  • girl i got d same exact powder and creme in mac nw43 in powder and in creme nc50

  • Girl you got me dying laughing cuz everytime i go to mac they automactically show me oh baby and chestnut way to funny

  • Really? They've never presumed anything with me. I'm glad because I don't like those assumptions.

  • this vid is so needed!

  • Thanx for this video, but sorry to tell....Loreal is dumping the Prescriptive line in 2010.

  • thank you for making this vid. :) very truthful :)

  • love that line at 2:41. "which is a lie" love it

  • i jus cant get it right!!

  • This video isn't just for "The Sisters" or Women of Color' as you; Scandalous Beauty's video demonstrator put it. I'm a fair skinned woman who found this video very useful. I plan on attending Beauty School to become an Esthetician to do skincare and makeup on any color of a woman's face. The video helped me to think, Hey! I need to know how to do makeup on a huge variety of women's skin tones. Fair-skinned that's what I'm used to doing makeup on is my skin tone. Thank you so much.

  • That's awesome!

  • I tried percriptives and was not happy.. With all of that mixing they could not get it to my shad. I wore it and look like a corpse. I look ashy and dead... I have very dark skin and it is hard to find colors that complement me.

  • I'm sorry you are struggling with this. I am dark skinned as well and am often trying new things. Right now I'm happy with Cover FX pressed mineral powder in B35 and B45. To warm up, I use the Guerlain Terracotta bronzer in 02. Shop at Sephora. If you're not satisfied you can make returns - no questions asked. Also, avoid products with talc and titanium dioxide as the first few (primary) ingredients. They cause the ashy look. I hope this helps and good luck!

  • This comment was for Kacheampong. I'm not sure why it didn't line up with her comment about Prescriptives custom foundation.... BTW, I also use MakeUp Forever full cover waterproof liquid concealer and waterproof face & body makeup.

  • I love this video ! I NEVER EVER USE BROWN ND REFUSE TO. ITS UGLY ! Lol

I love corals nd light pinkish-reds.

  • lol

  • I love this! I am a junkie when it comes to cosmetics! Thanks for the websites. I went and checked them out right away. Saw some really cool stufff!

  • I love love love this vid. I had to agree with everything u sd. I too am an NC50 and I hate brown lippies. I have 3 out of like 50: Touch, Film Noir and Oh Baby! LOL, the rest are pinks, plums and coral combos. I've subscribed and can't wait to watch ur other stuff.

  • omg my cousin bought me oh baby for my birthday..and by that time i loved colored lip glossess and eyshadows..etc..and i tried it on and I said WTF lol! this is so glittery and bland! and brown..i stopped using it lol but i thanked her and didnt tel her i didnt like it lol

  • lol that's how it goes!

  • believe it or not i use my lipstick as a blush lol

  • Yay for creativity!

  • What color are you in black opal foundation and iman foundation and powder?

    Thanks for sharing.

  • I'm beautiful Bronze in Black Opal, Can't remember the Iman names off hand

  • OMG I am that same shade. In Iman you would probably fall under Earth 2 or Earth 3. I use both because of different undertones.

  • I remember the last makeup I bought and applied to my face made it look orange and weird...hard to choose which one is right for my skin tone....thanks

  • Thank u =.)

  • i personally think with me being back myself that bright pink looks good on us

  • Exactly what is a beauty editor? Just curious.

  • you have cool and warm in your hands. nw(warm) nc(cool)

  • i kno im late but this video is great.. color is "in"anyway... love the video erin!!!

  • I'm sad to hear that a lot of black women don't feel comfortable using colors. I usually tend to notice that colors look amazing on darker skins because GOOD eye-shadows really pop.

Either way, we always have the option to try things at home to see if we like them.

  • love ya subscribe

  • the best make-up vid so far...

  • Girl! You just called me out. My first purchases from M.A.C were Oh Baby! lip glass and Chestnut lipliner. Ha! That is too funny. Okay, my new mission...get some color in my life. Thanks for this video, the info you've provided is invaluable.

  • I am trying to venture out and use makeup everyday and not be a plain jane. Where I have an issue is after using the mac studio fix that I have after a while I end up being shiney. I have used different things to help matify but still end up shiney what do you recommend? Also what is the best way to apply the studio fix brush or the puff thingy (sorry about the terminology :-) )that comes with it? What do you reccomend. PLEASE HELP!

  • MUFE does have a stupid amount of ranges..I love it im always the darkest but the undertone is PERFECT

  • Nice video !

    its so ..brown ! loool

    imma subscribe !

  • Thank you!

  • This is fab. And as a black girl who LOVES colors, THANK YOU!

  • Preach it Girl..Preach it...yes a lot of us are afraid to venture outside the neutral zone..I for one love bright color. But everything u said in this video is SO ON POINT..I JUST SUBSCRIBED TO YOU...

  • Look at my last video and see how bad I look right now. I'm about to start a overhaul of my face and hair. Can you give me some basics to start.

  • how do u figure out wat ur udertone is?

  • I LOVED this video. It was one of the best I've seen so far. What about mineral makeups. Every foundation I've tried (except macs pressed powder and prescriptives mineral) makes me itch... I've found a really good one and I'd like to see you do something on the minerals... finding the right color can be an adventure... the girl at the counter matched me with the wrong color and tried to convince me that the "tanned" look was good. I've found 1 I can blend & create but I'd luv 2 c u do it.

  • I don't use mineral makeup b/c I've never found anything good enough!

  • One really GREAT mineral makeup i absoulutley LOVE is Sheercover.

  • I don't blame you. A lot of them look ashy on my skin also but my mother loves it *kanye shrug*.

  • Thank you I have been trying to find a foundation to match my skin. I'm going to check out the websites you recommend for women of color.

  • Can u take a look at my slide show and tell me what my under tone should be..PLZ< PLZ<PLZ

  • Hi SB, if were in Fashion Fair (Pure Brown Glow ) cream to powder. Whatt color would you recommend that I wear in Mac Studio Scuplt and the Studio Fix.

  • What is your background in makeup, as in, when did you start wearing makeup and how did you pick up so many different brands over the years?

  • Here in the tropics we neva wear all brown! Great video.

  • YOU ARE AMAZING!!!!!! thank you sooo much for this it's sooo hard to find good info for darker skin tones ur my hero <3

  • what if your light skinned black like i am?

  • was kinda dissipointed that you didnt talk about eyeshadow

  • This video is for me..I don't wear much makeup,,I like it but don't know much about makeup..rather trying to look silly I do tend to stay on the safe side and go with brown colors,,I've always wanted to play with other colors but have been too scared. ..Thanks for this video : )

  • alot of black women are brown of yellow so you sound strange...

  • brown or yellow you cant be serious try honey beige golden bronze mocha caramel milk chocolate dark chocolate olive red undertones orange and yellow undertones beautiful array of colors

  • umm are you talking to me b/c i know that already. that what i was trying to tell her. i mean black women are sometimes yellow or brown. she asked about brown and yellow ppl and black ppl can bebrown or yellow. damn. read the username i obviously know the colors we come in.

  • hahaha, thats true. No one is truly the color black. Most are variations of brown.

  • thankz for this vid i think i need to wear more bright colours rather than sticking to the safe ones thanks :D

  • how do you know if you have cool or warm undertones?

  • when lights directly on you you will see either a yellow or light orange glow, if your a warm tone or a red or dark brown tone if your cool :D hope that helped

  • Also, Perscriptives will test you and give you your undertones at no charge.

  • ok my question is this ; i use proaciv on my skin cus i have acne & they have makeup & i neva tried em & my skin kinda chanqes durinq the winter cus in ny its qets cold & i was wonderinq if th makeup you use will help keep acne to a minimum or make you breakout more ? or is it even qood to mix makeup .

  • girl i love it you was talking about me with that brown. I just started watching you tube within the past month, I just started wearing colors on my eyes, but i cant get rude of my chestnut lip gloss im afraid of color but i trying girl you had me laughing when you was talking about me.

  • im a nw 15 but i bought taj mahal cuz of u !! :)

  • hi! great video, but i have a question. what color becca powder do you use? my complexion is about that of sanaa lathan and i am not sure which color to purchase? please help? thanks soo much for the video!

  • hi erin , um i love what u did but im kinda clueless when it comes to make up sometimes . i was wondering if u cud help me with eye shadow choices for ma complexion which is really dark like DEEP DARK THANX

  • thanks for the video! I really want to try that eyeliner, what brand is it?

  • thank u sooooo much

  • It's so strange about the colour thing because I'm the opposite!

My mother (who's white) wouldn't dream of wearing colour and is OBSESSED with brown whereas I always go for obscenely bright and fun colours. The way I see it, I'm brown anyway so why add more brown? Haha

    This was really helpful btw!

  • does anyone know where i can find IMAN cosmetics. i really wanna try it

  • Hi,

A lazy place to start is eBay. There are sellers with hundreds of reviews who only sell cosmetics. Avoid sellers who do not specialise in vending cosmetics and only have a bottle or tube or compact of something to sell.

  • I thought Target sold Iman? That's what the Target ads say in Essence mags. I know years ago JC Penney sold it when Iman first came to shops.

  • try macy's.

  • Thanks for correcting so many of my misconceptions! You're a treasure!
