@RODALCO2007 yes more sugar less kno3 :-) 60-70% sugar and 40-30% kno3 should still burn and make A LOT of smoke (because there is not enough oxygen in the mix). You just need to mix them good and have a good fuse. Your mix had a lot oxidizer so it burned vigorously :-)

the mix is somewhat transparent to IR so it can go off all at once or burn too fast, a bit of carbon black or similar in the mix helps. if you dont melt it you can get an explosion when pressure and heat builds up and iginites it all at once.
ok rodalco-im a pyro and know about smoke recipes-you need to add lactose up to 50 percent of the total mix-using a sparkler to ignite is also upsetting the mix-maybe try crushing the sparkler composition and roll your own fuses with it-use cigerette paper or rice paper and roll them wet and allow to dry.
you can also add dyes to the lactose to get colour in the smoke.
you can also use wood flour instead of lactose and you dont need to do the molten nitrate thing for smoke-just pack ...cont.
cont....pack tight into a thick walled cardboard tube,and make a clay plug nozzle with clay based kitty litter and drill out the centre of the plug-fax roll tube works well.
with a toilet roll you have way to much composition and the heat goes critical-in a skinny tube with a clay plug,only smoke comes out.
Some smoke bomb. More like a rocket engine.

This was 60 g KNO3 and 40 g sugar warmed and caramelised and 1 teaspoon baking soda added afterwards in the soft mix.
Then stuffed in the cardboard toilet rol and let set for about 2 hours, taped and ignited.
