  • On the version of Live at Greek Theater '79 that I downloaded, it starts with this exact version of Behind the Mask but then launches into an amazing version of La Femme Chinoise before Cosmic Surfin' - anybody able to solve this mystery for me, that is, why is La Femme Chinoise on my copy/not on this copy?

  • excellent!!! :-)

  • Funny thing is, the sequencer that Matsutake is working on back there had no memory or save function, so while the band is playing one song, he's programming the next one during it!

They are A Top Notch Musicians in JAPAN at that time , and all of them is still, Original YMO are three -Dr, Ba, Key-. Most popular person is Key-R.Sakamoto., .needless to say ? hahaha...

  • I still have the 1st YMO album in mint condition ! Yeah !

  • Refer to also " 1000Knives YMO ( by matsumoymo) " in youtube .

YMO's GreekTheater Live is perfectly reproduced in exactly the same form as it was by the latest music software !!!

  • Comment removed

  • fuqin voice augmentation...well....they were probably amongst the first to send their voices through a computer on stage in a band...so i guess they get a gold star

  • Brilliant! I hope I get to see them live some day. They still ROCK!!

I think it is very interesting that Takahashi is wearing a Communist China military hat.

  • おぉぉぉ・・・ これ良いですね♪ 79年か、、洋楽70's-80'sにハマってた頃だなぁ♪ YMOは何気にその後、夢中になったかな^^;

    Greek Theatre 1979

  • I spotted a polymoog oh yeah, this is great

  • 5:03~しびれます(^^;

    まさに原点です。懐かしい。

  • 5:03~しびれます(^^;

    懐かしい。

  • I totally just jizzed in my pants.

  • Beautiful. Just beautiful.

  • It was before stupid geeks who can't read a note just copy and paste some samples in a computer and say "I'm a musician!" Wrong! YMO used technology but first, they were real musicians! Give a piano to a techno DJ, they can't play. Fuck that! YMO was gods.

  • @smsuikup

Actually I think the real problem with music now days is that it is so polarized between genres and serious or pop . . . you are generalizing when you say techno DJs and sampling isn't good music. There is bad and good music in every genre, even if you don't like much electronic dance music I bet you could find some that you at least like as background music.

  • fantastic stuff.lov this band

  • first track is "Behind the mask"

  • The intro. from the man was great as I'd this Live Album 2X years ago. Thanks for the uploaded!! Bring back the old day.

  • Outstanding!

Brits of a certain age might remember The Old Grey Whistle Test. They showed Cosmic Surfin' from this very video. I was blown away and they've been firm favourites ever since. I introduced my 14 year old daughter to YMO (when she was 12!) and she loves them too.

These guys still rock even today. Thanks so much for posting this.

    =:~)

  • Thanks so much for your great comments. I do remember the old grey whistle test appearance. They did release a dvd of whistle test performances. I did look ages ago to see if ymo were featured but didnt see anything concrete. If anyone can confirm they're on the dvd, it would be worth picking up.

    All the best :]

  • @cdssmac I Love YMO,for almostb30 years,so beautiful.

  • great guitar player too.. i wish they turned him up louder.. and given him a little more parts haha.... but i love how the drums are even triggered sounds too.. this is music from a future we haven't reached yet. i was born in the early 80s and this is my birth music haha.. the optimism of technology and the future.. i felt that growing up.. and i hear it in this beautiful music.

  • behind the mask is a trip. love the 80's electro sound then into the 70's disco and the vocoder.. ok.. amazing.. Look at all those synth.. what a pain in the ass to set up! UGH!

  • Gotta love the late 70's!

  • I like the Sakamotos vocoder part in this song

  • What separated Yellow Magic Orchestra from Kraftwerk and The Human League and those early electronic bands was that they had more complex musical sensibilities rather than just the atmospheric elements.

  • Sugoi!! Great Stuff! :-)

  • Haha, that drummer is awesome.

  • add &fmt=18 at the end of the url and you'll have HQ with stereo :).

  • I may agree that the text they want to sing may not be the text the audience will hear. Therefore I must say that YMO and singing does not belong together. I didn't say I disagreed it sounded like "wer starving"

  • You are so so off! "we're going and starving"? Just look up the lyrics at google =)

  • That's Ryuichi Sakamoto on vocals, but the vocoder makes it imposible to hear if he's singing in Japanese or some other language... ;)

  • This is damn good actually.

  • I saw them when they opened for the Tubes at the Greek...can't remember if this was it. Makes you want to dust off the analog toys in the attic. Some music just doesn't lose its appeal!!

  • It beats everything that they brought that huge sequencer onto the stage to make such simple sound while we only have to use today computer-installed soft one.

    Matsutake's performance is superb!

  • Is this the concert from 'Public Pressure'?

  • It is indeed :) but you'll notice if you've heard PP, that the song after this intro is behind the mask and not cosmic surfin'

  • Ah, I'm going the other way round, I wanted to see what I'd be getting if I bought PP (if it's even available for sale anywhere). All I've heard from the album is Cosmic Surfin' so far

  • If you look at my other video 'YMO - Arrive in London' you'll hear 'The End of Asia' as background music. That is also from public pressure, but where PP's version had no guitar, the video version does. There was a dispute with record companies and they edited /removed the guitar out for PP. Good album btw :)

  • what is this song at the beginning called. I heard it somewhere before and cant remember!

  • Behind the mask :)

  • love this shit...

wish i lived in that time

  • CoooooooooooooooooooooooooooL

At that time, I was an ardent fan of YMO.

    Of course, now,too!!

  • The song at 4:00 is just 2 mutch.

So nice....I am to young :(

Would really loved to see them live....

    Brgds

    YMO FAN in Sweden

  • Song @ 4.00 is 'Cosmic Surfin' :)

My dad is 70 and this is still his favourite!

  • It was the Logic System first album, with the bamboo on the front.Yes I kick myself now but not for the money value, just the fact I could have had a proper copy of that album rather than my overplayed scratchy vinyl - which I still love nonetheless.

  • This reminded me of writing an email way back in 1998 regarding Logic System and getting this reply. I never took the offer up... but how cool was it to get a response from the man himself?

DEAR PAUL, THANK YOU FOR YOUR INTEREST TO MY ALBUM.

UNFOTUNATLY, THAT ALBUM RELEASE WAS LONG TIME AGO.

SO, I COULD SEND YOU ETHIER DAT OR CASSTTE. PLEASE

WRITE ME YOUR ADD & WHAT TAPE YOU LIKE. BEST REGARDS,

    LOGIC SYSTEM HIDEKI MATSUTAKE

  • Wow, that is simply amazing. You should of gone ahead and taken him up on the offer.

  • I used to frequently write to peter barakan (translator featured on many albums) and he not only sent me hosono and sakamoto's autograph but also sent me a pre-release tape copy of sakamoto's 'Futurista' (futurist fellow?) album ('86 i think). Sadly i dont have any of the items now. My mother died in '86 and we moved.. so i guess they got mixed up in the move. The autographs alone would be worht a mint on ebay today lol. Scuze me while i kick myself lmao

  • P.s what logic system album were you enquiring about if you don't mind me asking? I have both 'logic system' (1st one/classic electronica) and 'Venus' (the 2nd album / More fusion orientated but with some electronica also).
