2ILLnificent, dude big daddy didn't slaughtered defenseless humans, his zombies did most of the slaughtering, big daddy only wanted revenge on kaufman for the constant raids and after he killed kaufman he led away his zombies sparing the remaining humans because big daddy in a way regained bits of his former humanity and didn't saw the point to kill the rest of the humans as well...if you notice big daddy didn't munch on any human ;)

@hellhander Why waste the ammo if they aren't attacking you? A big recurring theme in Romero's movies is that the zombies are slowly going back to a more human intelligence. In Night of the Living Dead, they were mindless corpses driven by hunger, but feared fire. In Dawn of the Dead, they flocked to the mall guided by a subconscious urge. In Day of the Dead, Bub proved that they don't need to eat and can feel affection. In this, it showed that they were capable of launching an organized attack.

The film after this was actually a prequel that(supposedly) took place at the same time as Night of the Living Dead, although I'm not sure how they had internet access in the 1960s, but I think Romero might be getting a little eccentric in his age, so let's just roll with it.

God damn, I love this movie. The rich people were so proud of how safe and secure their city was, but it only ended up trapping them. EXACTLY like how in Night of the Living Dead, Cooper insisted on staying in the basement, even though it would become his own death trap. Great fucking finale to a great set of classic horror movies.

@Indudey360 Like ometta said, the Zombies leveled the field by slaughtering the cocky rich folks who turned down the lower class, which Big Daddy knew who they were. He did not target them because they (lower class AND zombies) were victims of Kaufman's tyranny. When Big Daddy killed Kaufman and Cholo, he begins his retreat order. Riley ordered to hold fire because Big Daddy and the Zombies were not gonna assault the city anymore, and were "looking for a place to go"

They decided not to kill Big Daddy because he broke Kaufman's tyranny by destroying the class system and leveling the playing field. Making all humans equal again and on some level on even terms with the zombies themselves. They felt they owed Big Daddy a debt of grattitude. Also, if you'll notice, the zombies begin to withdraw from the city after they eat most of the "social elite", who serve as the villans in the story, turning them into shambling and rotting anti-heroes in their own right.

@impmaster2 I never said they were heroes. I said "anti-heroes", which means a flawed hero, usually one who does heroic things but for selfish reasons. Whether Big Daddy was a mindless killer or not, they still felt they owed him the courtesy of sparing his life because of the good his actions caused, whether directly or indirectly. Also, if you'll notice, he specifically ignores the other humans(unless they get in his way) in favor of pursuing Kaufman, meaning that he at least has an agenda.

Big Daddy was noticeably distraught at the sight of his undead brethren being slaughtered by humans. He might have once worked for Kaufman, and recognized him from some vague memory resurfacing, or maybe he could recognize a leader(like him) based on scent or something.

Maybe he saw a bit of himself in them, maybe he sensed they were oppressed, maybe he was just saving them for breakfast. Whatever the reason, he only sought to destroy the ones that were killing his "people".

Well, they aren't really as "innocent" as you might think. True, they probably didn't deserve to die, but they chose to ignore the fact that there were people in poverty, starving and fighting to survive. They were the privileged upper class, lording over the poor and the sick and feeling an undeserved sense of entitlement because they were more beautiful. It's actually a very nice social commentary if you think about it.
