  • @Pattydole70 Actually smartass, Jennifer has said herself in multiple interviews that she feels her American accent is her 'natural' accent, the one that comes most naturally to her when speaking. Her nationality has nothing to do with it, since last time I checked, accent is not genetic. I'm 1/4 Irish but that doesn't mean I have 1/4 Irish accent.

  • I thought she was a Brit through and though. You can still hear small bits of British accent in her voice. I wonder if she considers herself an American. She's listed as British-American.

  • @akjoda It's funny to watch her accept awards and use whatever accent is applicable for her location. Apparently this is pretty normal for kids who grew up like she did. I have heard Gwyneth Paltrow say her daughter talks with a British accent at school in London, but speaks with an American accent at home with the family or in the US. I'd say you have to be pretty intelligent to pull that off!

  • Haha! She sounds totally different to in her P&P BAFTA speech. Still giving credit to the wig though.

  • She is a brilliant actress and it's genetic. Her mother is the talented and stunning Rosemary Harris.

  • does she look a little like meryl streep to anyone else?

  • Jennifer Ehle è bravissima e bellissima!

  • i saw her naked on the camomile lawn, shes hot!

  • @halloweensorachan ... OMG I never realized that Jennifer was American.. that proves to me just what a fantastic actor she is.. Because her English accent in P&P was fabulous... AND it is my favorite version too... :0)x

  • @wenglishsal She is half-American, half-English.

  • @wenglishsal She normally speaks with a British accent because she is also British.

  • @Pattydole70 ... Hee hee, thank you for the info, duly noted.. I also saw her in an interview on US Channel, after posting my original message, and she did both accents, she can drop into either at the drop of a hat it would seem, because of her duel parentage and living across both sides of the 'pond' What a beautiful and clever actress she is.

Jennifer will always be 'Lizzie Bennet' to me though, the P&P with the gorgeous Colin Firth 1998.. *sighs*

Best regards from Wales UK :0)x

  • @wenglishsal No problem. I only found out a few days ago that she was English and American. You are right she is always going to be my favorite Lizzy Bennet. I think that 1995 is my favorite Pride and Prejudice. Mrs. Bennet is a complete scream! LOL!

  • @Pattydole70 ... YEP I agree with you Alison Steadman IS the most iconic 'Mrs Bennet'..

"...I have such pains in my head, flutterings about me, spasms in my body, that I can't get any rest night or day..."

she truly is a marvel and the scenes with Jennifer, Alison and Benjamin Whitrow 'Mr Bennet', are my favourite... hee hee :0)X

  • @Pattydole70 Not necessarily. She was born in North Carolina and lived there for awhile, so an American accent may actually be her "normal" one. But obviously an English accent is very natural for her as well, having lived there too. (I try to avoid referring to a British accent, because British actually encompasses a lot of different accents including Irish and Scottish.)

  • Celebs love a good cry!

  • She's been cast for the part of Catelyn Stark in HBO's A Game Of Thrones pilot . Yay!!!! I so hope that HBO picks up the mini series!!!

  • wow, this is exciting news to hear.

  • You are right, she's not Elizabeth Bennett, she is the actress Jennifer Ehle who has played Elizabeth Bennett character in Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen. And she is the best "Elizabeth" ever played in the movie.

  • She is my most favourite and esteemed In the art of the thespian....and can only be construed as the pinnacle of excellence, In a word I am most pleased with Miss Elizabeth Bennett. She leaves me highly satisfied.....for a Yank! LOL

  • @maggiethefox Why's it an issue if she's a Yank? Who cares! A good actress is a good actress.

  • EXCEPT... that it is...

  • one of the finest actors around! =)

  • So strange how she alternates her accent between British and American. Quite a talent!

  • I didn't know she was American! It does sound weird to hear her speak with a U.S. accent. (and have blonde hair!) She'll always be brunette and British to me. Lol. And dressed in early-1800's fashion. x

  • Is beautiful..

  • if jennifer is american or irish she does a stunning accent in p and p, if only all of us brits spoke as posh as that! american actors always make us sound posh and its SO embarassing.

  • She was born in Winston-Salem, NC but lived both in the US and UK.

  • How do you think we Americans feel? We don't have cool accents at all! And now our youth culture is destroying whatever dignity was left in the English language by refusing to speak it properly. Ugh. I'd rather fake a posh British one ANY day. :)

  • Her mother is Rosemary Harris, the English actress. I'm sure all these years she had a great acting coach besides her :D.

  • @xwelshbeautyx I would be a terrible actress. I tried to do a Luton accent and my friends from there laughed so hard at me. I keep making faces when I tried to pronounce Sweet heart without to t or the h.LOL!

  • i full love her!:) best actress out there:)

  • I was suprised she was a blonde after I watched Pride and Predjudice BBC version.

  • same here! i reckon she looks better with dark brown hair though

  • yeah....I wish i could tell her in person....i dont noe if she would be freaked that a teen kid watched the show and did research on her though...:P

  • you're a teen? omg so am i! im almost 15. and ive watchd pride and prejude 50 000 000 times alredy! lol i luv it! its lyk mi fav movie! sum of mi frends think im wierd but sum of mi other frends ive actually got 2 lyk p&p. lol

  • omg we hv so much in common!!! except for the fact i'm only 13 and a half and I have no friends hu like p&p though.....

  • oh realy? ive only got lyk 1 or 2 frends who lyk it tho, da rest think its wierd and boring, or just havnt seen it. they just dnt understand it i think. lol im so glad ive sum1 who lyks p&p as much as i do! lol. im tia bi the way. wats your name?

  • lily

  • oh kool! thats a nice name. :) hey do u hav msn?

  • no...:(....anyway whts ur name?

  • damm! o well. my names tia.

  • same! i'm 15 and love literature like pride and prejudice (i also loved romeo + juliet with clare danes in it) i feel i like i'm the only girl in my class that understands it, my friends all think pride and prejudice is boring :-( colin firth was a great mr darcy. god....is jennifer ehle american?

  • omg! we hav soooooo much in common!!!! i feel da exact same way bout mi fwends! they just dont no what theyre missin out on!!!lol yer jenn is american. i always fort she was british! she dus da accent so well in p&p! =)

  • She divided her childhood between the U.S. and England, so both her American and English accents are authentic.

  • Yes I know how you feel, Im 15 and love literature too. I love and read all the Jane Austen's, big fan of romeo & juliet. My fav is pride and prejudice. Sierra

  • I'm just glad that she's happily married!!! I was kind of disappointed to find out before that her relationship with Colin Firth(Mr. Darcy) didn't work out. Anyway, I'm so happy for Jennifer Ehle's success in life.

  • I just love Jennifer Ehle's acting in "Pride and Prejudice".

  • I fell in love with Jennifer Ehle after watching Pride & Prejudice. She is one of the best actors ever!

  • she does look a bit like Meryl Streep.

  • your right she does kinda

  • Anyone else think she looks like Meryl Streep in One True Thing? Younger, obviously, but she looks so much like her!

    I love Jennifer Ehle!

  • I totally would not have known that this was the Jennifer Ehle that did "Pride & Prejudice". I knew that she was blond because it is mentioned on the extras disc on the movie but I did not know that the accent might have been fake. She did such a great job in the movie that it is a shame that she is not been in as many Hollywood movies as some of the other period actors (i.e. Colin Firth, Paltrow)

  • No offence, but why record off the telly?

  • Wow, I never realised she was American. Her British accent in pride and prejudice is really good!

  • I know its so convincing i couldnt believe it when i found out.

  • i'm shocked i totally thought she was English. guess it just goes to show what a great actress she is

  • Actually she is half English, half American. Her mother is English actress Rosemary Harris. She grew up in both the UK and the States.

  • Me too! She had such a wonderful accent in 'The Camomile Lawn' I had no idea she was American!

  • Actually she is half English, half American. Her mother is English actress Rosemary Harris. She grew up in both the UK and the States.

  • shes half american and half british. she grew up in both countries and so is able to switch between accents with ease.

  • She used to have a full British accent not just in P&P.

  • wow.... she still the only person to play elizabeth bennet on P&P.... kiera knightly smelled.

  • i wouldn't sak K.K smelled but but she was definatly nothing on Jennifer

  • I prefered her as Miss Elizabeth Bennet in Pride & Prejudice..... and in full British accent !

  • Yeah, that's weird, what happened to her accent? Or was her British accent in P & P fake?

  • i think jenny looks a wee bit like meryl streep

  • OMG i love Jennifer Ehle, i saw her in The Philadelphia Story in London, and i just love her as Miss Bennett aswell :)

  • I love the music they played every time that show won an award. It is awesome, you can hear it in the video. The show itself isn't a musical unless I am misinformed, so I wonder what the music is. Please tell me if you know!

  • That's the show's theme song. Although Utopia isn't a musical, there is much instrumental music and a little singing in it. There is a CD of it- look up "Coast of Utopia" and "Mark Bennett". It's beautiful, I have it.

  • thanks!

  • She's half-british too and considers herself british too.

  • She's American! Born in North Carolina, living in NY State.

  • it simply makes me sick to see her loose her real British accent... it is beyond ghastly...

  • yes, while she sounds wonderful with the British accent, she's no less an American. born in North Carolina but grew up travelling around the world. even so, when she speaks, her accent is sort of mixed British and American.
