kipperluongo is actually right and for awhile around the time datszyuk was drafted the wings had the most "interest" in european skaters they scouted alot there and thats how they got datsyuk in the 5th round and that hapened with lidstrom and zetterburg too i dont like the red wings at all but there smart lmao and btw goalies dont never get drafted high my coach dave depinto was drafted 1st overall in the 1989 NHL supplementary draft (entry draft) hes a goalie

You're confusing NHL Central Scouting, and a teams personal scouts.

NHL Central Scouting are the guys who go out, and rank the top "Sure Fire Prospects" for the upcoming draft.

The Red Wings team personal scouts don't submit a scouting report to anybody. They are strictly confidential to the team they work for. After your Sidney Crosbys. and Ovechkins are picked, your team selects players usually it has looked at, and liked. My point is the Wings are good at this. Finding the gems in Europe.

Yeah, but my point was, the peerless scouting staff of the Detroit Red Wings ability to pick out the gems more consistently. Even Johan Franzen who is like a 35 Goal scorer and is a phenom in the playoffs breaking MANY Playoff scoring records. Ville Leino another prospect.

I know there are lots of late drafted gems, and even many guys who went undrafted who emerged as scoring touch players.

They weren't crap before they got into the NHL. They were Professionals, just overlooked, and unscouted. Pavel Datsyuk is a top 3 player in the NHL these days, and nobody was looking at him, due to how remote his team was, scouts just didn't get there. Somebody from the Wings did though.

You're wrong. Detroit just doesn't shove young players(like some teams, COUGH Pittsburgh) into huge roles early. When Datsyuk first arrived, it was Yzerman, Federov and Shannahan carrying the load. He got VERY limited ice time, with those 3 hall of famers, and at times was even a healthy scratch. His talent was undeniable, and limitless even in his early days, he was just protected until he was ready.

Nah, he was a rare unknown gem. Why use your first round pick on a guy who isn't going to be drafted at all? Use a late round pick to snag up such talent. To do it any other way would be stupid. It was perfect. Same thing with Zetterberg, another later round pick, who flourished in Detroits system.

I'm not even a Wings fan really, but I gotta give them credit. That's why they won all those Championships and are always contenders, being smart.

dude the way the draft works is that all the scouts put in there reports for every player eligible for draft. From there the europeans and north americans are separated. Then they rank them from best skater to worst skater(skater meaning player) for example john tavares was ranked #1 in north american skaters. Datsyuk wasn't rated very high and was picked in the fifth round. has nothing to do with how good the scouts are they draft based on the nhl central scouting rankings

Datsyuk wasn't a lucky draft. Wings scouting team were eye balling him for awhile, and actually saw him while they went to scout for other players. They knew nobody wanted Datsyuk

He played on such an obscure Russian team scouts RARELY got there. I've got a documentary on it. Datsyuk is the biggest gem every found in any draft. Considering he's probably the most complete player on both ends of the ice of all times.

Roy was a goalie. Goalies NEVER went early. Everybody knew Roy's brillance.

he's also in a lot of charity event. Every summer he hold's a hockey tournament for his Foundation for poor children in Russia.

He and his wife are doing a lot for childrens in Montreal too, he has a lounge at the Bell Centre which is called Kovy's Corner, and at every game theres sick kids from Ste-Justine children's hospital,who have the chance to watch the game, get gifts and meet him.
