Doesn't anyone get this movie and especially this scene. It's about FOOD, the love of it, the glorying of it. Not food as fuel or for showing of or scoring points it's the LOVE OF FOOD. The whole movie examines moving from average food even simple noodles and pork to the best it can be and revealing in the joy of food.
The kid is great food obsessed he doesn't care about anything else
The last scene of the baby breast feeding while the credits roll is the final hat tip.
@fizzguts You're totally right. It really surprises me seeing how many idiots interpret some crap into the movie. It is about food. Sure, it always combines the food theme with other themes - like sex, poverty, crime, killing, comedy, every day life etc - but it's always about food. If you watch this movie and the only thing that you took from it is your apetite on something delicious, then you understood the movie.
the whole time I was thinking: couldn't some of the other guys switch it up in the slightest and order a salad? or something other than beer??? they could guess at some stuff...lol I love this scene though, really shows how pretentious people can be and the boy is awesome--he gets whacked for dropping the briefcases but totally shows the old men up.
Is funny to see that the person that finally impresses everybody is the office trainee who does seem to know about French cuisine and wine whereas the older business men know nothing about and pretend not to be too hungry as they don't understand the French menu and then when one of them orders fish the others follow suit. The trainee's boss kicks him because he does not want the trainee to make loose face to his important guests.
Hahahaha. Im Japanese living in Tokyo. The movie makes me funny. But its Japanese style perticullary in dinner meeting.hahaha. But I think we should behave like a young guy.hahaha.
Can I see a mischievous glint on the waiters face at about 3:59 or am I missinterpreting here something? It seems to me that he ist amused about the assistant breaking rules and cannot fully hide it.
Actually I think it was more along the lines of the older generation only knowing Japanese, while the younger assistant, growing up in more modern world, had better schooling and could actually read French. So it was more of an unintentional, professional bitch-slap to his bosses' intelligence and education. And I just love this movie, every damn bit of it!
I think your correct. Sole and Consomme soup is generic household french cuisine in Japan. This scene is about the difference and absurdity of two generations in the same culture.
i think that is partially correct also. but i think that is also about the younger generation not conforming like the older ones do. not only is it generic french cuisince they all also wait for the boss to decide what to order and then they all order the same thing but the young guy. he asks about a certain dish and hears what he likes, so he decides for himself that was what he was going to order.
And let me say further that this movie is an homage to the one pure thing we have left, the love of good food. This is true anywhere on the planet.I fealt a deep loss when i heard Juzo Itami was dead. What drives a man to end his life when he has so much to offer? Life is less without him. At least his legacy continues on in his films.
Love the movie, love this scene.Everyone at the table ordered what the boss did except for the lowely asistant who apparently knew what he wanted. his boss went into a nervous fit for loosing face, how japanese.Conformist.

awesome. That boy showed up all those other uptight, traditional senior level bosses.
But yeah, poor kid is most likely gonna get firedafterwards for not falling in line with his seniors.

This is just great ; I TOTALLY APPRECIATE THE YOUNG MAN´S TASTE AND EDUCATION . LEFT ME LAUGHING !
HE SET A FINE EXAMPLE TO THE ELDERLY GENTLEMAN AS WELL AS SHOWING THAT THE "NEW GENERATION" CAN BE ON TOP OF BUSINESS .

I am an actor in Japan. A young man is performed by this scene of this movie.
It has already become ago for as many as 25 years. It keeps working still as an actor.
Please give the message to me when it is good.

French cuisine restaurants are actually pretty common in Japan, yet they aren't exactly affordable for just anyone, there.
that young man indeed seems to have good taste, especially compared to the elderly businessmen who seem to have the same, old thing.
