What a lovely bird!!! I love how he preens your hand. It is so nice that he's in a good home now. There are so many horror stories of unwanted and abused parrots. It's nice to see one with a happy ending and with owner who loves and cares for him. Best of luck to you and your family.
@Sarahmoluccan Thank you so much for your kind words. He is indeed a gentle bird. As you know, muluccans are listed as one of the most difficult birds to keep. Usually the males can get very aggressive, and they are often given up for that reason. Tara has been, from day one, the sweetest happiest(and noisiest!) birds I have ever had the honor to know.
@MrMaxendiesel Tara is about 47 now as far as my vet can determine. Since they can live as long as a human...he is only middle aged now! ;-)
Since we live in a colder climate, I bought a special panel heater made for bird cages, that provides gentle radiant heat downwards, to help him stay comfortable. Thanks again for stopping by.
@MrMaxendiesel Yes. He had a hard time of it, but is in a warm happy loving home now, and I love to spoil him. When we moved into out present home I even had the builder put in a special bird room for my guys. :-)
@TravellerFellow Peaches is so lucky to have such a caring owner! According to my vet, Tara has done so much damage to the follicles that he no longer even grows any feathers to pluck out of his bald areas. Poor guy. I really feel sorry for him when we get this frigid weather here in Illinois. I bought a heat panel to keep him warm and set it on top of his cage. That way it radiates down, and he can move in and out of the warm spot as he needs to. But he will be forever my little Chicken!
with Peaches, I began to put bacitrin (sp?) on those spots where she let a feather grow in then plucked it. I also lick & kiss her bald belly-chest spots. believe it or not, by showing her attention to those bald spots, she has allowed feathers grow in. especially her downy feathers. I should have someone video her now so ppl can see the difference. this Fall past marked five yrs we've had Peaches.
cut off the toe part. if your entire sock for example is 10" , measure Tara from her neck to just behind her legs. than will be the length you'll want to keep. for the wing area, remove the heel part of the sock. (you can also put holes for the leg part, but it just annoys my too. so it looks like a sweater "dress" hehe. make sure when you put it on, you have the wing part facing upward.
When you take these birds away from their natural habitats its very hard to provide them with the stimuli they need to stay happy. Plucking can also be a sign of boredom. They've gone from forest and bushlands of Australia, papua new guinea and some parts of indonesia to a house. =/
But Tara seems happy and has wonderful colours =) i would of loved to have seen him in his early days
@Au55iegirl Tara was captive bred, but I understand what you are saying. I think they KNOW what they are missing, it is in their soul. I feel sad for all of the birds who will never know the freedom they were meant to have. Even with the best of situations, it is still not the freedom they should have. He will always be my 'little chicken'. Thank you for stopping by. You have a kind heart. Bless you!
@MissPickletoes I think they know too =) u should make a trip out to aus one day and drive from melbourne to sydney. the amount of cockys you see is amazing =) i think you'd appreciate it more than alot of others.
i can see he loves you dearly. they mate for life and you're his mate.
It must be so wonderful to be able to see these lovely birds flying free. I bet not a one of them is a plucker either! Thanks for visiting my channel and for your kind words!
Oh....poor Tara. Thank you so much for your wonderful video and explanation!
So that I know more about his story and I can feel that you're a very enthusiastic lady. That's really touching me. Tara looks gentle and a bit quiet. I love them too. Send my kisses and huges to Valentine and Tara. :)
@LawrenceLugar1 I agree with you to a degree. On a scale of difficulty, cockatoos rank as #1 in ownership difficulty. They are best in the hands of very experienced bird owners, as they DO require a LOT of attention. The sad part is many are taken into homes that cannot provide the type of care they need...and they end up in rescues. Even with good care, some become pluckers for unknown reasons.
@TravellerFellow Tara is very happy and continues to sprout a few down feathers on his chest and back. He has never learned to say anything, but sings a happy one-note song when he is either excited or when asked to do so! He will always be bald, but he will always be loved.
....how tough are these birds? And not just Cockatoo's but just big birds in general....Maybe more like an African Grey. Now what I mean by "tough" is, can they handle a bunch of dogs? I have a 5 little poms, and one cat...I've always wanted an African Grey...but I am afraid that it would get hurt. None of my animals would intentionaly hurt another-but they like to wrestle around n' roughhouse-the most damage I've seen em cause each other is a scab now n then. Would a bird stand up to this?
i have a sulfur crested cockatoo, and she has started plucking and self mutilates... i often control it by putting a "sweater" on her to keep her from picking at her wounds, then remove it after 2 weeks, and to see that her wound has completely healed. but then she would start self mutilating again in a few days... i really dont know what to do anymore.. :(
My thoughts would be to have an avian vet check her out to rule out any disorders/illnesses that can cause a bird to mutilate. Sometimes it has been caused by skin problems or nutritional problems. If she checks out ok, then the sweater might be the only thing that will save her. It would do no harm to keep one on her all the time, and remove it for a bath.(my 'too's love to shower with me on a shower perch) She is lucky she has a loving owner who will not give up on her. Best wishes!
Than you so much. I know you share a love for the rescued birds....I wish there were more people able to take them on. They are not the beauties of the world, and it takes a special heart to love them.
Loved your video, u may get this 2 times sorry. I have a little goffins in our rescue that is a mutilator. iT has been a very long road with her Cockatoos, I agree with you, are never meant to be in a living room. The most surrendured bird be get are toos, from the age 5-9 it is very sad.
Love your vid. Thanks for sharing!
Check out my videos for Pearl the story of Hope to se her go from tragic to amazing!
Thank you for sharing your story. It is sad but so true. People are enchanted by the intelligence of these wonderful birds, and their beauty....yet are woefully uninformed as to the time, money and effort it takes to secure their happiness. And even then, all of that may not be enough for them...and they pluck, mutilate, and scream...
Thanks, I agree everyone wants a too, and in no way are they a good pet, no bird a pet, but they all bring smiles to my face everyday and some tears, and some blood to my arms LOL. But we are forever responsible for what we have tamed!
HE seems so happy now..I had an Orange winged Amazon and we just couldn't take him anymore. He would scream so my parents gave him up. He was a rather moody bird and liked the whisper, which was very creepy. I think his former owners were very mean to him. You have a great bird.
Thank you so much. He is very affectionate. However, like all cockatoos, he can be very LOUD. I was lucky enough to be able to build a bird room in my house, where my guys have their cages and sleep at night( by day, they are on stands upstairs). If they get TOO loud, they can go downstairs to play in their room for a bit...til my ears stop ringing! LOL
I commend you on your rescue, and I agree that cockatoos should be left in the wild. I adore Geronimo, but deep in my heart I know he would have been happier in the wild.
I have been having a plucking problem with Geronimo. The good news is that I discovered "Bitter Yuck" spray in Petco I think. It is rosemary which tastes really bitter. Geronimo's plucking has almost stopped until I forget to apply it. I know it is too late for Tara, but pass on the info to others.
Thank you! He is such a happy guy...never learned to say a word, just whistles, squawks, and more than a few screams!! Nothing makes him happier than being in my lap!
Thanks, Ron! He is such a gentle sweet old soul..He seemed so sad and forlorn...I could not bear to see him be where he was...poked at by kids, stuck in a VERY small cage...so naturally he came home with me!
Thank you! Yes, I could not leave him where he was. I knew the shop owner, and begged him to let me take Tara...and he smiled and said he was hoping I would offer( I was his go-to person for parrot advice, as he was more of a fish person than a bird person)
Tara is sitting on my knee as I type this....'tasting' my elbow...lolol.
only thing i can say truthfully is that i wept. best i can do is to always love AND porovide for our birds. peaches and albert. hpoe he stays well and prospers. ft
Thanks,FT. He is a happy guy now. He has never learned to talk, but he has a wonderful whistle...more like a "la la la laaa" that lets me know how happy he is.
at 40 y/o he needs a nice quiet retirement with loving care forever. we ahve already planned who is to take care of the cockatoos when we pass. the most trustworthy nieces who find every excuse they can to come over and "help out". we are blessed. the birds are too. AS is your bird. i'm jsut happy that he isn't lonely any more and will live good for the rest of his life, (which may be 60 or even 90 years!) God BLess and take care. I will look for new videos! FT
Thank you! He has such a sweet soul......I could not think of him shivering in that pet shop. I bought a heat panel designed for bird cages, and he can move out from under it when he gets too warm. So to him, bald is indeed beautiful!! Molluccans are supposed to be the most difficult of birds to keep as far as mature males go....but he is a total kissy face lover!! (as well as the LOUDEST!!)
Aww God love him! He is absolutely and totaly ADORABLE!!! Have you heard of the puppy heat pads? The are a metal pad with cover, stay cool till puppy gets on them, then warm up slightly with weight of pup. You can get them with metal covered electrical leads for safety. (ebay) I got one for my 76 y/o amazon Cinders, she ADORED it! he could warm his man-boobs up nicely on one of those, lol! Oooh, I want to kiss him!!!!
He is beautiful! With the feathers gone, it is easy to see what an amazing thing a bird is...how they are 'put together', and it still is a wonder how something so fragile looking can defy gravity and fly!
Thank you! He is still a beauty in my eyes. Molluccan cockatoos have the reputation of being the HARDEST of the parrots/cockatoos to have as a pet, due to their size and, in the males..agressive tendencies. Sweet Tara is as gentle as a lamb.
