Most do not know that this film was banned in China and the government said it was scandalous. They banned Gong Li and the director from working together for several years. In State-sanctioned biographies, it is said the director and Gong Li were involved in a scandal. They do not say that the 'scandal' was to make a great movie which told the truth.
