First of all, the peace prize is a joke in itself.

However, if you actually read the criteria which Alfred Nobel left for the judges to award the Prize based on, Obama does fit the profile (although arguably not moreso in 12 days than other nominees had in a full year of work).

Either way, the Prize going to Obama is nothing near as bad as previous recipients such as Al Gore or the worst of the worst: Henry Kissinger.

Nobel's criteria was: "...shall have done the most or the best work for fraternity between nations, for the abolition or reduction of standing armies and for the holding and promotion of peace congresses."

Obama does promote disarmament and international fraternity, I'm not trying to say he earned this prize in 12 days, but the Peace Prize is always awarded to ridiculous and underserving people and Obama's awarding is far from the worst.

What people tend to forget is that peace is not just about stopping fights, but also diminishing the likelihood of fights erupting in the first place. In this light, Obama has done well to overturn some Bush's foreign policy and seek to work more closely with Muslims, respect UN, and also, his nuclear disarmament drive is pretty commendable as a long lasting measure towards a more peaceful future.
