It's a Sassanian Flag used as a national flag in a time when Iran was NOT Islamic and a completely different society altogether.

The Derafsh is NOT a Sasani Flag! It's very much older than the Sasani period. It was used throughout the history by Iranian Dynasties including the Sasanis.

By the way it was after the defeat of the Persian Empire (Sasani period) which the Arab invaders of Iran took this Derafsh which was decorated with precious jewelry and gold. The arabs removed the precious stones and gold from it and cut it to pieces!
