Come on.....let's be honest. Only a fraction of Marc's musical output can be considered good. Most of it was embarrassingly twee - especially his early stuff. When he puts on that quivery voice, he sounds like a baby goat - or Stevie Nicks on helium.
I was in love once. She used to call me Peregrin Took, I used to call her Unicorn. We split. As a reminder of good all days, I kept "My people were fair...", "Prophets, seers..." and "A beard of..." She kept "Unicorn". I miss her! You see, I met this beautiful unicorn, by the light of a magical moon...
@MsStepharoni i bet youre just some hipster kid who clicked on this cuz u thought it would be your interpretation of 'cool' bc of the word unicorn. so fuck off if you dont like it.
So sorry for you that you cannot have appreciation for such pure poetic music. Marc Bolan is and always will be awesome. His earlier music is one in the best!
So sorry for you that you cannot have appreciation for such pure poetic music. Marc Bolan is and always will be awesome. His earlier music is one in the best!
Glorious. I loved Bolan's later glitter-rock phase, but nothing beats the sounds on those first albums. You can live in these songs. What a prodigious talent! And so missed.
TheMikesMaiden that's funny. Mickey looks so different because it's Steve Peregrine-Took. Marc split with SP-T before hooking up with Mickey Finn and changing their name to T.Rex. At the time, my best friend's sister-in-law was going out with SP-T and she still has the original album given to her by SP-T. Memories!!
wow, unicorn What an album. I am from that time, and am enjoying time travelling on this site. Must go, just noticed ' Frowning Atahuallpa ' [ my Inca love ] who else would even come close to a title like that, let alone such a wonderful song !
I love those first 3 of mark's lps, I play them all the time well not all the time, just a lot of it, and my university hall mates think I'm strange for it :p
think my favourite tracks of his are childstar and stacey grove and this one...
marc was so in the now,he even knew when he was going to die bless him,i love this song ,made in the year i was born,i wish i could go back in time and save him,i love marc always
I like the way he 'mumbled' the words, I watch with subtitles now so some phrases seem quite twee now but for its time I think Marcs delivery was spot on, he always said it wasnt the meaning of the word it was how it sounded in the phrase that mattered. true genius. true musician.
love marc and tyrannosaurus rex but do wish his diction was a little clearer on these songs. he was an incredible songwriter with a genius ear for melody, but whenever i hear this early stuff i just wish the words were audible throughout. to me, it wouldve made them even better as he wrote some wonderful weird lyrics
i had the original prophets sears and sages angels of the ages..with the lyric sheet and everything...and i put it in the bin when i bought my first cd player...what a mug
threw all them away..t rex ride a white swan album the purple covered 1, it had the a side printed on both sides tho the songs were correct on both sides...regards
Thanks for uploading :) And compliments for the video !
Unicorn really is my favorite from the "Bolan" albums. Chariots of Silk, Cat Black, Iscariot, Romany Soup and the title track are all so powerful and greatly written !
About D. Banhart, don't forget about the whole folk movement : Neil Young, Nick Drake, Dylan, Cohen, Donovan, Creedance + stuff like Love, late Beatles and 66-68's psychedelia are probably all worth mentionning as influences.
I first heard this at the age of 12 when my sister's hippy boyfriend brought the album to our house, it's been with me ever since. I think this would be my 'soylent green' music......colour blue btw.
marc was a mystical man his songs are poetry to music ;she was born to be my unicorn, robed head of ferns, cat child, tutored by the learned, darkly ghostish host, haggard vizier of the moats, seeks the sandled shores of gods baby of the moors, the night mares mauve mashed mind, sights the visions of the blinds, shoreside stream of steam, cooking kings in cream of scream, jack door winter head, cleans his chalcedony bed, a silken word of kind, was returned from nijinsky hind,I COULD GO BUT NO ROOM ,BOBBY XX
"Take care of the sounds, and the sense will take care of itself." This has been at the back of my wardrobe since 1970. Don't find it very often these days, but it would be considerably less of a wardrobe without it.
I don't understand a single word, in fact never did. But among the early stuff this is the most beautiful track he ever recorded. Lofty Skies comes close.
devendra said that after one of his early shows someone asked him about tyrannosaurus rex. he thought they meant t. rex and was given a tape. he said that he was glad that he never heard of them before he started making music because they sounded so alike.
@jubilaz That's interesting. Good on him. Perhaps Devendra was tapping into an unconscious collective? ;) Thanks for the info. --honeysprite (I'm on my other account)
that's definitely a possibility. that stuff does happen. i notice it in some of my songs. i write a song with a certain lyric or melody and then end up hearing it later in another song. you can find the interview on young gods website. they've got a whole collection of articles and interviews on all their artists. interesting stuff.
Bolan was a lot more talented than people gave him credit for. All of the Tyrannosaurus
Rex songs are directly inspired by Tolkien's 'Lord of the Rings', and C.S. Lewis's 'Narnian Chronicles' (e.g. 'The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe').
I think these songs reach into the heart and mood of the latter two authors and bring to life the kind of literary ambience they were trying to express. I'm amazed Bolan's songs were never used in any of the film versions of these novels.
I first heard this as a lad when my sisters hippy boyfriend brought the album (unicorn)over our house, I was mesmerised, the start of a life long love.
