  • Come on.....let's be honest. Only a fraction of Marc's musical output can be considered good. Most of it was embarrassingly twee - especially his early stuff. When he puts on that quivery voice, he sounds like a baby goat - or Stevie Nicks on helium.

  • Devendra Banhart, welcome to your career!

  • I was in love once. She used to call me Peregrin Took, I used to call her Unicorn. We split. As a reminder of good all days, I kept "My people were fair...", "Prophets, seers..." and "A beard of..." She kept "Unicorn". I miss her! You see, I met this beautiful unicorn, by the light of a magical moon...

  • the origins of glam music

  • So Psychedelic......Lovely stuff.......

  • aaahh it's been a long time since I saw this....sounds even better than ever !

  • The King of Creepy LSD music!

  • I love this trance like early music of Marc's. I too could live in this song.

This is a reason to stay alive, just to listen to. Thank you dear honeysprite.

  • ANOTHER ONE FOR ME OLD MATE MIKE, GIVE HIM A WHISKEY PLAY THIS, AND HE'S AWAY. A GREAT SOUND . BUT THERE AGAIN IT'S BOLAN......XXXX

  • @MsStepharoni i bet youre just some hipster kid who clicked on this cuz u thought it would be your interpretation of 'cool' bc of the word unicorn. so fuck off if you dont like it.

  • @MsStepharoni

So sorry for you that you cannot have appreciation for such pure poetic music. Marc Bolan is and always will be awesome. His earlier music is one in the best!

  • @MsStepharoni Sorry that you don't get Marc Bolan. But it's some of the best music ever made.

  • Majestic! Marc, pure as an icy stare on a summer evening.

  • Very beautiful visual treatment to very beautiful music. Thank you :)

  • Absolutely outstanding, brings back so many memories, thank you for posting and please don't ever remove it!

  • Devendra completely ripped off Bolans sound

  • I have a Born to be my Unicorn shirt...

    Yesh.

  • Glorious. I loved Bolan's later glitter-rock phase, but nothing beats the sounds on those first albums. You can live in these songs. What a prodigious talent! And so missed.

  • TheMikesMaiden that's funny. Mickey looks so different because it's Steve Peregrine-Took. Marc split with SP-T before hooking up with Mickey Finn and changing their name to T.Rex. At the time, my best friend's sister-in-law was going out with SP-T and she still has the original album given to her by SP-T. Memories!!

  • Marc and Steve Took = Total Madness. Brilliant~

  • This song has a quality of strong inner warmth and sanity. I just love love love it.

  • wow, unicorn What an album. I am from that time, and am enjoying time travelling on this site. Must go, just noticed ' Frowning Atahuallpa ' [ my Inca love ] who else would even come close to a title like that, let alone such a wonderful song !

  • I love those first 3 of mark's lps, I play them all the time well not all the time, just a lot of it, and my university hall mates think I'm strange for it :p

think my favourite tracks of his are childstar and stacey grove and this one...

  • @djoutrage18

keep playin' em - your mates will come 'round.

  • wow love it,Mickey looks so diff in that pic

  • @TheMikesMaiden thats cos its Steve Took :)

  • Just lovely

  • great video.......really great effects.....

  • Truly Magickal !

  • JUST GREAT

    JAMES

    XXX

  • Here I am again......back to my favourite, I'll be singing this all day tomorrow :) love it love it love it love you Marc

  • one of my favs se this live years ago.....great days

  • marc was so in the now,he even knew when he was going to die bless him,i love this song ,made in the year i was born,i wish i could go back in time and save him,i love marc always

  • @ScrittiSparkle saw him do this live at london he was so good live a memory for ever

  • so beautiful....

  • Sing marc sing it is keeping us together…

  • I like the way he 'mumbled' the words, I watch with subtitles now so some phrases seem quite twee now but for its time I think Marcs delivery was spot on, he always said it wasnt the meaning of the word it was how it sounded in the phrase that mattered. true genius. true musician.

  • well puy x

  • love marc and tyrannosaurus rex but do wish his diction was a little clearer on these songs. he was an incredible songwriter with a genius ear for melody, but whenever i hear this early stuff i just wish the words were audible throughout. to me, it wouldve made them even better as he wrote some wonderful weird lyrics

  • Unicorn really is a beautful album.

  • @jamesbrown69 ISNT HE JUST THE BEST

  • @jamesbrown69

    Totally agree...

  • hab die originallp in berlin 1977 ergattert heute unbezahlbar

  • Definitely infinite and beyond the universe.

    fantastico..

  • maybe it is silly waht i poest but my Father wanted to name me "Marc' ...

  • That was pretty boss =D

    Thanks for putting that up!

  • what are they even saying??

  • i had the original prophets sears and sages angels of the ages..with the lyric sheet and everything...and i put it in the bin when i bought my first cd player...what a mug

  • Was it the only one you threw away ,

    and when ?

Oh whell...don't want to remind you

    about that stupid ditty ☻

Still got my vinyl from '63 on,

almost never play them anymore though.

  • threw all them away..t rex ride a white swan album the purple covered 1, it had the a side printed on both sides tho the songs were correct on both sides...regards

  • Thanks for uploading :) And compliments for the video !

Unicorn really is my favorite from the "Bolan" albums. Chariots of Silk, Cat Black, Iscariot, Romany Soup and the title track are all so powerful and greatly written !

About D. Banhart, don't forget about the whole folk movement : Neil Young, Nick Drake, Dylan, Cohen, Donovan, Creedance + stuff like Love, late Beatles and 66-68's psychedelia are probably all worth mentionning as influences.

  • love it

  • haha about the devendra nonsense.

i actually don't care for him but this is one of my favorite t rex songs

  • 'Unicorn' (the whole album) is 'cream of the crop' imagery!!!

  • I wouldn't say Banhart has copied this song so much as adapted the musical type

He clearly liked the genre and joined it because of this song's qualities

  • wow....Devendra Banhart has made an entire career from copying this one song!!!

  • agreed

  • lovely..chases the blues away and my nasty cold xx

  • hemp hemp hemp

  • acid, acid, acid

  • I first heard this at the age of 12 when my sister's hippy boyfriend brought the album to our house, it's been with me ever since. I think this would be my 'soylent green' music......colour blue btw.

  • Thanks for classic Bolan... RIP Marc

  • marc was a mystical man his songs are poetry to music ;she was born to be my unicorn, robed head of ferns, cat child, tutored by the learned, darkly ghostish host, haggard vizier of the moats, seeks the sandled shores of gods baby of the moors, the night mares mauve mashed mind, sights the visions of the blinds, shoreside stream of steam, cooking kings in cream of scream, jack door winter head, cleans his chalcedony bed, a silken word of kind, was returned from nijinsky hind,I COULD GO BUT NO ROOM ,BOBBY XX

  • "Take care of the sounds, and the sense will take care of itself." This has been at the back of my wardrobe since 1970. Don't find it very often these days, but it would be considerably less of a wardrobe without it.

  • I can imagine stepping through the back of my

wardrobe and this is playing....it's wonderful

  • Thanks Honeysprite. This brings back memories.

  • Magical..

  • I don't understand a single word, in fact never did. But among the early stuff this is the most beautiful track he ever recorded. Lofty Skies comes close.

  • Amazingly beautiful tune from the great Marc. He could pull you into his magical world in a second. Thank you for posting this.

  • Thank you honeysprite - for this and the other gems you have posted. RIP Marc

  • mystical beauty from the master..

  • One classic and beautiful track - always loved it.

  • i just love this song it's so magical..

  • @saracrazychild The whole 'Unicorn' album is magical to me, one of the best from that era. Certainly my favorite of theirs.

  • I've got Marc's poetry book..The Warlock Of love..I was amazed to see it being sold on Amazon for nearly £350 !

  • Wow.. tomorrow is the 16th...

  • it's not...it's the 2nd.

  • it's not . . . it's the 9th

  • doy doy doy doy at the end, so trippy! I love it.

  • magic song , magic Bolan, I miss you, Marc....

  • So pure....

  • classic honeysprite,thanx

  • fantastic video. Great song.

  • i always come back to this song...especially when i should be working instead of ogling Marc on youtube

  • this just takes me somewhere else, such a beautiful song pure Bolan magic..

  • This is what I love about Bolan.

  • Great, great, great!!! I love this psycho-acoustic Marc Bolan :)

It reminds me a lot of the first Devendra Banhart records...

  • I believe that's what Devendra was going for. ;)

  • peace

  • @honeysprite

devendra said that after one of his early shows someone asked him about tyrannosaurus rex. he thought they meant t. rex and was given a tape. he said that he was glad that he never heard of them before he started making music because they sounded so alike.

  • @jubilaz That's interesting. Good on him. Perhaps Devendra was tapping into an unconscious collective? ;) Thanks for the info. --honeysprite (I'm on my other account)

  • @spandexannie

that's definitely a possibility. that stuff does happen. i notice it in some of my songs. i write a song with a certain lyric or melody and then end up hearing it later in another song. you can find the interview on young gods website. they've got a whole collection of articles and interviews on all their artists. interesting stuff.

  • could this be the most beautiful Bolan song ever....?

  • wow, i can hear where the animal collective got their influence

  • Bolan was a lot more talented than people gave him credit for. All of the Tyrannosaurus

Rex songs are directly inspired by Tolkien's 'Lord of the Rings', and C.S. Lewis's 'Narnian Chronicles' (e.g. 'The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe').

I think these songs reach into the heart and mood of the latter two authors and bring to life the kind of literary ambience they were trying to express. I'm amazed Bolan's songs were never used in any of the film versions of these novels.

  • FABULOUS X

  • I first heard this as a lad when my sisters hippy boyfriend brought the album (unicorn)over our house, I was mesmerised, the start of a life long love.

  • It sounds kind of like Donovan

  • Brilliant video for this song. I don't remember hearing it before, but the mood reaches back to times unrecorded. Your video appears to echo a quest, and matches beautfully with the mysticism of this song.

  • Thank you. :)

  • where did you get this song?

  • This is off the Unicorn Album released 1969,i got a vinyl copy i think EMI label back in about 1970/1 it was deleted but i managed to obtain the copy.

  • cool

  • I got the 'Unicorn' album about 1970, the album was deleted when i managed to get a copy this was a track from it

  • you've outdone yourself. I have not heard that song for years. Am i the only one who believes that marc's work was so much better before had added the shrieking woman backround singers? Keep up the good work.

  • Hi Meridith. Not seen any of your comments until recently and then all of a sudden wow. I agree about the background "singers" lol. Keep in touch. Gx

  • yes i agree.

  • Merideth said, "you've outdone yourself. I have not heard that song for years. Am i the only one who believes that marc's work was so much better before had added the shrieking woman backround singers? Keep up the good work." Think if it would have been around at that time to ruin this song.

  • great vid to a great song, RIP marc, xxLizxx

  • I love it that so many of you love this as much as me. If you are ever near the Kansas please let me know. As for Bolan, so, many songs and so little time.

  • poetry doesnt gey any better than this...

    The night-mare's mauve mashed mind

Sights the visions of the blinds

    Shoreside stream of steam

Cooking kings in cream of scream

  • what a great song and video it just sums up our great the master was xx

  • I wonder if you get tired of hearing me say I love what you do! If we're quoting lines... then I'm grooving on "Robed head of ferns, Cat child tutored by the learned". ;) Have a great one.

  • This track is an old friend of mine, from a great album:)

  • i just love the prgramme u use. Great video and in my mind one of the top 3 Tyran Rex songs

    Eddy x

  • Fab it impressed me at 15 and it still moves even today

  • Great video.....i wonder what you could do with ' Once upon the Seas of Abyssinia'?.......respect

  • Nice one, honeysprite, try Beard of Stars. kev
