@richpin06a yes i did what u did in ur video before, then sometime after that i used this seafoam stuff(spray version) which cleans out everything causing lots of white smoke to shoot out the tail pipe HOWEVER IT IDLES SMOOTH AFTER DOIN SO, when b 4 the wheel used to vibrate. now u can hardly tell the car is on, but mabee i need to clean more?
@richpin06a Is sometimes when the car is warm and i come to a light/stop sign. It feels like the car don't want to stop( when braking the rpm goes like 3 notches above 1 then quickly comes down to 0. any ideas of what this is? i replaced the tps, and pcv valve, and theres no hissin sound coming from the vac hses. 0_o? other than that everything else seems normal.
My gas pedal gets stuck sumtines when I press n it makes a pop noise and goes bak to normal its dangerous I knw but my question is that is this wut I gutta do to it to fix my problem??? Please answer help!!
@richpin06a im not 100% iv never done it before, i need to change my throttle body and in the manual it says once throttle body is off grab the sealing ring and replace it... i cant seem to find the ring on ebay so though whats the worse that happen if i just reuse the one thats already on.
Happy Thanksgiving Rich !!! Would you please give me your recommendation for an air compressor. I feel like I only need one to keep my tires inflated and to clean and dry engine parts like you show in your videos. I`m not sure how much PSI or how many gallons of air tank I should have.
@MrRaiders6769 Going to eat turkey soon.My recommendation would be the Speedaire 1NNF6 which is very close to the one i have which is a 30 year old Speedaire 3Z355A which has never let me down over the years.
i have a satern sl1 sohc ...cranks but no start ..put a new fuel pump fuel filter and new injector... fuses are fine ...fuel pressure is fine...but the injector doesn't purge at all.... would it be any kind of senor ..the wiring looks fine
@richpin06a yes when i put gas in the throttle body it fires up i put a new fuel pump, its a TBI, so i put one new injector in but there is no power going to the injector....does another sensor control the fuel injectors pulsation? or im gussing it would be the computer
@lilridda21 The voltage at the injector on the pink/black wire comes from the 10 amp INJ fuse in the underhood fuse panel. That wire is live when the key is in the run position.
@richpin06 well i used a test light on the injector connector and i did see anything...i checked the fuse and its not blown....is there any sensor that controls the injector like the TPS or something to that effect or would it just be the computer?
@lilridda21 The computer uses the crank and throttle position sensors for injector control. You crank sensor is fine because you have spark. The light blue wire at the injector is the ground wire for the injector which is controlled by the computer.Your problem is there is no voltage to the injector which is not controlled by the computer.
@richpin06a YES after watching your video i changed the CTMS, and mentioned above. BUT i think i need a new TPS. corect me if im wrong but when i accelerate the throttle is a bit heavy(it pulls a bit before taking off), then when i let up off the throttle i fell it shift down. i dont know if im explaning it right to get a accurate explanation. however i cleaned the TPS connector with the elec cleaner. WHAT U THINK 0_o?
@richpun06a i cleaned the throttle body changed plugs+wires, but it seems my car goes through gas like water lol. is there something else i can do to improve gas mileage? my new air filter shouyld be here today so imma change that as soon as it arrives.
Hey Rich, Quick question please. I am looking to purchase one of those auto trouble code scanners for my `98 Saturn sl2 and my wife's 2007 Toyota Yaris. I see scanners for 30 bucks up to 250. Any suggestions how much I should spend just for my own home and family personal use ? Thank you
i just did a quick clean on my nissan sentra. I'm not the biggest engine head but on a 2001 nissan sentra getting the throttle body off just seems to be such a pain
OK, Now when I left for work this morning it was running awesome again. When I left work it ran great also. Maybe I`m just clearing out old gas. Thanks Richpin
Hey Rich, That was another awesome vid. My 98 sl2 ran pretty awesome for about 50 miles city driving then the same hesitation and bogging starts again from a cold or hot start. Does it more when my AC is running. The temperature sensor was changed about a year and a half ago but I`m pretty sure my mechanic switched it out with a used temperature sensor from the junk yard. should I now use your world famous EGR check video or go after the fuel filter ? Thanks, Jon
Whats the grey part called that the throttle body was taken off of... i saw that i had a lot of carbon in there...can it be cleaned out or taken off...by me at home?
Rich, you totally rock. I did both the throttle body on my 2002 SC2 and EGR today from your vids. I'm embarrassed to say that I too found a mess of black goo that "would make a girl scream" (but I didn't). Just got it done in short order, and my SC2 seemed to have much better power on the test drive. Your vids are much appreciated, my friend.
I did this job today on my car today. The amount of carbon behind the throttle valve was enough to make a girl scream. I had to scrape most of it out with a screwdriver blade before attempting the throttle body cleaner. Al Gore would have been proud to see the carbon sequestration job I had done. Anyway it's all sparkling now but why is there carbon on the intake side of the car anyway? Is it because of the EGR? And what about the intake manifold? It didn't look great either.
@samuelbrainsample There is so much junk in the manifold because the PCV and EGR are dumping all there gases in there. The outside air ends up cleaner but not your manifold.
I did this Job today as the Idle would stumble on sitting at a light, take it up to about 1100rpm and it goes away. The back of the butterfly was so gunked up- It looked as it had fur, cleaner and the brush and scrub, occasionally i got to see bright shiny metal under the scrubbed area and the thing looks almost brand new...waiting on a gasket and it goes back on all clean- Richpin has saved me many hundreds if not thousands of dollars worth of repair that is simple if it explained right.
hi rich,i recently did the cleaning on my 97,it sound like it was stuff(iddles slow, and dies when u step on gas) i clean it also put a new air control sensor, now what it does is iddles a lil high around 1000 1200,but it only does it when it starts or when i stop at a sign,i replece vacuum hoses,it doesnt look like it has a leak, the only funny thing about the new sensor i put in doesnt look the same(u cant see the spring there is a plastic that goes over it,u think thats why idles high?

@richpin06a once again u came through man. i was goin to attempt this yesterday but like the other guy said i've heard ppl saying they had problems after cleaning the throttle body, but after seeing ur video and reading the reviews here i think imma do it. jus 1 question some videos they clean it without disassemblyu. is it safe or will dirt go inside the engine if broking up while still attached(BAD THING)?
Thanks so much This shows me how to not only clean the throttle body but also how to get to the idle air control valve. now I can finally do this! lol. Thank you man keep them coming! God Bless You! I commented on other vid about this but figured I should post on this vid aswell since its actually to do with what I am talking about lol.
Hey richpin, love the videos. Question for you. Some people are cleaning there throttle body's and reporting major malfunctions afterward. What are these people most likely doing wrong? If I clean my throttle body exactly as shown here should I be alright?
What is the name of the plug and attached plastic hoses that came off after the throttle cable was removed at 0:35? While removing the sensor, the small hose cracked and needs to be replaced.
For those of you suffering from the 1998 S series either idling too fast or stalling cause it runs too slowly. I used this great video to at first try cleaning as shown here. But the solution for my problem was replacing the Idle Air Control Valve. Having already followed this video for disassembly/reassembly really helped. it sputtered and moaned on reassembly but eventually ran and hasn't had that problem since then.

Just did this...took just under an hour or so...my IAC valve was pretty coated...throttle body wasn't too bad but they both needed a cleaning...heres to hoping my idle gets a bit better! Thanks Richpin!
My Saturn was high idling. I accessed the throttle body (car was off but a little warm) and sprayed in a CRC throttle body & air intake cleaner product. I Manually turned the throttle and shot in short bursts of the cleaning spray. I carefully wiped using a shop towel. I allowed about 25 to 30 minutes to dry before I reassembled the air ductwork. I started the car ( it struggled momentarily) and proceeded to get a full tank of gas. I then poured in a Sea Foam motor treatment product. Voila!
I just sprayed carb/choke cleaner into throttle body whilel running it....Later my car won't start..Why is this? Is there a such thing as using to much? I read using to much carb/choke cleaner will cause flooding and foul spark plugs. Can I use started fluid to get it started? Any advice?
I just cleaned the throttle body on my Saturn SL {the gas pedel was sticking} however the intake manafold was just as bad should I take that off and clean it too? and it as simple as the throttle body or more diffucult
Oh Richpin!!! Thank you so much for all these videos. I've been able to bring my Saturn back from the edge. But I've got a quick question. After cleaning the throttle body. The computer code says it idling too high. I turned the adjust screw and I still get the same code. Is there something else I should do? I was getting the code before the clean and I thought the cleaning would fix it. It wants to float at high rpms then comes down. ???
@mdfrancis There is no idle adjuster there is a throttle plat stop screww but you do not want to touch that.Sounds like it is a TPS or IAC problem. What are you getting for a code.Dame youtube comment box is screwed up.
@richpin06a I was thinking that. Is there a way I can check that? The I forget the code number but it's idle too high. At least that is what pep boys is telling me.
If you got a new idle air control valve you need to take the battery cables off take the part off and put your new part in and hook the battery back up.
Then you need to drive it on a highway or somewhere with a constant speed of no less then 45 mph and after a few min. your computer should reset the idle to the proper settings. If you don't have a new one I guess this won't hurt to try anyway.
Do you happen know what that hose is called at the top of the throttle body (you remove it around 0:34)? I have a '99 SL2 and broke the hose (brittle due to cold weather) where it crosses over the valve cover; now I need to replace it.
I've taken my throttle body off to clean. It was very dirty (on the inside). I looked inside the intake manifold and it is filthy. Sludge build up on the inside is impressive (in a bad way).
Any recommendations on cleaning this?
Should I remove the Intake manifold to clean it?
I looked but didn't find any videos of anyone doing this.
@GorgeGeorg I was wondering if you got a response or found out about your question I did the same thing and was wondering if I should take off the intake manifold its pretty nasty
@Vatgirl I received no reply (although I notice you did).
Anyway, I decided not to take off the intake manifold to clean it at this time. At some point in the future, I would like to just to see what difference it would make to the operation of my car. Hopefully, curiosity won't kill my SC2 when I do this. It does look like quite the job though - it would be great if there was a video showing the removal of the intake manifold.
Is the IAC pin/ plunger supposed to be easily moved, when OFF the car? Mine didn't move at all. But cleaning it up obviously improved my situation, though, so it must be moving while ON the car.
I want to change or clean my throttle body on my 2000 saturn sl2 is it assembled the same and does the same rules apply to cleaning it? HOw do you know when your throttle body needs changing adverse cleaning?
Great Updated Video! Much shorter. Tip not said. Lower bolt @TB needs a Deep Socket if your Sat has bracket going to EGR Valve. I learned this the hard way. Richpin Rocks!
Sometimes, especially in the winter when i press the clutch my rpms go up then drop. Lately when i press the clutch the rpm's go up and stay up. Should i try cleaning the throttle body or is it just the wire sticking?
estos videos son fantasticos, yo tengo un saturn 1995 y hace 1 semana la puse motor de 1999 me sirven mucho tus videos para aprender a darles servicio a mi carro

@mdfrancis

EVAP purge solenoid line. You can repair it with the right size rubber hose.

Vatgirl 1 year ago

Bravo. I'm looking to get one of these soon. Anymore of these DIY type videos for these cars?
Also are there any hickup/finnicky parts that are on these cars that I should be aware of before I buy.
Much thanks in advance.

Erratic idle is probably the biggest problem.
